Unwind In Unspoilt French Countryside In This Spacious Restored Farmhouse.

La Tavellerie is a large 19th century stone farmhouse set in the rolling hills of the Vendee Bocage in Western France. It has 5 large bedrooms and 4 bathrooms and comfortably sleeps 10. The house sits in 3 hectares of land which includes an orchard, gardens, a small wood and lots of grassland. It is beautiful and peaceful year-round, and is a lovely place to spend time with friends and family. In the colder months enjoy blazing log fires in the living room and crisp country walks. In summer, laze by the 12m pool, eat outdoors under the large trees in the heat of the day, and on the beautiful south facing stone terrace in the evening. The night sky is wonderful here, and we have a good amateur telescope which you are welcome to use. At all times of the year kids love to make camps in the small wood. There is an excellent butcher and boulanger in La Caillere, and local restaurants we heartily recommend. This is the perfect place to get away from it all, spend quality time together, and allow the beautiful French countryside, food, drink and culture to melt away all your cares.

About Clarissa

Hi, my name is Clarissa - I am English and grew up in London. My Dad is a doctor and my mother was a painter and potter and I have 2 brothers. I married Patrick - a Californian - whom I met studying Political Philosophy at LSE 26 years ago. We now have 7 wonderful kids ranging in age from 24 to 6. La Tavellerie is our holiday home - a great contrast to London where we live and work and a place we go every school holiday to unwind. It is a superb place to take kids as there is so much space where they can run and safely play - even a small wood that family tradition has it that grown-ups are not allowed to enter. This leaves us free to read, and for me to garden which has become my new passion as you will see! We love to cook with the fabulous French produce, and spend ages over long meals on the terrace or under the trees. Food here is really great - especially the seafood which the Vendee region is known for - and we have a superb local hyper market. We have a 12 meter salt water swimming pool with a 1.5m high fence around and a lockable gate for peace of mind when holidaying with kids who are non-swimmers. We also have outdoor games such as badminton - boules for the 'French experience' and for baseball fans like my husband Patrick some gloves and balls. We have an outdoor ping pong table and you can hire bikes to explore the countryside, and for those who like to walk there are lovely marked walks through the local woods.

I inherited this property from my parents. We have had holiday homes in this area for 36 years. When La Tavellerie came up for sale my parents snapped it up and then they improved it as my mother was a good artist and had a real talent for making beautiful spaces. One of the reasons we have stayed in the Vendee is because as well as being a beautiful area and relatively untouched by tourism, the people are wonderfully warm and friendly.

superb traditionnal french house with great comfort.

We spent five days in this wonderful house. We were 6 adults with 6 young childtren. The house has kept its traditionnal beauty and charm but it is very comfortable even in cold winter. The surroundings are very nice and you can visit several places full of interest.

La Tavellerie is in the Vendee Bocage which is a hilly, wooded area of Western France retaining the charm of the traditional French countryside. The climate is reputedly the second best in France after the South of France. The summers are hot but not stiflingly so, and the winters mild on account of the gulf stream hitting the coast nearby. The area is famous as a centre of the counter revolution in France and there are interesting historical sites to see, such as the Abbaye Nieul , as well as the Chateaux of the Loire further afield. The Vendee’s sandy beaches are an hour’s drive away – our guests love the Plage du Veillon which backs onto a nature reserve and has many pools for paddling in and exploring. Also a big hit is Puy de Fou – France’s no.1 theme park which is 45 mins away. Rather than rides it is a series of spectacular shows which tell the story of the area on a grand scale, so for example to cover the Roman period there is a chariot race in a reconstructed Roman Amphitheatre! Tourists come to the Vendee just for this, so do book in advance. La Rochelle, an interesting historic harbour town, with a popular aquarium, is an hour and a quarter away, as is the famous Ile de Re.

From our meadow you can see the Donjon at Bazoges en Pareds 3kms away. It is a lovely medieval remnant with medieval garden and local life museum attached. The Auberge next door is a good local restaurant, and there are small shops and other amenities in the village. There are lots of walks marked out in the woods between us and La Caillere, and cycle routes too. Fontenay le Comte, 25 mins away, is the old capital of the area and has a traditional market on Saturdays. Nearby is the ancient Mervent-Vouvant forest which is lovely for walks, horseriding (at Ripauds stables near Vouvant) and there is also a great tree top adventure park in the forest near Mervent. Vouvant itself is well worth visiting - a very pretty town on a bend in the river with a tower supposedly built by the fairy Melusine in one night. The Pic Vert nearby is a great place for Galettes and a salad, in a lovely setting. Hiring a punt at Maillezais is a lovely way to see the green and peaceful network of canals south of Fontenay, and the horses of the Harras near La Roche sur Yon is a great half-day trip. The Indian Forest – an adventure park in the trees for those looking for an adrenaline rush- is very popular, and there are several other local attractions on that theme.

Our house is in a quiet peaceful neighbourhood so is suitable for those who want to ‘get away from it all’, so you could equally well have a wonderful relaxing holiday without leaving the property save to buy food!
