About Shelley Benning

We are two families -- and always dreamed of having the perfect vacation villa together! We can't visit PV as often as we like because of school schedules and busy careers, but this villa is a sanctuary for our families -- a place for pure relaxation, laugher, and fun, where we build memories and share our passion for international travel with our kids.

Shelley Benning purchased this villa in 2006

Why Shelley Benning chose Puerto Vallarta

It's a VRBO love story – we saw pictures of the villa while surfing VRBO one night and thought 'that's it!' So we rented it and the amazing views of the ocean, the gorgeous white beach, lovely jungle mountains, and stunning colonial architecture with private pool had us sold -- a tropical paradise only 4 miles out of town. A few years later, when the villa came up for sale, we snapped it right up! It was one of those 'you know it when you see it' moments -- it is the most relaxing place for our families.

What makes this villa unique

You know -- at the villa it's the whole package, and the pictures are amazing, but don't do the place justice... it's so hard to capture the amazing view on camera. It's a lovely place with a great indoor - outdoor flow. The pool terrace's view is really stunning, it's hard to escape the view and private pool -- it's spectacular. The furnishings are carefully chosen from some of the best antique sources in Mexico. The tiles that decorate our kitchen and bathroom are custom, hand-painted. Our appliances are new and modern. Our beds are huge and comfortable, and we have invested in lovely linens to ensure a comfortable nights sleep. The maids, chef, etc. are so kind and really want to please - leaving fresh flower arrangements for the guests is just one of the nice things you can expect!

Guestbook comments from the owner

HI Shelley - We have been back in snowy Northern Ontario for a week now and are really missing the PV palm trees.

We certainly understand why you love your Garza Blanca Villa. It is truly beautiful. The view is spectacular and is an uplifting spectacle first thing in the morning, all during the sunny afternoons, and over wine in the evenings. The dipping pool is always a refreshing luxury. The Villa itself has wonderful architecture and a truly lovely collection of Mexican antiques and artifacts. It is private, spacious, airy, welcoming and well-appointed. We loved the location with its proximity to the jungle and mountains as well as to the assortment of local beaches.

We hope some day to return and certainly will recommend the location to friends travelling to Puerto Vallarta. Many thanks to you and to Elba and staff.

Beautiful property!

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at Villa dos Ángeles. The Villa is spacious, super clean and comfortable, pool is always clean as they check on it often. It has everything you need, what I especially loved is that there are plenty of fresh towels all the time - both bath and beach towels. We also asked the manager if the cleaning lady would be able to come and do dishes for us, since we didn't want to do dishes during our vacation... she charged a very small fee and left the kitchen sparkling!

A couple of things to consider: there is a busy road below the Villa, and there is traffic all day and for some time during the night, it gets pretty noisy at times. Also, you need to climb a lot of stairs to get to/from the house, so if you have difficulty it might be hard.

Great views and true Mexican architecture, but........

  • 4 of 5

We just returned from our stay at Villa Dos Angeles. Our family has been to PV many times but this was our first experience staying in a non-resort setting. While we had a GREAT vacation, there are a couple of things you should know prior to choosing this home.

1). The villa is located on the top of a hill. If you don't walk well, have knee problems, etc., don't choose this villa. If you walk in and out, there are a ton of stairs and cobblestone hills to go up. It is easier to climb up the steps from the bottom instead of going all of the way to the top and then down.

2). This Villa is not sealed up. If you don't like bugs, don't rent it. There are no-see-ums (vicious, biting almost invisible) all over the villa and the four of us were eaten up in our sleep. While we have encountered these before, mainly on the beach, we were not accustomed to having to wear bug repellent to bed at night! After waking up covered in red, itchy welts, we noticed that these bugs are everywhere. On the walls, the floors, the furniture, you name it. If you have small children, be aware that these bites are horrible and take weeks to go away.

3). There is a huge binder in the Villa that gives restaurant tips, etc. Some of it doesn't look to have been updated for quite sometime. One of the things that was sort of a bummer was that we were told that the beach at Garza Blanca had a poolside restaurant/bar that you could access while enjoying the beach. We grabbed towels, boogie boards and our wallet, only to find that the poolside restaurant is not available to anyone not staying at the resort. You can't even get a bottle of water! We did go back to the beach, however, hauling a cooler and everything else made it quite the production. Better to take a cab to town and enjoy one of the "beach clubs" at a local restaurant.

We really enjoyed the freedom that staying in the Villa provided. We truly enjoyed trying many of the local restaurants and the ability to cook for ourselves as well.

Owner's Response: We are grateful for this review - it allows us to provide more context about our villa for future guests! - Stairs and Cobblestones - there are plenty!! Our small enclave of villas is somewhat famous in PV for it's traditional coastal colonial architectural style, everything about it is intended to evoke a small coastal Mexican village -- and the homeowners association is quite strict about maintaining that rustic, colonial feeling. Much like the beautiful hillside villages in Italy, our villa is located directly on ridge of the Sierra Madre mountain range (hence the very huge views from our villa), and to move around the our neighborhood of villas requires taking stairs or cobblestone paths -- rather than sidewalks and paved roads. - Open architecture - yes! The architectural style is one that is very open - lots of terraces, large windows and glass doors that collapse to bring the outdoors in -- all designed to bring the individual into the jungle, and into the sky/sea views that surround the villa, etc. It's stunning - but it's definitely not like a hotel where you close the door, with climate control, sealed off from the outdoors. In all truth - we have never had an issue with no see'um's in our villa in the 9 years we have hosted guests. If the doors and windows are closed at night, and the fans are turned on, it's typically just fine to wonder about in PJ's and not worry about bug bites. BUT - whatever happened, it's not ok to hear about bugs - so we are sending the exterminator in once our current guests check out, so we can spray and make sure this issue does not arise again. - Binder and the Resort Next Door. Sadly it sounds like our local property manager's project to update the villa binder has not made much progress. We will have to edit and update the binder the next time we are down in PV. We do send lots of recommendations for grocery shopping, etc. to guests via email, but I will have to warn folks the binder has apparently seen better days since we last visited! Our villa is located next to the Garza Blanca Preserve - and we and our guests have never been turned away from the pool restaurant and bar until now -- I have called down to PV and the resort tells me that this was a one time occurrence, although they could not explain why it happened. The resort markets all its restaurants and its spa broadly to all tourists in Banderas Bay - and they tell me they still want that business. Thank you for the feedback, we are glad you visited!

Villa Dos Angeles Is Perfect

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at Villa Dos Angeles was perfect. The Villa has an unobstructed gorgeous 270 view of The Bay of Banderas and a wonderful, very private, pool. We really enjoyed our time here. We woke in the morning, made coffee and breakfast in the fully stocked kitchen, and watched the morning news until it was pool time. Satellite TV allows access to good entertainment and the DSL worked perfect. We spent most days laying by the pool although, Garza Blanca beach is just across the road. The Villa is about a 5-10 minute cab ride to the Romantic Zone where there are plenty of shops and restaurants, although if you want to do your own cooking the kitchen is perfect. You can hire a chef if you like, and the price is very reasonable, and the property manager can every arrange grocery shopping for you (for a reasonable fee). There is AC in all bedrooms and in the main living area, which is perfect for hot summer day. My wife and I really enjoyed our stay and Villa Dos Angeles is at the top of my list for any return stay Puerto Vallarta.

Incredible

  • 5 of 5

My family and I (kids 6 and 8) just spent the weekend here, and it exceeded all expectations. The view is outrageous, the pool is perfect (couldn't get the kids out), the house is perfectly furnished and has everything we needed. We watched the sun set into the Pacific while drinking margaritas and watching our girls play in the pool. Your casa is a gem!!!

Owner's Response: We are so pleased you enjoyed the villa! We love it so, and can't spend as much time there as we would like -- so when our guests have a great time, it shines real sunshine on our lives back here in the US. Please come again soon!! Shelley

Beautiful Place

  • 4 of 5

We went to Villa Dos Angeles for our honeymoon (mid-June 2010). The area is outside of downtown PV, but in a quiet, safe area with beautiful views of the ocean and the city. I got some beautiful pictures of the area from the patio. The community of villas has a security/maintenance person on site, too, which is helpful.

The house is charming, with a great layout and plenty of space. The kitchen area is nice and with the satellite TV, DVDs, and other amenities it was a relaxing place to spend a vacation. The pool was an amazing touch and we spent a lot of time in there swimming and looking out on the ocean. Truly, we didn't want to leave much except to do day excursions.

The location is great because it's really right across the street from a local beach. You will need a car or to take cabs because there's not a whole lot in the immediate surrounding area, but there is a convenience store nearby for snacks/soda/etc. The option to have someone and cook a meal for you was a great touch too - really helped make it a great experience.

Unfortunately, during rainy season moth-like bugs called palomillas awaken from hibernation. This coincided with our visit and because the windows and doors to the patio were left open after cleaning (this is common in Latin America), lots of these bugs flew in and all over the house while we were gone. Thankfully the maintenance person on staff helped us to deal with the immediate problem, but over the next few days geckos came in to eat the bugs and crawl up the walls. I've spent a lot of time in Latin America so I've learned to prepare for the unexpected, but all of this was a little much for my wife and we ended up spending the last few days at a hotel. If it wasn't our honeymoon we probably would have stuck it out and been more proactive about trying to work to get things resolved, but we didn't want to have the stress of dealing with the situation. If going during beginning of rainy season I would highly recommend travel insurance since, as we found out the hard way, the rental contract protects the owner from having to reimburse "unforeseen events". The owners did offer to give us two free nights if we return, which was a nice gesture that we appreciated.

Overall though, beautiful property away from "mainstream" PV that makes for a great retreat. You can stay in the all-inclusive hotels in town and get the same experience as other places, but the villa is much more memorable.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind review! I remember your visit in 2010 well! This is probably a good place to explain that the south end of Puerto Vallarta is located in a mountainous jungle! Like the north side of Kauai, or other spots - it's beautiful and wild! Gekos, turtles, iguanas, are all a part of the south shore scene. In Puerto Vallarta when the weather changes from the dry season to the rainy season, the very first rains bring the palomillas - they come quickly and leave just as quickly, but they are common in the tropics! In recent years our gardening staff has taken a fairly aggressive stance on spraying right before the rains come, in the last few years they have not been particularly noticeable. Gekos are considered lucky in PV (you can find painted folk art gekos everywhere in town) because they eat bugs. Year round, you will find them in villas, restaurants, hospitals, you name it! They are a part of the scenery in PV -- and we love them because they do eat the bugs, and they are pretty cute. Puerto Vallarta is a really pretty place to visit, the people are friendly, and the food is delicious! So bring your shorts and sandals and be ready to experience a tropical vacation!
