Overview

About the property

Spacious 3 bedroom house (1 family, 1 triple, 1 double, sleeps 9, all en suite)

Situated on a cliff at the north end of Kuruwitu Marine Conservancy, the house enjoys lovely views and gentle breezes. Tastefully furnished and comfortable. It has a mature garden and a fun sundowner deck just above the Indian Ocean. There is a gorgeous 12 x 6m infinity pool with a stunning pool house. There is a cook, a housekeeper, a groundsman and Maintenance man. The house has good security. Staff quarters can accommodate one extra if required. Direct beach access at low - mid tide. Steps to beach relatively steep for the elderly/infirm. Beach access at very high tide (for keen body surfers) or for elderly folk unable to manage the steps is only a few hundred metres down the road on the public access route.

The pool and beach: Kuruwitu Beach is one of the last unspoilt beaches on the Kenyan coast. Despite it being blissfully bare of people and beach boys , it is secure as there are 'askari's' patrolling for the marine conservancy. It is also unusually clean as the conservancy oversee the picking up of the debris that is common along most coastlines. The snorkeling metres off the shore is incredible - coral heads mean an abundance of tropical fish, octopus, lobster. There is a glass bottom boat as well as a fishing/dolphin spotting boat for hire. The conservancy also offer guided tours of the reef where there are even more wonderful snorkeling spots.

The infinity pool set in front of the house has a 'baby pool' section. The adjoining pool house is large and comfortable with a bar and drinks fridge as well as a living and dining area, a water feature and sunbeds. The terrace below with plunge pool is not safe for young or unaccompanied children.

The house: The master bedroom has its own sectioned off veranda as well as a nook with a desk and an extra bed. The middle bedroom has a double bed and a sofa bed suitable for a young child. The rear bedroom has 2 single beds and a bunk bed. There is a small TV with a DVD player in this room. There is a selection of kid and adult movies that can be borrowed. All bedrooms have air-conditioning and standing fans in case of preference or power cuts. All bedrooms are ensuite with large bathrooms with showers.

There is wi-fi but guests need to buy airtime from Safaricom and log on to choose a bundle they wish to purchase with the airtime. Safaricom scratch cards are easily available including at the closest villages.

The sitting/dining area is big and very airy with good security wrought iron all around. It is tastefully furnished in a coastal style with wooden overhead fans and 'lamu beds' as sofa's. There is a games chest with scrabble, poker etc.

The kitchen is relatively small compared to the rest of the house and is manned by Reuben who is a competent cook specialising in seafood, curries and swahili style cooking. Pili is the housekeeper and takes care of the laundry and general cleaning.

Activities: If you can bear to drag yourself away from the fabulous pool and beach - the world class Vipingo Ridge golf course (soon to be 36 holes) is less than a 10 minute drive away. The elegant club house has a good restaurant in a beautiful setting. Kilifi which has supermarkets and a bustling little town is a 15 minute drive away to the North. Dhow trips can be taken up the creek here. Diving is available at the famous Mnarani Club. There is also sailing and water-ski-ing available at the picturesque boatyard. Malindi is a 1 hour drive Northwards.

Head 15 minutes south and Mtwapa has several excellent restaurants and tourist activities. The Bamburi Nature trail is 25 minutes from the house as is the Nakumat shopping centre. Nyali is less than 30 minutes away with a cinema, shopping complex, hotels and night clubs. Old town Mombasa (Fort Jesus etc) is approx 40 minutes drive depending on the traffic.

About Lyndsey McIntyre

We live in Nairobi, Kenya and have spent our lives in this beautiful country. We have been fortunate enough to have travelled widely and also own a small village house in Southern France. We eventually hope to spend half our time there and half our time at the property in Vipingo, which is my favorite place on the Kenyan Coast. I work as a photographer/casting and model agent/lead ladies tours to Morocco and India and also occasionally take on interior design jobs. My husband works with a company that designs and manufactures high end tents for lodges etc.

Why Lyndsey McIntyre chose Kilifi

My mother in law invested in this property some 16 years ago. She passed it on to her three children some years later and my husband and I bought out his siblings about 3 years ago and consequently invested more in the property, designing and building the pool, installing air conditioning etc. We will continue to upgrade and improve the house as funds allow.

What makes this house unique

The house is in such a unique position, the beach so unspoiled and the development of the marine park has made it wonderfully unique. We enjoy the most incredible views and there are lots of different chill out spots such as the sun-downer deck which can feel like being at the prow of a ship at high tide, the lower pool terrace, the sunbathing deck at night where the view of the stars is fantastic. No beach boys means none of the usual harassment that you find on the Kenyan coast. Stunning snorkeling just metres off the beach is not something that you find in many places on the E.African coastline. The Kuruwitu Marine Conservancy project is being used as a prototype for new projects along the coast.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Bliss and tranquility is found here. Thank you for sharing paradise. Reuben and co were fantastic - the food was incredible. We can't wait to return.

Notes:
The steps down to the beach could be difficult for elderly (although my 82 year old father in law manages fine) or people with mobility problems but the pool should be easy enough to use. We advise against children under 8 being allowed on the lower pool deck unless strictly supervised as there is a drop off into cacti. Care must be taken on the ocean side deck for children or inebriated adults! There is good mobile network. There is a small selection of DVD's on site. All bedrooms are air-conditioned but in case of a power cut the inverter will only run the fans for a limited period.

Beautiful home for a much needed getaway

  • 5 of 5

The home is beautifully situated on the coast with mature gardens and scenic views and is attended to by truly wonderful staff!

We enjoyed our stay here so very much that we extended our stay for a few more days. The kids were either in the pool or on the beach or out on the reef. It was wonderful to get them away from their electronics and they truly immersed themselves into the wonderful environment that Neem Tree offered. Rueben and Pili and Emmanuel and Karisa, the staff were very welcoming and attentive to our well being throughout our stay. We cant wait to go back again!!

Clean, beautiful, tranquile paradise.

  • 5 of 5

It was just awesome. From the beginning, all went smooth. Lyndsey went the extra mile(s!) to make sure we had all information that we could possibly need during our stay. The people she has working for her are lovely. The house is amazing and we spent almost all our time at the pool or on the very safe and deserted beach. Monkeys came to visit us sometimes in the morning, and we had fresh lobster, prawns, squid, red snapper...... We really asked ourselves why it is again that we live in Uganda and not here..!

Lovely family holiday house

  • 5 of 5

The house was exactly as advertised with a massive infinity pool and friendly staff. We spent our days being lazy around the pool and snorkeling in front of the house. Reuben, the cook, sourced fresh seafood from the local fishermen and prepared it daily for us. The detailed information provided before we arrived was very helpful.

The best of the unspoilt Kenyan coast

  • 5 of 5

Lyndsey and Rob were a great help even before we set off introducing us to car hire companies, advising on best modes of travel and getting us into the New Years Eve party at the nearby Beach Club and helping stock the larder. The SafariLink flight into Vipingo Ridge is a game changer.

Once there we had one of the best holidays we've had for years where we immediately fell into a gentle pattern of Kenyan coastal life. Up early for a cup of tea before snorkelling in the marine conservation park after which we returned for partly Kenyan (fresh fruit) and partly English breakfast (bacon and eggs).

Lazy days were spent reading by the pool, wandering on the reef at low tide or a brief wander up the beach up to the fabulous Beach Bar for drinks or the occasional lunch. Every night we sat overlooking the ocean drinking cocktails and eating fresh fish or shellfish which had been caught earlier that day by the local fishermen. We spent the evenings chatting and playing cards.

The house itself is in the old colonial style which we love. Very relaxed and not at all prissy. This is a house that is lived in and loved. The monitor lizard visited the pool every day and the kingfisher took a daily bath in the infinity pool.

Reuben, Pilli and Emmanuel were wonderful and looked after us beautifully. On the first night of our arrival there was a problem with the cistern but it was fixed the next day.

If you want a five star hotel full of beautiful people and a power shower then this is not the place for you. If you want to be in an authentic coastal experience in a place of great natural beauty then look no further. We all had the most wonderful holiday and we shall definitely be back

A quaint, Kenyan coastal paradise

  • 5 of 5

Tucked in the corner of the sensational Kiruwitu beach and on a marine park! A quaint house with lovely service, it was everything we wanted and more; Ruben cooks the most delicious prawn curry, breakfast by the pool ensured I felt like I was on the most wonderful private holiday, the pool was so inviting that we could hardly move away from it. I'm sorry that the person on 13th December felt the need to complain so bitterly, I was nurtured and cared for and am definitely going back.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your positive review. It is a huge relief after the very distressing review we recently received. We will continue to work to improve the experience for our guests and learn from our mistakes.

Fourth and probably last visit

  • 2 of 5

We have stayed at the Neem tree a number of times but, alas, suffered when an anti algae agent was added to the pool staining us all yellow. Apologies were offered; it is easy to say sorry rather more difficult it appears to follow up and put meaning in these words. Our 7 year old was worried as her swimming costume turned yellow and she saw her dad dyed yellow. Protestations of this will clear were not backed by actuality.

Given we have been to Neem Tree 5 times, and seen the lack of investment as this beautiful property run on a daily basis by a great cook and host, then the nature of response from the owner was appalling. It seems no investment has been made in the property to support the team on the ground, plastic sheeting across the roof, stairs to upper deck rickety and even the dart board having seen better days. Rust on the metal work (well beyond expected amounts from sea water and air) and we even suffered with mould on the seats where little or no cleaning of significance had been undertaken. My Mother-in-Law, who first stayed at Neem Tree some 6 or 7 years ago was aghast at how the property had become run down.

A sad situation and one making us decide not to return given the owners seem to value short term monetary gain over the long term well being of their own team, the property and the well being of paying guests

Owner's Response: I am so sorry to see this very damaging review from a regular visitor. When our pool attendant put in anti algae one evening, we were shocked when the guest called to say that their costumes and one gentleman's hair and skin had turned yellow. We immediately called the supplier of our pool chemicals and they say the matter is still under investigation. I followed up several times and always copied in the guest. I am not sure what he means when he says 'its easy to say sorry rather more difficult to follow up and put meaning in these words'. The pool did clear and overall the guests had 1/1.5 days where they did not all swim in the pool. I offered them an extra day free which they declined. What began as a mild grumble seems to have turned nasty the more I have shown that I am following up and I am not sure what they are expecting of me. The guest complained that the container says you should avoid eye contact and later claimed that he had to buy medicine for his daughters eyes (he didn't tell me this until several weeks later). The container is referring to a concentrated state. The fact is we put in an algaecide for pools that mixed with 90,000 litres of water and we don't know why the problem occurred. We employ a maintenance person 3 - 4 times a week and use expensive rust convertor regularly on all the grill work in an effort to keep the degenerating effects of being so close to the sea under control. I re-covered several of the pool chairs recently (and the cushions on the dining chairs) and we are waiting for more of the same material to be imported to do the rest. The roof area is one of many chill out areas in a big house - it is an open area with a couple of sofa's. Monkeys play here, mess up cushions and chew up darts. Children play on the dart board and whilst it is another fun component to the house, we do not advertise it as a smart gaming area. The flat roof has proved difficult with regards to leaks inside the house which we are constantly re-painting and thus we have covered it with white PVC until such time as we can afford to properly re-roof this very large area. This roof is hidden by a wall and you glimpse it as you climb the steps, it's not something that is spoiling a view. We love this house dearly and put all we can afford into keeping it in good shape. We do all we can to look after our guests and staff. I apologised profusely to this guest for the inconvenience and worry and am devastated by this review.

Located 40 min north of historic Mombasa, the house has direct access on to the beautiful, safe and unspoilt shoreline of the Kuruwitu Marine Conservancy which offers fantastic swimming and snorkelling. The Conservancy offers: boat rides to spot dolphins or go fishing outside the reef/glass bottom boat/guided walks to the reef.

Fishermen bring freshly caught seafood to the door. Vipingo Village stocks basic household items (7 min drive). Vipingo Ridge (10 minutes) has a stunning clubhouse with a restaurant on its world class golf course. Mtwapa Creek and Nyali Beach (30-35 min) both offer good restaurants, night life, scuba diving, medical centres, supermarkets, water sports and alternative entertainment such as the Bamburi Nature trail, a water park, a cinema complex and a casino. Kilifi Creek (15 min) has deep sea fishing, deep sea diving, sailing, water-ski-ing, dhow sundowner cruises and The Boatyard is a popular place for lunch. However, once at Neem Tree its unlikely you will want to go anywhere.

Other Activities: Snorkelling, glass bottom boat trips, sundowner dhow trips, reef walks and snorkeling

Golf: The world class 18 hole (soon to become 36 holes) Vipingo Ridge Golf Course is less than a 10 minute drive away. The course was designed by David Jones and boasts a 5 star club house open to the public. Temporary membership with golf clubs is available at very competitive prices.
