About this property
Farmhouse apartment in Contrada Lazzaretto, Ortona, Abruzzo, Italy
A recently converted ground-floor stable in a historic 18th-century farmhouse overlooking the sea amid vineyards and olive groves in a rural hamlet now becoming a holiday area because it is near the beach. The apartment has old wooden doors, traditional brick arches and vaulted ceilings, and has been carefully restored in a simple, rustic, open-plan style to respect the original structure of the building. The flat sleeps between 2 and 6 people: a bedroom with two single beds (separated from the living room by screens) and in the living room a sofa-bed and 2 armchair beds. The living room also has a large dining table and seating for 8. There is a big bathroom with washbasin, bath, shower, toilet and bidet; a small kitchen with sink, draining rack, gas hob, cooker hood, microwave oven and fridge-freezer; and a sheltered seating area outside, looking on to the back garden, with a barbecue (shared with the owners when present) and secure parking.
If you book, we will provide you with a comprehensive set of notes supplying information about the flat, our favourite local shops & a list of places we like to visit. On arrival you will find some essential food, mineral water & a bottle of wine so you don't have to go shopping immediately. If we are in residence, you can ask us for any help or advice you may need. When we are not there, a friend (whose phone number we will let you have) stands in for us.

About the host
Hosted by Robert and Monica Hastings
Robert and Monica are a retired couple. Robert was a Senior Lecturer in Italian Studies at the University of Manchester and Monica was a teacher of English at Withington Girls School. They bought their property in Abruzzo over 40 years ago. In their retirement they spend 3 or 4 months a year there, enjoying the beach, going for walks in the mountains, harvesting the olives, figs, cherries and plums in their garden and visiting places of interest in the surrounding region. Their property has been fully restored, and in addition to the ground-floor flat, converted from an old stable, they also let a converted barn at the bottom of the garden. That too can also be seen on this website.
Why they chose this property
The apartment is well appointed, recently restored and full of character. The beach is less than 5 minutes away by car, and you can be up in the high mountains in about three quarters of an hour. There is golf at Miglianico, just 4 miles away, and skiing in the winter 25 miles away at Passo Lanciano. Abruzzo has a wealth of unspoilt natural scenery, including 3 national parks and one regional park, picturesque hill-towns, castles, ancient abbeys and mountain hermitages, significant Roman remains and an excellent tradition of food and drink, based on natural local ingredients.
What makes this property unique
Conveniently placed for the beach and the mountains, with all necessary facilities (supermarkets, shops, banks, bars, restaurants, etc.) within easy reach, but sheltered and secluded at the same time, in a beautiful rural environment.
