Miraculously, Stonegarden Cottage came through hurricanes Irma and Maria undamaged, and power has been restored to the cottage. The interior on the cottage is virtually the same as before the storms. We have repaired, restored or replaced mostly all exterior features, including solar panels, railings, fences, and our beautiful gardens and nature trails. We have a new Tesla Powerwall back-up battery for our solar panels which means there will be no noisy generator needed if the power goes out.
Stonegarden Cottage consists of upper and lower levels which can be rented together or separately, sleeping two to eight guests.
NOTE: Regarding availability in the Lower Level - see VRBO listing # 506984 for more detailed information about the Lower Level, including an active availability calendar.
Stonegarden Cottage offers you a private retreat where you will enjoy your dream vacation on Saint John in the US Virgin Islands. Offering the privacy, comfort and views of a villa, this unique rental home beckons many of our loyal guests back year after year.
This beautiful St. John vacation rental offers a gorgeous island view and on-site nature trails, close proximity to pristine National Park Beaches and restaurants and shops of Coral Bay - the peaceful side of St. John. Upgraded Nov. 2016 with all new windows & screens, decking, interior decor and more!
The cottage nestles within a shady, tropical forest, high up the steep slopes of St. John's Bordeaux Mountain. At the foot of the mountain lies picturesque Coral Bay harbor; beyond unfolds a panorama of peninsulas, islands, beaches and glowing turquoise channels that run east as far as Virgin Gorda and the Anegada Passage. This is the view Islands Magazine chose as the top spot in the world to watch the sunrise of the new millennium.
The Upper and Lower Levels of the cottage can be rented together or separately.
Upper Level: The fully-equipped, eat-in kitchen opens out onto the deck where you will dine or just relax while gazing at one of the most beautiful views in all the Caribbean, with an ever-changing light show of turquoise water and sundrenched islands.
The living room offers sleeping accommodations for two adults or children on the comfortable queen-size sofa-bed. There is a 2nd bedroom (called the 'bunk room') with bunk bed and ample closet space. It has it's own tiled bathroom - the open shower ceiling lets in the Caribbean sun and balmy breezes.
The master bedroom with queen-size, four poster bed and private, fully tiled bath has an expansive island view. The enclosed Caribbean 'garden shower' blends traditional stonework with the tropical environment.
Walkways from the front door connect into the stone paths and trails of Guavaberry Woods.
Lower Level: For the couple looking for a combination of affordability and comfort, the Lower Level is a perfect choice. Private and quiet, this charming apartment is air-conditioned, has tasteful decor, art by Caribbean artists, stained-glass windows and beautiful views to the British Virgins.
Enjoy the comfortable amenities of a queen-size bed, private bath with shower, a fully equipped kitchenette, dining table and chairs, and comfortable reading chair and lamp. You'll especially enjoy the private dining deck with its bistro table and chairs, lovely harbor view and direct access to the trails of Guavaberry Woods. The Lower Level has its own separate entrance, driveway and parking space.
The unit was built underneath the deck of the main house and with solid cypress ceiling panels to ensure you peace and quiet. A perfect getaway for the couple looking for affordable comfort and privacy.
Onsite Nature Trails: The best of St. John's natural beauty and astonishing biodiversity lies on-site at your doorstep. A trellised archway of hanging tropical flowers greets you as you enter and walk down a short stone stairway to the front door. The large (2/3 acre) hillside property is an ecological wonderland that invites wandering -- beautiful hand-crafted stone paths and gravel trails on several different levels lead you through the lush hardwood foliage of Guavaberry Woods, where picturesque and unique ponds, a meditation garden, bridge and benches, plus gardens of orchids, frangipani, hibiscus, bouganvilla, citrus and tropical fruit trees delight the eye.
Cool Retreat: Steady tradewinds, an easterly view and the lush surrounding forest make Stonegarden Cottage a comfortable tropical getaway year-round -- cool, quiet and peaceful. After a day on blazing white sand beaches or out on the glittering sea, it is delightful to return up the mountain to your forest retreat, savor a frozen drink while enjoying the view or gaze into a lily pond while hearing the breeze rustle the treetops.

About Thia & Raf Muilenburg, Owner
Raf is a native St. Johnian, who grew up in the quiet village of Coral Bay. Thia came to live on St. John in the early 90's and eventually they met and fell in love. After pursuing careers in California for fourteen years, they returned to their beloved island to live at Stonegarden Cottage from 2009 - 2014 with their two daughters, Missy and Allegra, in order for their children to be closer to their grandparents and to grow up in the wonderful community and natural environment that St. John offers.
Thia & Raf Muilenburg, Owner purchased this Cottage in 2005
Why Thia & Raf Muilenburg, Owner chose Estate Carolina
Buying property on St. John allowed us to pursue our dream of returning to St. John with our children. It took us almost 4 years to bring that dream to fruition, and renting Stonegarden Cottage to travelers in the meantime helped us save the funds necessary for the move. Now that we're back on the mainland, it's great fun to help travelers with accommodations, while lending a hand with travel advice and suggestions for what to do on the island.
What makes this Cottage unique
Stonegarden Cottage is a unique, mountainside retreat for nature lovers, with a gorgeous view of Coral Bay Harbor and extensive nature trails throughout the surrounding property. The cottage is quiet, safe and private, yet close to Coral Bay village and the VI national park beaches. Cooling tradewinds keep the cottage comfortable all year round. You can enjoy a hike up Bordeaux Mountain from the cottage, just one of many hikes nearby; the cottage is easily accessible from a smooth, paved road.

St John is back!!
We had such a hard time leaving St. John. It has become such a special place to us as has Stonegarden Cottage. As soon as we arrived in Cruz Bay we were thoroughly impressed with how hard everyone has and is continuing to work to repair the island. We immediately got “Thank you” after “Thank you” for coming. These sincere expressions brought tears to our eyes. It’s amazing how our beautiful earth, although beaten and bruised at times, can heal itself. Our week in Coral Bay didn’t disappoint. Stonegarden Cottage looks as beautiful as ever and we felt like home as soon as we walked in. Whitni is a terrific host and was very helpful - she’s definitely a keeper! We hope to be back to celebrate our 25th anniversary next year! Thank you for another great stay!
Million dollar view!
We had a wonderful stay in Coral Bay!! The cottage was perfect for our group of 4 adults and 3 kids- using both levels. Amenities were great, views from the deck AMAZING, and accommodations comfortable and well decorated. Bathrooms were beautiful and so fun! Gwen was super helpful - she made sure our stay was perfect and we had everything we needed. Thank you! We hope to return to St. John and would definitely stay here again!
I'm so happy that your group of 7 people loved Stonegarden Cottage so much that you plan to stay again on your next visit to St. John! That is the best outcome that we could ask for, and it means that all our efforts to make our cottage a great vacation rental, with excellent management, accommodations and amenities, are worth it. When you're happy, we're happy!
Thank you for your wonderful review!
All the best to you,
Thia Muilenburg, Owner
The cottage was comfortable and very nice. The master bathroom is something all by itself. Met the owner and had pleasant conversations every time as we have similar interest. Would recommend this vacation home to anyone. St John is a beautiful and interesting island with activities for all.
Thanks for writing your great review, we're delighted that you would recommend our cottage, that you loved the beautiful view and especially the master bathroom. Raf was happy to meet you, and we're so happy that you enjoyed playing the guitar (left by guest who return every year to the cottage). Any time music is made in the cottage, she's happy!

Beautiful home with a beautiful view
What a gorgeous house, well appointed with everything you could need. The location was very convenient, a short drive to town and shops. We had a lot of wind so we didn't spend too much time on the deck but it was perfect. Master bedroom was awesome, very comfortable and the bath, WOW, loved it! The kids had enough room to be on their own and liked that they had their own bath as well. Thank you for sharing your home with us, we will be back.
Thanks for your awesome review, I'm delighted that you and your family enjoyed staying at the cottage. So nice to hear so many positives, and the even the kids loved the space and private bath of their own. I miss our master bathroom at the cottage everyday because it is just so wonderful with the stonework, plants, and open ceiling that lets in the light and air. I'm glad you feel the same way! The breeze at the cottage is a great feature since it cools the house down and makes it comfortable all day long. I'm so happy you plan to return and look forward to hearing back someday soon!
All the best,
Another Wonderful Stay at StoneGarden
We've stayed here 3-4 times now and love it more than ever. What I look forward to most is the beautiful view from the deck, the garden path and the garden shower. Thia is wonderful to deal with, and everything is made very easy in planning and getting to the cottage-- this year they upgraded some of the furnishings, windows, etc. and the cottage was always beautiful and comfortable and now has a little extra polish--- and we had some new beach chairs. The old ones were in fine shape, however it was nice to have a variety of heights of chairs to take to the beach-- there are plenty of supplies here, a great kitchen, grill, games, wonderful books about the island and no need for a/c, the breeze and fans make it cool to sleep
I love this place- it's my first choice of accommodation every time we go to St. John and we've stayed at 6 other villas/B&B's, etc. in the past 15 years.
Thank you for your wonderful review, and for being a devoted guest! We're delighted that you continue to choose our cottage for your St. John getaways each time, we must be doing it right! So glad you liked the new windows, decor, beach chairs, etc. after our renovations and upgrades this past fall. All the best to you in the new year!
Thia and Raf
Breathtakingly peaceful setting!!
Dear Thia and Raf,
We just want to thank you for allowing us to experience your wonderful hilltop home. This was our first trip to St. John and while we fell more in love with the island every day, we truly could not wait to get back "home" to our deck after our excursions and relax in the beauty, sights and sounds of the mountain. The cottage had everything we needed to cook up some great dinners "plen aire". It is such a happy and inviting cottage and it's our hope that we make this an annual event. Enjoy the hummingbird feeder as our thank you gift for your guests. Gwen was also terrific and got us settled in quickly.
Thank you so much and see you next year!
Deb & Dave S.
Dear Deb and Dave,
Thanks for your wonderful letter - I'm so glad you enjoyed the cottage, and plan to return! We work hard to create a comfortable space inside and out where you can relax and feel at home, and hearing that we accomplished that makes it all worth it! And many thanks for the hummingbird feeder - everyone will appreciate seeing the birds visit the cottage.
All the best,
Thia & Raf
