About Kathie Mailander
We built Antler Hill in 2016. Antler Hill is a three-story retreat that sleeps 18. We have owned the sister lodge -- Buck Run Lodge -- for the past five years, and know what visitors expect in order to have a great trip. Families want to be together for a retreat to gather, but have enough space to call your own, and that's what we have built. Set among native oak trees, overlooking a private pond, with an additional 3,000 hardwood trees planted around the pond as part of a conservation project. Antler Hill is set amongst a wildlife haven.

Why Kathie Mailander chose Anita
We have owned this property for many years and after visiting other parts of the U.S., we decided this area of southern Iowa had a lot to offer for the traveler. From the scenery of the adjacent farm land to the wide open skies for viewing the stars at night, this is the type of property which is perfect for rest and relaxation with friends and family.
What makes this Lodge unique
You will enjoy original timber from a 35 foot tall tree inside the Lodge, a staircase cut from a single log, bedrooms lined with native walnut planking, pine slabs accenting the main room, 35 ft ceilings, fireplace of Virginia Bluestone, cherry wood from West Virginia, pine flooring from Virginia, walls of recycled shiplap, tin, cedar siding, pine from a South Carolina cotton mill, hand painted murals in 2 bedrooms of geese flying north and south, this is just part of the interesting points of interest in Antler Hill.

Family Reunion and 60th wedding anniversary celebration
My immediate family didn't stay overnight at the lodge but my sisters families did. We all spent most of our time there during the day. The kitchen area was well furnished. Crestwood Hills Golf Course is close so we had a family tournament. We loved sitting on the deck overlooking the beautiful pond. The grandsons loved exploring in the kayaks. The fire pit was a big hit too. One family member was heard commenting they couldn't believe they were in Iowa!
We are so happy you chose Antler Hill for your family to stay. while celebrating your 60th wedding anniversary. Glad your family took advantage of the amenities included with the rental, firepit, kayaks, fishing.
Beautiful scenery and plenty of room for our group (13 people)
Overall, great place to stay for a large group. Plenty of room (rooms and bedrooms) and the scenery was great to sit on the deck for entertaining. Kathie was very pleasant and easy to work with (we needed to check in early and leave later than normal due to flights/travel schedules). Some suggestions to consider is that the electrical can be tricky at times (we were warned by Kathie) even though we were careful not to plug in too many appliances within a room like the kitchen. Nonetheless, the circuit got tripped in the upstairs bathroom (we had to shower in the dark) and the kitchen (dishwasher). Everytime a circuit got tripped, we had to call Kathie since we didn't have access to the circuit breaker box. Finally, there is no laundry facility onsite. This wasn't in the listing, so if you read the listing carefully, it won't have it. We just missed that on the list and assumed there would be laundry facilities (so we started running out of clothes). Finally, it was a little difficult to find. There are no signs on the road (i.e. address of otherwise) and everyone of us got lost the first time trying to locate the lodge.
The driveway winds around the corner behind trees so the lodge isn't visible from the road. Even the locals who lived in the area had a difficult time locating the lodge.
Otherwise, a very pleasant experience.
Very spacious well designed building
Sleeps many couples comfortably. Owner was easy to work with. Will probably go there again.
We enjoyed having your group, they were considerate of the property, left the lodges very clean. Come again. Jim and Kathie
Great stay and ammenties
This place has the amenities of home, with a rustic and relaxing setting. We had plenty of room for our 16 guests and enjoyed the property so much. Also enjoyed a drink a Shooters Tavern downtown Anita. Would highly recommend.
Glad your experience at Antler Hill was great, we try our best to fulfill your needs, Jim and Kathie
A large lodge with a great view!
Overall, we had a pretty good stay at Antler Hill Lodge.
+ Amazing views over the pond and countryside of Iowa. The deck is great for watching sunrises
+ Everything we expected was provided: linens, towels, cookware (although limited), campfire and grill equipment
+ Large place with several bedrooms and many beds
+ A lot of the building was made of exposed wood
- Some of the beds were uncomfortable
- The circuit breakers for the electrical sockets in the fridge were tripped by the electric skillet provided (many times!). The kitchen electrical setup needs updated
- The owners were difficult to communicate with and not very accommodating when we needed help with the electrical issue
- Some of the furniture is dated.
Sorry you had issues with the state mandated new electrical systems. When too many appliances are plugged into one circuit line , the breaker will blow. My cell phone no. Is posted on the fridge for faster response than email.of the 13 beds, 11 are new memory foam, so sorry if you found them uncomfortable. We try our very best to make your stay comfortable for all ages of visitors, providing baby gates to handicap assessable main floor. Antler Hill Lodge
