A fine stay in the country

  • 4 of 5

We stayed in this house for two days as part of our trip to see the eclipse. With the all the traveling we did not get to spend much time in the house other than eating and sleeping. For the short period of time we were there everything was good and all that we needed was there.

We were a little nervous about the large security deposit but it was all returned a week or so after we checked out. Overall a fine place to stay and the owner and caretaker we nice to deal with.

AC did not work and I was charged an extra money with no explaination why after our stay

  • 2 of 5

Nights were miserable sleeping as the ac did not cool the house. The upstairs windows all say not to open them so that made the hot nights even worse. Thr place has two bathrooms but only one has a shower. I was never visited by anyone either even though they said I would be. The house smelled moldy when we first arrived. All of the dishes in the house are old and chipped. There is no wifi and cell coverage is terrible. The town has little to offer for shopping or food options unless you like covenience store pizza. I was charged an extra cleaning fee based on false claims with no explaination as to why or what extra cleaning was done. There are a bunch of instructions for clean up before you go or they will charge a ridiculous amount for a cleaning fee all of which we did. Overall I wish we had rented a hotel. I thought it would be fun to stay at this place but all the cleaning and the terrible ac ruined it for us.

Great weekend getaway

  • 5 of 5

Our family really enjoyed our three night stay at the farm. It was very comfortable and suited our needs well. We met the caretakers of the property and were impressed with their friendliness and hospitality. The only concern we had was that cell phone and internet service was not available. We have AT&T as our provider. Actually we could not get AT&T service anywhere near Farmington, IA so were stuck with being unable to communicate via phone or online. The home was great otherwise.

A trip back in time

  • 4 of 5

A trip to grandmas house (without grandma or fresh cookies). Wake up to sunlight streaming across the hay field and old barn. The resident bullfrog calls out a greeting each trip near the fire pit. A mother deer and her fawn caught in the headlights when returning late from a historical sightseeing trip. Great place to catch up with family and friends without distractions of a big city (no wifi - parents happy, teenagers mad). The locals were very nice. It's a small town so plan your shopping accordingly. A great place to just relax and enjoy quiet. The bikes were a hit. It's an older farmhouse and as long as you are willing to clean up after yourself a great place to stay. It's intended to be a step back in time. There is only one shower. My wife is sensitive to smells so we used some febreeze the first day but otherwise a great stay. Sleeps 8 comfortably. You will pay more for any extras. I would definitely stay again if in the area.

Nice farm house

  • 4 of 5

We had a good time! The house is nice. Everything we needed was there. The house was hot when we arrived. It took the A/C a day to cool the place off.

Fotsch Farm shares the boundary of the Farmington, Iowa, city limits. It is only a mile or so away from beautiful Shimek State Forest comprising more than 9,000 acres of natural forest interwoven with trails for hiking, biking and horseback riding together with numerous ponds waiting for someone to throw in a hook to catch the numerous sunfish, blue gills and crappies making their home there. Farmington is one of 4 historic 'Villages of Van Buren County' that are nestled in the lovely DesMoines River Valley a short distance upstream from the confluence of the DesMoines and Mississippi Rivers. Many a catfish dinner have been supplied by catches on the DesMoines. A short distance across the river from Farmington is the large Indian Lake Park, a great place to picnic as well as to fish. Horse lovers will love to rent a horse nearby or bring their own horse to stable at a large horse facility just south of town. Hunters enjoy the long deer season (Shimek forest is open for hunting) as well as other hunting for other game including turkeys, ducks, and smaller critters. Others can't wait for spring and mushroom hunting, many of which are found on Fotsch Farm.

Summer brings many festivals put on by the villages. One of the most popular is the Strawberry Festival located in Farmington itself with all you can eat strawberry sundaes and a huge array of tents where arts and crafts of all sorts are available for purchase. Bicycles are available at Fotsch Farm for guests to use in exploring the area.
