Overview

About the property

Cottage, 3 Bedrooms + 1 Bedroom in optional side cottage 2.5 Baths. Sleeps 6-10)

La Ménagerie is a late 18th century stone cottage and former wine-maker’s house with two detached barns. It is located in central Loire Valley, right in the heart of the Grand Chateau area: the Chambord,Cheverny and Chenonceau 'golden triangle'.

The cottage itself sits in the midst of woods, fields and vineyards, a very tranquil location, near a small hamlet of four farms and cottages. Yet, the villages of Chitenay or Fougeres-sur Bievre are at biking distance (2 miles). The small town of Contres, with all services and facilities, including two supermarkets and a weekly street market, is 10 min. away by car. The royal city of Blois is only 10 miles away. From Paris, it is about 2 hours and a half car ride and one hour and a half by train (Blois-Paris Austerlitz railway stations).

The house is typical of the traditional 'longère' style, with a long facade and an upper floor with dormer windows. Its surface is approximately 2045 square feet, or 190 m2. With three bedrooms, two bathrooms and two powder rooms with WC and basin, it can accommodate up to six adults in comfort, plus two youngsters in the family room and den. A renovation completed in 2005, preserved the character of the winemaker house while making it as comfortable as any contemporary home. Indeed, this property is not only charming... but also very comfortable! At “La Ménagerie”, charm does rime with comfort. It features quality beds and mattresses, fluffy towels, washer AND dryer, THREE WCs, two full bathrooms and two powder rooms (one at each floor), gourmet kitchen utensils and equipment, in particular. And a Finnish Sauna!

It is furnished with country style and a few French antiques, with a touch of international contemporary design, and decorated with antique paintings and tapestries. It features wooden ceiling beams, hardwood floors and a fireplace.

The house is set on two floors. The ground floor features a large living-room and dining area centered around a fireplace. The kitchen is open to the living and dining areas. It is well equipped with gourmet cooking utensils. The dining area has a large table that can sit up to eight persons.

The main bedroom downstairs has a queen size bed and its French window opens to a pergola and a deck around the pool on the South-West facade (enjoy the sunsets!). The other bedroom on the ground floor has twin beds; its French window opens to a patio (North-East facade), with teak table and chairs shadowed by pine trees and silver birch trees. The ground floor also features a laundry room with a SAUNA, a full bathroom with a shower and toilet, and a powder room with a toilet and basin.

The third bedroom is upstairs and has a full size bed under the roof. It is lightened with two dormer windows and is en suite with a bathroom that has a bathtub, and a powder room with a toilet and basin. The bedroom also opens into a library full of books in English, French and Spanish. On this same first floor, there is a family room with a flat-screen TV and sound system. This family room can accommodate two children or teenagers in a sofa bed.

In addition to the main house, a side/self standing charming cottage with a veranda and a full bathroom can accommodate two more guests in comfort in case you would have to accommodate two additional guests for your family and siblings reunion. This is optional and it is not included in the basic rental fees for the property. No guests will be occupying the side cottage, though, if you rent the main cottage, in order to ensure full privacy to your party.

With numerous windows, large skylights and a South- West main exposure, the house enjoys lots of sunlight and great views of night skies full of stars. Windows on the south-west side look towards the pool and nearest hamlet; other windows have stunning views on the surrounding fields, vineyards and woods.

About Patrick

The owner is a Frenchman retiree from an international organization based in the Washington DC area. He manages his property himself and will do his best to make your rental experience stress free. He is very responsive and will provide you with the information needed to fully enjoy all the benefits of staying in his property. A full info pack that includes things to do and a restaurant selection For more than ten years he has been locally assisted by local house caretakers, committed to make you feel at home with an authentic and unpretentious sense of hospitality.

The owner bought that property in 1989, a couple of weeks before being assigned to the USA for professional reasons. He bought a property in that area because he has family roots in the Loire Valley: his grandmother was born and raised in the area; this is why he is so familiar with it.

He often stays at 'La Menagerie' with his wife, children and best friends. This is where they have their family reunions.

Since he oftentimes travels abroad and doesn't like smartphones, instant messaging and all that, the best way to communicate with him is through Emails.

Patrick purchased this cottage in 1989

Why Patrick chose Centre-Loire Valley

First: location: it is hard to find a better base for chateau hopping: “La Ménagerie” is right in central section of the Loire Valley, in the heart of the so called “golden triangle” of French Grand Chateaux: Chambord, Cherverny and Chenonceau. Second: location: “La Ménagerie” sits in a exceptionally quiet and relaxing environment, so enjoyable for nature lovers! Walk-out from the house and follow the 300 Km of secure and well signaled bike paths and hiking trails throughout the chateau country. Third: location: “La Ménagerie” is not in the middle of nowhere!: it belongs to the jurisdiction of Chitenay, a charming village with a boulangerie/grocery and a gourmet Auberge-Restaurant; farmers markets, good restaurants and supermarkets are countless in the neighboring localities such as Bracieux or Cour-Cheverny, in small towns such as Contres or Amboise or even cities (the Royal city of Blois, being only 15 min. away by car). This the French art of living at its best! Also because it is ideal for family and friends reunions. The cottage’s layout ensures privacy in each bedroom with an en suite bathroom upstairs, while offering an ideal set-up for unforgettable moments all together. Kids love it! They love to play in the pool, watch dragonflies and French frog in the little pond. And they love the amusement parks and children museums all around, the Beauval Zoo, in particular, one of the very few Panda zoos int the world.

What makes this cottage unique

Previous guests from all around the world have posted outstanding reviews highlighting what a unique experience their stay at La Menagerie was. Check them-out on some the most visited vacation rental sites. We have returning guests for the third time! To them, La Ménagerie has become their home away from home! They have loved to watch the hot air balloons or beautiful peacocks flying over the property; play golf in the Cheverny castle estate park (a few minutes away by car); they have loved the views from any window of the cottage, over fields, woods, vineyards and ponds; they have loved dining or sipping a glass of local wine on the deck around the pool with stunning views on the country side around. They have loved biking to the village to the bakery or the restaurant's garden and terrace in Chitenay; or simply walking-out from the house and explore the beautiful surroundings through so many hiking and biking trails. Foodies have enjoyed cooking in a well equipped kitchen with gourmet utensils or going-out to a restaurant for a unique dining experience.

The property is also a good value with loads of perks. It offers a number of extra features, at no extra costs or hidden fees: bicycles; all kinds of tennis, badminton and ping pong rackets, a basic set of golf clubs, hammocks, pétanque/bocce bowls, a huge book and DVD library, CDs, maps and guide books, a Finnish Sauna to relax after a busy day at chateau hopping, etc.

To facilitate your vacation planning, a comprehensive info. packet (in English) on things to do in the area, that includes the owner’s selection of local restaurants and wineries, will be given to you way before your arr

Guestbook comments from the owner

“We indeed had a nice visit to your home in France. We have in fact also recommended this to some friends that just moved to Paris if you in the future have availability for a long weekend. Also - Philippe was a great addition and extremely helpful ! Best regards.”

Enchanting cottage

  • 5 of 5

Staying at Ménagerie was such a lovely experience. The cottage is conveniently located in the heart of the Loire Valley making day trips to chateaux and vineyard explorations easy. Patrick Canel, the cottage owner was a true pleasure to work with. His very detailed booklet of information that he provides once the booking is complete is helpful for planning one's itenirary and the lovely bottle of sparkling wine that he leaves in the refrigerator allow easy relaxation into a wonderful cottage experience. The cottage itself is beautiful. Set in a quiet country location it is well equipped with everything you need including an outdoor dining space to enjoy the peacefulness of the countryside. My family has rented many homes on VRBO over the years and without a doubt this was one of the best. Be sure to go to the local Boulangerie that Patrick mentions....the availability of produce, cheese and bread is wonderful.

We will look forward to returning to La Ménagerie.

Just a wonderful place

  • 5 of 5

La Menagerie was everything we had hoped for and more. Comfortable, relaxing, completely outfitted for a great stay - and also perfectly situated to explore the best of the Loire Valley. All the little details are taken care of, and our three-generational group (six people in all) was very happy there. I would go back in a heartbeat. M. Canel provides a fabulous, in-depth guide in advance that helped us plan our adventures, so even that was taken care of. This was a very special family trip for us, and La Menagerie made it perfect.

Perfect combination of class, comfort, and location

  • 5 of 5

This is the second time we have rented this home, and we could see that M. Canel works continually to improve his property and ensure the ultimate lodging experience. This home is not sparse and sterile (like many rental properties). Rather, it is a family home with high-quality furnishings and equipment. From the copper pans to luxurious linens, from comfortable furniture to beautiful artwork, it offers all we needed for function, comfort, and beauty. If you like to read, this house is for you! There are books in several languages throughout the home on a variety of topics. No guidebooks needed, either--they're all here! The rural setting was perfect for privacy and peace. Our kids enjoyed the pool on warm afternoons, and we took walks through the country. There was more than enough room for our family of 5. Getting groceries was easy as the SuperU is just 10 minutes down the road in Contres. My entire family requested that on our next trip to France we stay here longer because we felt so at home here! We will definitely be back. . .

Very comfortable, clean and quiet

  • 4 of 5

Great place to stay while visiting the Loire castles. Lovely cottage with country style decoration. Beautiful fireplace. No problems with the hot water. The heating was simple to use and efficient. The Wi-Fi was perfect in the living room, a little more difficult in the bedrooms. We had a couple of fantastic BBQ for dinner. We got amazing weather so it was a pity the swimming pool wasn't available as well as sun lounges for sunbathing - but this was because we had the luck to have summer weather in early April! This house is perfect for 2 couples with children, enough space for everybody. We'll keep great memories of this trip!

Memories

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 6 just got back from the Loire Valley and Paris. If you are looking for a beautiful, comfortable and scenic place to stay please consider this. The cottage is beautiful and very comfortable for all of us with room to spare. We greatly enjoyed the fireplace for the chilly nights. Our girls aged 14 and 11 loved taking bike rides with the bikes that are provided. Philippe was there to greet us when we arrived and showed us around and explained everything in great detail. He was a great help when arriving and checking out. The cottage is very well located to explore all the chateau's the Loire Valley has to offer. Chambord, Chenonceau and Usse were our favorites. We are looking forward to coming back to the Loire Valley and would greatly recommend booking this cottage for your stay!

This cottage was perfect. It met all of our needs, was in a great location, well stocked with travel books and information as to what to do in the area. The cottage was very clean and had all the amenities one could ask for. It was close to groceries and easy access to get to the chateaus and wineries. Loved it!
