Raleigh Barn - Detached Grade II Listed in a rural setting, two ensuite bedrooms

Raleigh Barn is a Grade II Listed converted milking parlour made of stone and cob in the grounds of a Listed farmhouse, all of which dates back to the 16th Century. We are in the heart of rural North Devon surrounded by peaceful farmland and hedgerows full of flowers and within 15 minutes drive of a long and varied coastline ranging from quiet sandy beaches to stunning rocky cliffs. This is a superb, relaxing location in any season. Those who love the great outdoors will love this area, ideal for nature lovers, water sports, walking, cycling, and more. The barn was newly converted in July 2014 and has a number of features to retain and enhance its character. It retains its original thick walls, has exposed beams and bags of character.

With all rooms on the same level, access is easy and both bedrooms have their own en-suites, one with a double-ended bath/shower and the other with a shower only. The bedrooms both have king-size beds and one room can be configured as a twin room if preferred.

The open plan living room has an area for dining and a well equipped kitchen with fridge, dishwasher, integrated oven and ceramic hob, and microwave. A washing machine (and dryer) and freezer can be found in the adjoining Boot Room. Furnished with comfortable fabric sofas and oak flooring throughout to complement the character of the cottage, the living area is bright and airy. There is oak flooring in the living area, kitchen and bedrooms and the whole barn is heated by underfloor heating from our biomass boiler. There is also a log burning stove in the living area for that extra cosy feeling on chilly nights!

French Windows open out onto the patio and garden with a seating area and BBQ and there is a secluded 2 acre meadow available for guests about 200 metres away along our private track. This has a small picnic table where you can enjoy distant views of Dartmoor and the rolling Devon countryside, while you do a bit of wildlife spotting.

There is private parking immediately behind the barn. In the village, less than 10 minutes’ drive away, is a friendly pub and shops.

Raleigh Barn was lovely. Clean comfortable and with lovely views over the countryside. The owners were kind and friendly without being intrusive. We enjoyed Sally the dog visiting and the hens. One of the best cottages we have stayed in.

Spotlessly clean barn in a stunning location

Had a fantastic week in this beautiful barn. Myles and Sarah welcomed us with home-made scones, which were delicious. It is spotlessly clean, very well equipped and in a stunning, rural location. There is plenty to do for all ages. Loved our daily fusses with Sally their dog and would thoroughly recommend.

Lovely barn

We had a great time. The barn is just perfect. There was nothing we missed. We felt very welcomed by Sarah and Myles. Perfect if you are looking for a quite holiday home in the nature. The coast ( South West Coast Path) and also Dartmoor and Exmoor close enough to explore.

Excellent rural retreat

We spent a week at the barn and enjoyed the peaceful rural location. The property was extremely clean on arrival and we devoured the delicious scones, cream and jam. The hosts have extensive local knowledge and their guide helped to point us in the right direction. They are on hand if you need but never in the way. This is a rural location suitable for day trips and exploring. Our favourite trips were to Putsborough Beach, as well as the Tarka Trail bike ride. The property has books and board games and our children enjoyed playing North Devon Monopoly!

Wonderful!

We loved our two weeks at Raleigh Barn. It's exactly as described and probably better than the photographs show. Lots of character, but with every home comfort. It's very well equipped and everything is of good quality. Excellent bedding and towels too. Myles and Sarah are delightful and we enjoyed their company - almost a much as we enjoyed Sally, their gorgeous springer spaniel, whom we are missing dreadfully. The location is really tranquil and we spent a lot of time just relaxing inside or in the garden - gazing at the bucolic views. There's easy access to all the main places of interest in North Devon, as it's fairly centrally located. We didn't eat out at all, preferring to cook and eat at home, where there was more appeal and which added to our relaxation. The kitchen was a pleasure to work in. All in all, we could not recommend Raleigh Barn more highly. Many, many thanks to Sarah, Myles and Sally for making our stay so memorable. Paul & Martin - Vancouver Island, Canada.

Ein wunderschönes, traumhaftes Cottage

Wir hatten einen traumhaften Aufenthalt. Es ist so ein wunderschöner Ort zum Entspannen. Myles und Sarah sind tolle Gastgeber. Wir wurden mit Leckereien und Blumen empfangen. Früh hatten wir Besuch von den Hühnern und von Sally & Sally. 1 Woche war leider viel zu kurz.

A comfortable rural property

A lovely property deep in the North Devon countryside, the friendly owners have clearly given a lot of thought to providing every comfort for their visitors. The local area is quiet and beautiful with the opportunity for walks around the property. The spectacular Devon and Cornwall coasts are within easy reach with many places to visit and explore. We would definitely recommend a stay.

A wonderful place to stay

Wonderful North Devon holiday

The whole week was excellent. The barn itself is beautiful. It was clean and very tastefully furnished. We felt very comfortable & at home. Myles the host provided excellent instructions & he was so helpful all through the week. The setting of the barn is just so beautiful & peaceful. Would we go back? You bet! What a wonderful week we had staying at the beautiful barn. It was even more fabulous in the flesh and we couldn’t have been happier. Beautifully finished, spotlessly clean and with plenty of extras that made our holiday that much easier. Down a narrow lanes but worth it. Not sure I would say how nice it was because you will all want to go and go back again then there wouldn’t be a slot for us again. Excellent place. Ideal for seeing north Devon. Ps. We booked again for next year

Rural break

Had a lovely stay, the barn was just as advertised. Myles the owner provided very good directions and we were kept informed regarding changes due to COVID restrictions. It is a very well appointed accommodation with high spec finish which was tastefully decorated for the festive period. It has everything you need for a very comfortable stay with books games WiFi, log fire and very comfortable beds. A very welcoming home from home

Another lovely stay!

This is our second time returning to Raleigh Barn. I can’t praise the owners and accommodation enough. It was absolutely spotless (we felt very safe considering the Covid-19 situation). The beds are so comfortable and you have everything you need for a fantastic stay. Lovely homely touches are there - fresh flowers, handmade soap and welcome scones but best of all Sally the dog! There is a lovely garden area to the back and beautiful views from the barn at the front. Thank you for a great stay!

Really lovely week

Such a great week at Raleigh Barn. The barn is lovely and was perfect for the four of us. Having the 2 en-suites was great with the kids. So many great places to visit and lovely, Sally the dog was a real hit with us all. Myles and Sarah were perfect hosts, they gave us recommendations for local restaurants so we could book in advance and we enjoyed every meal. The scones, Neal’s yard hand sanitizer and the veg basket they left for us were all very much appreciated. We would definitely recommend Raleigh Barn thank you Myles and Sarah.

Wonderful Raleigh Barn

We have just spent two wonderful weeks at Raleigh Barn. It is set in the most beautiful of locations, in the midst of lush, tranquil countryside and yet near enough to the coast for daily, frequent beach trips. The barn is lovely; it is very well equipped with plenty of space for us as a family of four and was just a pleasure to return to each day. Sally and Myles were brilliant hosts, very accommodating and offered us some great local tips and information. We really enjoyed our stay. We imagine the barn with the log burner on will be just magical, and hope to return in both the summer and winter months.

We are Myles and Sarah Thomas. Myles is an ecologist and worked in environmental protection for over 30 years. Sarah is a Nurse Practioner at a local doctor’s surgery. In January 2013, we bought a 16th Century Grade II Listed Devon Longhouse in North Devon with plans for a self-sufficient, low carbon life style supported by two high quality, characterful holiday cottages.

It took over a year to repair the main house by making it weather tight and warm, and a further 4 months to convert one of the outbuildings to holiday accommodation. We completed Raleigh Barn in August 2014 and have just converted Raleigh Cottage for Sarah's mum.

Why they chose this property

Why North Devon? We love the peace and quiet and beautiful variety of the area. It’s such a contrast to the hectic part of the country that we used to live in! Rugged Exmoor, sandy surfing beaches, secluded coves, fantastic walking and cycling. Not to mention the rolling hills, beautiful countryside and friendly people (the pubs are quite good too!).
