About John VanderMyde
My wife and I have been in real estate, design, rentals, and construction on the Outer Banks for 20 years. I recently started thinking about designing and building "spec" homes again, and bought this property to rent to students and then tear down and re-develop. Then I fell in love. Within a week of starting work on it, the plan changed from student rentals-tear down, to restore and add modern touches to make a great weekly rental, bridging the way is used to be with the way people like things now. I spent six months doing everything I could think of to improve the place while keeping the old charm. We took the bathroom down to the studs to make it the nicest room in the house. Added a huge TV, fast internet, surround sound system, best stove I could find, new flooring, new doors, stripped and painted the old drywall, all new bedding, and more.
John VanderMyde purchased this Cottage in 2014
Why John VanderMyde chose Kill Devil Hills
A unique combination of new and old make for an inviting, homey, comfortable stay that you just can't get in a house with no history. I can't tell you how many people have told me about the great times they've had in this house, back to the glory days when it was built in the sixties by someone named "Steponovich" which is how it came to be called the "SeaWitch". It's located right in the middle of everything and only steps to the beach. I've priced it below our competition, cottage courts like the SeaSpray Cottages, which are booked solid for the summer at $1800 a week, while arguable offering more than they do.
What makes this Cottage unique
This cottage is quaint and open. Great for gathering to socialize. The cottage is walking distance to the beach, groceries, drug store, the new ABC store, nice restaurants, fast food, beach rentals, everything! We are also local owners, very knowledgeable about the real estate market in case you might have questions, and will do whatever it takes to make your stay pleasant. Need another pillow or utensil missing in the kitchen? Just give us a call!

New Years Getaway
We decided to do a last minute get away to the OBX. John, the owner, was great with communication and promptly responded to all of my questions. The cottage was clean and cute. We brought our dogs due to the large fenced in yard. Unfortunately, we could not use the yard due to sand spurs. The dogs got them in their paws the first day we were here. We had to cut an additional sand spur out of one of the dogs hair. Since the spurs weren’t in season, I assume they were scattered through out the yard. We tried a different area of the yard but unfortunately the dog picked up another spur. We weren’t taking any more chances, so we ended up taking the dogs out on leashes in the front of the cottage, to do their business. The small patches of grass in the front of the house were spur free. Other than the sand spurs, we enjoyed our stay and found the cottage very relaxing.
I'm shocked and very sorry to hear this! I spent a lot of time clearing the yard of them in the first couple years of ownership because I know how bad they are for dog paws.
Anyway, I wish you had let me know when you arrived, I would have been happy to send someone over to dig them out. Very strange they are appearing in January as well - must be all the warm weather. They usually show up in August, but I've not had any complaints until now. Oh well, time to break out the shovel...
Great place for a relaxing weekend!
Location was great! Super short walk to the beach, and close to many great restaurants as well as grocery, gas, etc. the property has everything you may need to be comfortable and relaxed.
Owner responds quickly
Hated to call the owner, John, but when we couldn't open the back door because the floor transom had lifted, and we couldn't get cable TV with the four remote controls, he came right away. He found somebody had "rewired" one of the TV components, and he screwed down that transom. (BTW- John, you left a couple drill bit extenders there. They await you on the kitchen counter.)
Yes, it's an aging beach house, but I prefer them over the bland newer ones, frankly. Lots of 1960's era knotty pine paneling extending into the kitchen. The dog yard is huge, the fencing very strong, and all gate latches function.
The beds are adequate, the kitchen is actually over-stocked with pots and pans, etc, the bathroom is updated nicely, the dining and LR seating is comfy, and the TV screen very big, once you figure out those remotes. A nice place for a beach home.
I'd stay there again if we return.
Thanksgiving Mini Vaycay
I had a short off season stay at the Sea Witch with one other person so I didn't full use all of the amenities, such as the cooking equipment. I enjoy cooking and could see I would have had a good time in the kitchen with the provisions! The space was lovely, not cluttered and would easily be comfortable for 6 people. The location was great and John was easy to contact and eager to make anything right! I didn't need anything made right, but I really appreciated his responsiveness. I would definitely look to see if this property is available when I come this way again. The price is very reasonable also! You get cable, WiFi, pretty much anything you need besides obvious personal products!
Outstanding Property and Owner
Very clean property, outstanding communication from Owner. Check in is a breeze with the lock box and key. Location is wonderful.
Television, Internet, bedrooms and bathroom all were top quality, with outstanding directions from the owner. Kitchen was perfect and well supplied.
We would highly recommend this property for anyone wanting a nice place to stay near the beach.
Just what we needed
Gave our family of 4 (including two kids under age 5) everything we needed for an off-season beach trip. Great response time fro the owner!
Right next door to one of the best and most reasonably priced restaurants on the beach, the Kill Devil Grill. Great wide beach just 150 steps away with good surf breaks at the moment. Beach Road bike path at the end of the driveway and lots of back streets are wonderful for walking and biking. You can't get a more central location for all the Outer Banks has to offer! Jockey's Ridge Sand Dune, Wright Brother's Memorial, Nags Head Woods Trail, Historical Nags Head Oceanfronts, all within 5 minutes of the Sea Witch.
