The good the bad and the ugly
We arrived on Saturday August 17 for a 1 week family vacation. The check in went great,keys were available when they said they would be.Upon walking in,it was just my husband & I at that moment.I had decided to take a video to send to my sister showing her the property, thankfully I did.The location is great,easy access to the beach and parks.The condo itself was large and comfortable for the 6 of us. The problems started as we were on our drive home .We received an email stating that the cleaning person found "holes" in the walls and a stain on the area rug under the living room table and 3 stains on the rug up in the loft. Marcel called my husband and told him the cleaning person said we left the condo very clean but he described the problems he found and would send us pictures. Marcel also stated he himself was there last week and the holes were not there. Marcel said he would use the insurance that we purchased to pay for the walls and rugs. My husband told him that I saw the stain on the living room area rug when we arrived...Marcell's response was " maybe that was already there" . I then remembered the video I took. When we got home I found the video and some still shots of that wall, time stamped for the time when we walked in, showing the holes were already there. We then sent the video and photos to Marcel. He agreed the holes were already there. I then sent him an email stating that we would be happy to pay for the rug due to the fact that soda was spilled on it and to take it out of the cleaning deposit but we expected our damage deposit back. He responded that the cleaning fee was waived because of a discount that we never saw on any of the paperwork provided to us and that we will be invoiced and billed for any damages to the unit and the stains are considered damage. Once the amount is determined it will be held from our deposit. That "He is the proprietor and will determine the amount". I explained we paid the cleaning fee & it wasn't waived the discount is not even the same amount as the cleaning fee.He then changed his story to he didn't look in the room with the holes the week before that he was upstairs fixing something.We did get the damage deposit back but he was originally quick to blame us & was ready to hold us responsible for holes in the walls that we didn't do. He also stated we are NOT welcome back as renters.He never even apologized for blaming us for holes in the walls.The situation was handled poorly by the owner.
We appreciate all feedback, as we value our guest and we have many are repeat renters each year, but the lack of care and consideration that was shown to our vacation home by these renters is very disappointing. We sell out each year and this was the first time we had guest do damage to our place, and then try to cover it up.
After our cleaning company contacted me with multiple pictures, to say there were large stains in multiple areas, and holes in the wall, I contacted the renters to inquire what was spilled so that we could treat it prior to the next family joining us. I was also asked if they knew what they did to the wall as the multiple holes were in the pictures, their immediate response all that was there when we got there, and I mentioned to them that per your contract, always check and notify the owner if problems, and that you reached out to me about how nice the place was, and where to put the trash, but you never mentioned any stains or holes. They never showed proof that anything was there when they checked in, but we let it go to focus on the next renters.
After multiple conversations, the gentleman admitted that they invited other kids over (not part of the contract) and they finally admitted to the spills. As I said at the time, if its just soda I can have my cleaning company clean it and it took multiple conversations saying it wasn't them, for them they finally admit it. They said they thought the cleaning fee covers damage and spills, it does not cover holes, stains and the trash they left in the unit.
All families have choices and to rent at the shore isn't cheap so we want to make sure all guest have a great stay, and I hope the review I left for these renters doesn't allow these guest visit and damage their property.
We try to rent to only families and no one under 25. Things happen as we know but its unfortunate Home Away doesn't vet all of its renters. I think its evident that these renters were not of appropriate age, or new renters because they treated our place with disdain, and like it was a playground and we will not be renting to these kids again.

Had an issue with check in and keys delaying an hour behind and troubling getting in touch with seller at first. Someone was able to get us in after 4pm, and the seller was apologetic for the issue. The garage is a very tight narrow squeeze but luckily didn't have to use the cars much at all so it wasn't a big deal- just glad we didn't take my husbands tacoma. Two flight of steep stairs to get in and out of condo (being 7m pregnant and for my disabled mother) and mostly move in day and out was an annoyance. Besides that the place was nice, location was great, had a very good vacation. Would stay again.
Thank you so much for the review and we appreciate the feedback. We apologize for the delay as our cleaning company inadvertently locked the top lock on the front door. That was a first and we have since rectified the issue with the cleaning company.
