Loved Casa Nella Selva
What a wonderful experience! When we booked this house, we had very high expectations and we got more than we hoped for. This house is nestled on a hillside looking east-northeast over the village of Borgo a Mazzano and there was literally nothing we needed that wasn’t there. Martha obviously took a lot of time and attention to seeing after that. The house was comfortable and clean and incredibly spacious. The views are spectacular, especially in the morning when the hillside is draped in sunshine, and you can see the majestic Appennines to the north. The kitchen and dining room are spacious but you will be spending most of your time on the outdoor earthen terrace overlooking the valley, Borgo and the Serchio River. They also have an outdoor pizza oven, which we used twice in an 8 night stay to grill chicken and steak and, of course, make pizza. They stocked plenty of firewood. The grounds around the house, and the whole hillside, are filled with olive trees and the occasional chestnut tree. Although it takes about 10-15 minutes to drive to Borgo, it also takes less than 10 to walk there, mainly because it is a short hike down the hillside and a longer route around the ridge to drive down. Borgo is not a tourist town (thankfully) and it has all of the amenities that the local residents insist on. Central among shops you will need is Penny’s market which will have all of the groceries that you don’t pick up at the smaller shops in town. We are hikers and on our first day hiking the area we stumbled on the Devils Bridge, an iconic, many centuries old bridge over the Serchio that you’ve seen in pictures. It was well worth the short walk to the far end of town. We hiked from the house to Cune, Oneta, Borgo and back to the house, a good workout loop of about 10 miles and sufficient to work up a good appetite. We took day trips to the Garfagnana to the north and west and notably the towns of Barga and Castlenuovo di Garfagnana—if you are looking for towns, and countless hikes otherwise. The house is literally on the Gothic Line, the line of occupation by the Germans (to the north) during WWII. There is a small museum in town with artifacts. The house, no doubt saw a lot during those years. Even if you don’t hike, take a short walk to the south and west from the house and you will see the Serchio River Valley, Diecimo and an industrial corridor along the river.
Loved every minute. Don’t miss this spectacular location and home!!!
