Room to relax – with seven bedrooms, three large reception rooms and plenty of space for 7-14 adult guests (up to 16 guests including children), The Mount has been used to celebrate special birthdays, hosted theatre groups rehearsing plays, and provided comfortable accommodation for guests of couples getting married at nearby Durlston Castle. Grandparents have enjoyed a week away with their children and grandchildren, with room to eat and play together and space enough to relax.
Built in the Arts & Crafts style in 1908, The Mount sits in a prominent position in Swanage in the stunning Isle of Purbeck. The town's sandy beaches, cafes, restaurants and pubs are a lovely walk downhill one way, while in the other direction the dramatic cliffs of the Jurassic Coast and the rare fauna and flora of Durlston await. The house itself is surrounded by a large garden hidden behind stone walls and bay hedges, and there's a music room and a full-size pool table inside.

We had a fabulous stay the house was amazing. The Kitchen was as well kitted out as my own. Beautiful views and such a lovely garden. The walk was a bit steep into town but not too bad. The pool table supplied endless fun.

The instructions to get there and how to get in were clear and we had no difficulty finding it and getting into the property. Everything was provided for, plenty of kitchen utensils etc. very clean and we all thoroughly enjoyed our stay as it was in a great location

A magical house for a girls weekend

We booked this to celebrate a friend of ours. The house is perfect - from drinks in the garden, a game of traitors around the dining room table to dancing to the made up songs on the piano, it was wonderful. The house couldn’t be better located for the town and beaches, and our hosts couldn’t have been better. Highly recommend.

The house was absolutely amazing! We stayed here for our wedding with the bridal party. There was plenty of space for us all to get ready and everyone loved the house. The kitchen was well supplied and there was plenty of space in the music room and living room to relax. The kids enjoyed the garden and the toys. Elaine was very communicative about the check in and out process and even let us check out a bit late on the last day! I would definitely stay here again!

The host was extremely helpful and made the check in process easy, The location was great, only a 10 minute walk in Swanage, you do have to walk up a hill to get back to the house, which wasn’t an issue for us

Well equipped, plenty of space both inside and out . Need to be physically mobile due to hilly terrain ( not a problem for us). Family members aged 4 months to 87 years appreciated the music room , croquet set , train set and wheeley bugs as well as the pool table . General facilities good , but some of the property dated and could do with some TLC , but would however recommend for large groups

The Mount is a beautiful attractive house set in an ideal location, within walking distance of the sea at Swanage and lovely Durlston castle. All the rooms are clean and well equipped many with large on-suite bathrooms. The owners have maintained it to a high standard and equipped it with everything for a super stay. The garden is great and secure for doggies to romp around. The pool table and music room are real bonuses. The house is warm and cosy with excellent Central heating and log fire if desired . I highly recommend this house for a lovely stay.

Fantastic house for a family gathering

Perfect house with lots of large rooms and beautiful garden. The host was extremely helpful and welcoming. The children all loved the pool table and piano and fantastic garden. Durlston country park is at the end of the street and super for dog walks through the fields and along the costal path. Would highly recommend this house !

Wonderful, open, large house with views and pleasant grounds in nice neighborhood. Close to costal pathway, local park, beaches, and town. Kitchen very well stocked, so easy to cook in or go out for meals. Hostess especially thoughtful with accommodating our infant and children, and extremely easy to work with before and during our stay. Overall, exceeded our expectations.

50th Birthday - Family Celebration

I contacted Elaine just 8-weeks prior to the celebration having been let down by another property and the experience from that point was delightful. 14 of us were getting together to celebrate my wife's birthday and all of the communication between Elaine and I (supported by my daughter) was superb, speedy, really helpful responses and directions made arriving and settling into the beautiful house so simple and seamless. Upon arrival, we were delighted to find an amazing property, lovingly looked after and with attention to some of the smallest detail (for example the soaps in the rooms were locally made - loved that). We were blessed by some excellent weather during the long-weekend, and that helped make the experience for all so enjoyable (albeit supported by many bottles of bubbly) - the rooms were clean, well-maintained and bright. The living areas were spacious and full of all of the items to make live easy, plenty of utilities and cookware made things so simple, with 2 x dishwashers to assist in keeping this tidy during our stay. Some additional items which you wouldn't normally find, but added to the overall quality of the experience were a piano, a selection of guitars and recorders plus a full sized pool table which doubled up as a dining table - great idea... delighted with the property. The garden was large and spacious, the weather helped and we played garden games, including badminton and croquet, which were provided and a BBQ which included simple instructions for use and keep clean for others to use in the future. Outside of the venue, we took a walk across the coastal paths with 2 dogs and small children, that was a great experience. We also visited a local café / bar (Salt-Pig) for a Sunday lunch which was delightful, friendly and catered for local ciders and superb food and local experience. All in all, the celebration of my wife's 50th birthday could not have gone better - she had a great time, as did we all and the wine Elaine gave us as a moving in gift helped - thank you for that. 10/10 - we will visit for our 60th in a decade or so :-).

Excellent accommodation in Swanage. Great house with loads of room and exactly as described. Enjoyed the pool table. The bath robes were much appreciated and the sound system was also very good. Clean and well fitted out, comfortable beds, plenty of hot water and everything in good condition. We had absolutely no problems and would very highly recommend the accommodation.

Fantastic property

The Mount is a beautiful character property in a lovely location. It is equipped with everything you could possibly need for a great get-away. My friends and I go away together for a long weekend every year and the Mount is definitely at the top of our list for a wonderful break. Although we would normally go out to eat, we found ourselves eating in in the evenings just so that we could enjoy the house. There is so much to do and see around Swanage that we are already thinking that we will need to go back. We were very lucky to have great weather but might have had a chance to make more use of the music room, games, puzzles and art materials if it had been wet! Thank you Elaine

My family and I had a great stay here, we found the house well equipped, it had lots of spare equipment and a well stocked kitchen. It had enough things to entertain all 8 children that was there, they had an art drawer, garden toys, cards, books, train tracks. Ideal for large family get-together.

We took the Mount for a long weekend in February for a family get-together of 15 of all ages (4 - 70) together with two dogs. The immediate impression was of a spacious and comfortable a house with a friendly feel to it, well furnished in a manner sympathetic to the building. Upstairs we particularly valued the flexibility of the sleeping arrangements, so that we could choose to have four girls together on the top floor, two boys together and only the youngest sharing with parents. The main bedrooms felt very grand and had good views Downstairs, the second sitting room / music room / TV room and the huge kitchen meant that there was plenty of space for everyone without people being on top of each other and with different groups doing different things. The house had everything we wanted with plenty to keep people amused - the pool table under the dining table top and the selection of musical instruments to be played were particularly popular. It was also very practical, from the tiled entrance hall in which to leave muddy and sandy footwear to the boiler / drying room at the back of the house (we were fortunate in having dry weather and did not need it but in bad weather or for a longer stay it would have been a godsend). The garden is large and with lots of interest - the children enjoyed running round in it and at a warmer time of year it would be delightful to sit out in. The location is convenient; a comfortable walk to the coast at Durston and to Peverill point as well as to the centre of Swanage and its beach (subject to the return from Swanage being quite an uphill climb), We didn't actually meet Elaine but all our phone and email conversations with her were very friendly and she did everything to make sure we had all we wanted to enjoy our stay - Many thanks Elaine.

Wonderful house beautifully equipped for all the family.

A comfortable, cosy house; extremely well equipped for all visitors. Plenty to do and plenty of places to enjoy a book or play some music or have a game of pool. Lots of space inside and out and so close to the coast! Our extended family had a marvellous weekend celebrating a senior birthday.

Wonderful house

Don't look any further! The Mount cannot be surpassed. I have just celebrated my 60th birthday with four generations of family in this gorgeous home. It is so much more than a holiday rental. Elaine has thought of everything. There is no compromise on quality or comfort. The beds are sublime, toiletries are plentiful and fluffy gowns are provided for all adults. Music, books, games, toys, art and craft, pool table – it's all there with something for all age groups. My elderly mother proved to be a pool shark – who knew? While my three-year-old granddaughter sobbed because she didn't want to leave!! 'Scorched Earth Policy' does not exist here. Elaine and Carl provide a full cupboard of condiments, oil, herbs and spices and dishwasher tablets in abundance. To top it all the house was decorated for Christmas and looked exquisite. I grew up in nearby Bournemouth and always loved visiting Swanage and Purbeck so after starting a family in London we moved to raise our children by the seaside in Swanage. It's a pleasure to be able to preserve an old piece of the town and see other families enjoy The Mount too.

Why they chose this property

Swanage is fantastic for holidays! A wonderful safe sandy beach, a pier, a steam railway, a lighthouse and lifeboat station, a cinema and theatre, cafes and pubs and lots of festivals throughout the year. And the unspoilt countryside of Purbeck is on your doorstep with loads of wildlife, wild flowers, wild swimming – and some of the best walking in the UK.

What makes this property unique

The Mount is one of the largest houses in the area and maintains much of its Edwardian charm. It was built by a local entrepreneur William Symonds, who made his fortune in Cardiff building housing using Purbeck stone and became a city councillor. He had The Mount built in 1908 as a holiday home for his family in the latest Arts & Crafts style, complete with stable and coach house, orangery, servants' rooms and back stairs. Later it was for many years the home of the vicar of St Mary's who added the patio and rockery and much of the planting. Although grand in size, it's a warm and welcoming home with space to have fun together or to find some space for yourself.
