About this property

Charming period cottage quietly located in the centre of Winchester

Charming period cottage quietly situated in one on Winchester's quaint old streets.

This renovated cottage still retains the old features which give it plenty of character - old fireplaces and doors and twisty old staircase.

It is ideally situated in the city centre, so all the historic sites, the world class restaurants, bars, live theatre and markets are a very short stroll, there are also many delightful walking and cycling trails along the river and up onto the famous South Downs.

This cottage makes a very homely and comfortable base to come back to after a day out exploring or at work, and the beautifully fitted out kitchen/dining room invites you to enjoy a take away or home cooked meal.

During the summer months you can enjoy the garden with its terrace for al-fresco dining or relaxing, this is accessed by a flight of quite steep steps which are unsuitable for those with restricted mobility and small children should be supervised when playing on them.

The cottage is a terraced cottage, typical of the Victorian old houses in many cities in England, this means it has other houses attached on each side of it, the area directly outside the back door is a yard half of which belongs to this cottage and half to the neighbouring cottage, there is a steep flight of stairs which is also shared with the next door house leading to another terrace which is for the exclusive use of guests in our cottage, each cottage has its own terraced garden.

The cottage is located in a quiet pretty old street which is part of a conservation area, as such we are unable to change the old windows, so they are single glazed and in the winter months are likely to have some condensation on the inside, but we provide attractive plantation shutters which improve the heat insulation at the front of the house - the windows at the back are all double glazed..

Unpleasant stay
Very unpleasant experience for the 10 days I stayed in the house. The furniture in the house is very dilapidated and the outdoor furniture was broken and usuable when I arrived. In addition, on one day there was a gabbage came out in the courtyard which I suppose is private. Upon enquiry, the host told me that it was shared with another house. Subsequently, the information shown on the website was amended accordingly. The host is not very friendly at all.

Very nice property centrally located in Winchester
Really enjoyed our stay - the cottage is very nice and really couldn't be closer to the centre for access to historic sites (cathedral, college etc) and shops. Also convenient for walks out along the river and up St Catherine's Hill for great views. Good kitchen facilities etc within the property. Host was helpful as and when needed.

Great cottage in fab location
This is a lovely, comfortable and clean cottage. Ideal location for exploring Winchester on foot. The photo of the rear steps is accurate but guests should note that access from the front of the property is easy with only one small step up to the front door so don’t be put off. Parking permit provided. Caroline was easy to communicate with. An all round enjoyable stay.

Easy booking and check-in process. Owner very responsive to queries. Great base in Winchester, easy walking distance into the town centre and well located for river walks and play grounds. Parking permit provided so easy if driving to the cottage and also for doing day trips.

Perfect for a short break
A lovely cottage in a great location. The cottage is very well equipped with everything needed for a comfortable stay . The milk, biscuits and Prosecco were unexpected and very welcome ! Provision of a visitor parking permit meant we could park easily in the street.

Lovely, well-equipped cottage in a perfect location.
Excellent stay, except for two errors in the online listing, which did not realy effect us: The facilities list a washer and drier - it's only a washer; also listed is satellite or cable - there is only FreeView. Minor points, but the listing should be amended.

Great location, clean, comfortable & homely
It suited us (two adults and a toddler) perfectly for a 6 night stay in Winchester. Nice big kitchen-diner. Lovely quiet road, very close to town centre, short walks, playgrounds etc. Always found there was space to park outside the property, using the parking permit provided.

5-day pleasant stay in St John.
We had a 5-day pleasant stay in this cottage second week of December. All equipment worked and we easily could set the temperature to our conveniance. Sitting and sleeping were all very relaxing. The location so near the centre, but in a quiet lane is very nice. The only negative remark to be made is that there are two nails sticking out in the carpet of the staircase. Walking bare foot was an unpleasant surprise. I am sure that this inconveniance will be removed quickly.

Unbeatable Location
Pilgrim's Way cottage is on a quiet street in the middle of Winchester, a couple of minutes' walk to shops, restaurants and the attractions of the city centre. The cottage itself was spotlessly clean and cozy, with a very well appointed kitchen. The owner was readily available to answer any questions and the deposit was promptly returned after checkout.

Clean and well located house
The house is very well located and was clean and well stocked. While small it worked well for our children. even though the house is so close to town the street was very quiet and parking was readily available. Overall it was a great house.

Perfect for our stay
We contacted Caroline very last minute for our stay and she was most accommodating and flexible. The property is located perfectly for Winchester, far enough from any noise at night but close enough to walk less than 5 minutes to the city centre. The cottage itself is beautifully presented, everything works as it should and you feel very at home very quickly. I would definitely recommend to others.

Really charming and nice cottage.
The cottage was well-maintained and nicely furnished.I liked specially that from this charming house, it was neither far to Winchester High Street, nor for a walk at the river Itchen. Cathedral, Guild Hall, Winchester Mill are all easy to reach. And on my way back from town, I loved to stop at 'The Bridge Patisserie' for a wonderful fruit tarte.

Lovely days in a lovely house
We had really lovely days in the house in St. Johnson Street. Everything was perfekt. The house is attractively decorated and very clean. The best is the big kitchen with all you need to prepare meals. On a large table, you can sit together and eat. The house is located in a quiet side street, close to the city core, so it easy to buy the things you need. We will be happy to recommend this house again.

A good choice
The house was well presented & as per the published description. It was in a very good location with a very easy walk into the city & attractions. The outside sitting area was good, although as stated by the owner, the steps were steep but manageable & I am in my eighties. The outside table has seen better days. Inside was OK, again the stairs were steep but manageable. An enjoyable place to stay.

An English Christmas
We spent two weeks at the Pilgrims Way cottage. It was clean, comfortable and within 7-8 minutes walk to High Street and the Cathedral. The kitchen was fully furnished and we cooked several meals for 7 people there. The beds were comfortable and the shower worked perfectly. We spent time with our son and his family who live in Winchester and it was a special time of year. The Christmas market and the activities at the Cathedral were an added treat. We will definitely consider booking this cottage for future visits.
