About this property
Level, Direct Lakefront, Expansive Western Views, Beach On Candlewood Lake
DO NOT SEND A BOOKING REQUEST! SEND AN INQUIRY FIRST! IF YOU SEND A BOOKING REQUEST FIRST, AND WE DO NOT AGREE ON THE BOOKING, YOU WILL HAVE TO CALL VRBO TO CANCEL.
ALSO, WE ARE ONLY ACCEPTING 2 WEEK RENTALS FOR THE 2026 HIGH SEASON (MID-JUNE THROUGH MID-SEPTEMBER). We have availability from 7/6-7/24 and 8/8 through the end of the summer.
Our precious home is a direct waterfront, 5 bedroom property with expansive, western views of Candlewood Lake. Candlewood Lake is Connecticut's largest lake, spanning 11 miles and covering 5420 acres. Only 70 miles to NYC, there is no better large lake this close to the tri-state area. Large backyard with boat dock and at least 25 yards of your own sandy beach. Private large boat dock- bring your own boat or rent one. The boat ramp is 10 minutes away. New beds, furnishing and floors. Furnished screen house. 3 full baths. Outdoor fire pit in summer (indoor wood-burning fireplace in winter). Garage and parking up to 6 cars. Top-of-the-line Oled TVs with Sonos system. Highly rated Casper and Avocado Green mattresses and pillows!
There is a gentle, indiscernible slope to lake from the downstairs level. The backyard is near-level, as opposed to the vast majority of rentals on this lake that require multiple stairs to get to the lake. The flat grade is perfect for both the very young and older guests, as well as the ability for outdoor games/activities.
We have updated our home in the spring of 2022, and we have updated the backyard landscaping in 2024.
Three-night rentals will be considered only on a case by case basis and not in the high seasons.
Price varies based on weekend/weekday, holidays, and season.
Getting here is best by car. However, Uber/taxi from Danbury MetroNorth station (18minute drive) costs about 20 dollars. Brewster and Southeast are the closest MetroNorth stops on the Harlem line, about 20 minutes away and about 20 dollars. The Harlem line is always a direct train out of grand central station in Manhattan. The Danbury line is either direct (during return rush hour, for example) or requires one transfer, in South Norfolk.
The house uses a septic tank system, so significant water usage and long showers are discouraged.
Please note that although we no longer accept instant booking, and you would have to fill out a template questionnaire regarding out house rules before we accept the reservation. For example, we need to know the exact number and ages of the guests, strict enforcement of noise rules, absolutely no parties or events, limited water usage due to septic capacity concerns, and clear communication about number of day guests, which have to be limited. We have the right to cancel if we are not satisfied with any of your answers.

Amazing family lake vacation. Kim and Chris were incredibly thorough and always responsive. House was exactly as listed and a truly awesome property on the lake.
As always, it's a pleasure to stay at this property. The location is perfect, the lake is beautiful and the house is well-appointed for hosting our family reunion each year. Chris is easy to reach and a great communicator. Checking in is seamless as well.
We had a great weekend. The house was perfect for our group and we had a gorgeous weekend. We spent our afternoons on the private beach and enjoyedthe view. One afternoon we went to a vineyard - easy to get to. We also enjoyed long walks in the neighborhood. I appreciated how quickly the owners responded to my text messages. Thank you.
The beach with shallow lake to wade/swim in is perfect for kids who are new swimmers/not yet swimmers. Gorgeous property. Owners very responsive. Would definitely book again next year
The view from the main room is just amazing. Even in November we were able to use the kayaks. Lots of great hikes in the area. The house was clean and very spacious.

Thank you Sara! The view is our favorite part of the house. Your group were great guests and are always welcome back.
The house is perfect for families with young children! Doesn't get any better than direct lake access and a small beach. The perfect view for 4th of July fireworks. Did not want to leave !

Glad you enjoyed 7/4 on the lake. We look forward to hosting you again next year!
The home was exactly as advertised. My family felt very comfortable and enjoyed our brief stay. The lakeside location and views were exquisite. Kim and Chris were very easy to work with, communicate with and very accommodating to our schedule. I would highly recommend their home to others.
The house was roomy and modern, and located at the heart of the lake. We had an excellent view of all the July 4th fireworks. We enjoyed that it was very near the Echo Marina from which we rented a boat just about everyday. We also enjoyed that we were able to walk 2 plus miles each day on flat and quiet streets.

Thanks John! Your family is welcome back. We love walking the neighborhood as well!
Chris and Amy were terrific hosts, very responsive and attentive! Everything was just as advertised or better! The lake access was fantastic and everything inside was better than one could hope for! Good light, good air, great/comfy beds.
We appreciated their accommodation for our family to stay together. Would love to do it again and again and again!!!

Thank you for the kind words! You and your family are welcome back.
We just returned from our Candlewood Lake vacation and couldn’t be happier. We fell in love with the lake and were very happy with our stay at this property. We enjoyed swimming, kayaking and paddle boarding. Fishing off the dock provided hours of entertainment for our 11 year old son and his friend.
The house was perfectly located, had everything we needed and was very comfortable for our party of 6 adults and 2 boys. Kim and Chris were great hosts, very responsive and remained in contact throughout our stay.

THX Connie. Your family were amaizing guests. Yes, Candlewood Lake is nationally known for great bass fishing, and our home is lucky enough to be near a great fishing spot. We hope you come back.
Kim and Chris were wonderful hosts - very responsive and proactive with communication.
It is hard to beat how beautiful Candlewood Lake is in the summer and this house is a great family base. Plenty of room for all of us to spread out, and kids loved the bunk beds! I loved the expansive views off the living room, screened-in porch and master. Neighborhood was great for morning strolls, and quiet at night. Getting out on the water in the kayak and on the paddle board was awesome, right off the beach! Thank you for the great stay!

Thank you Karen! We are glad you enjoyed your stay.
We had a wonderful week here! After renting four times on Candlewood Lake, we finally found a house that checks all the boxes for us and our two adult children and their partners (and our priciest to date): 3 comfortable King/Queen beds (and more for guests), 3 full bathrooms, spacious kitchen and common areas. Screened in porch was delightful as was the comfy waterfront furniture under the shaded tree, dock, kayaks and small sandy beach water access. The flat yard is rare on Candlewood and a plus for our elderly parents who came to visit. Central location on the lake was helpful despite the heavy boat traffic on the weekends. Location is ideal for shopping and dining. Only drawback was the septic, a minor annoyance in an otherwise finally appointed home.

Thanks for the review and we hope to welcome your group back!
We are glad this property checked all the boxes for you!
For future renters, just 2 minor points, we have actually 1 king and three queen beds, as well as several twin beds.
As for the septic, thanks for limiting your water usage given the small tank size. We are hopeful sewer is coming soon to the Shores!
Our family of 5 and our nanny rented this house for a few weeks this summer. From start to finish, everything was wonderful. We were in communication with the owners, they are kind and responsive and helpful, very nice people. We met the next door neighbor who were very nice as well. We really enjoyed our time at Candlewood, the beach is beautiful and our kids enjoyed swimming and playing in the sand. We fished off the dock with the kids. We had 5 adults and 3 kids and the house fit us very comfortably and everyone had their own room to sleep. The community is beautiful, people are nice and fun and the community beach is clean. We had an amazing time and would love to be back! Thanks for being so kind and making us feel like we were home.

Thanks so much for the kind words! You and your family are welcome back!
On the positive side, this house is in a great location, great neighborhood, nice level manicured yard leading to the water and the dock. Plenty of space for the family, both inside and outside. Fantastic sunsets. The owner was great. Very responsive, helpful and generous. On the negative side, this house needs updating and has a poorly functioning septic system that can back up into the shower. The owner asked us to minimize flushing toilets (if it’s yellow, let it mellow), or taking too many showers, or running the washing machine. Understandable, but not what you want to deal with on your vacation. Also know that the kitchen is not a cooks kitchen. Missing many basics. Mismatched and inadequate dishes, silverware, cups, cookware, etc. Think college house set up. Very much a rental!Personally, I would buy this house if it ever came on the market, but would immediately spend the money to upgrade it.

Thanks for highlighting the strategies that we insist on potential guests (especially with larger groups) to decrease the risk of having a septic problem. Partially due to these strategies, we have not had any issue since we first bought the house in 2019 (we bought it in 2018).
Before we even consider having guest in our home, we make sure the possible guests are ok with these (and we ask to specifically acknowledge this BEFORE we agree to allow you in our home and do not allow automatic bookings). If the guests are not used to a septic tank, want more of a spa-like vacation and want unrestricted house water usage, we are not a good fit. This is clearly stated in our description and in all email discussions we have. Every house on the lake using a septic; some may not stress it as much as we do. We mention it our emails, not verbally, unless potential guests have questions or concerns.
Other points about the septic:
-"updating" is not possible. Our level house borders the lake property, which is owned by a federal electric company, and therefore the septic fields can not be expanded, even if we went through the red tape involved. We have been down this path already (as has the previous owner- who we are still friends with).
- Sewer is very much on the way, which would eliminate this problem. Once there is a sewer system, the only updating the house would need is a hot tub, sauna, and cold plunge. Until then, reasonable water restriction is necessary.
-Along this same reasoning, we need potential guest to be completely upfront about potential day-guests, especially if the group is travelling locally.
As for the kitchen, we have a full set of dinnerware to cover the allowed guests in our home. Some mismatched glasses, etc, are alumni things or otherwise things that are sentimental to us, and we are not getting rid of. Otherwise- guests have a full fridge, a separate smaller fridge, deep freezer, double oven, microwave, electric stove/oven, many coolers, coffee maker, seperate Keurig, soda machine, drinking water dispenser, air fryer, 4 burner Weber bbq and more. If something is missing or can not be found, we happily remmburse via Zelle, for most if not all necessary items. We are always open to suggestions about what may be missing.
As for this house going on the selling market, this is a very frequent and most common question guest have once they see and spend time in the house. My 10-yo says to check back in about 70 years, but the appreciation will be significant!
What a fantastic week! This house is beautiful. It was so clean and comfortable with many amenities. Lots of space with comfortable bedroom options. As you walk into the home, the open concept and amazing views from to the lake is breathe taking. We so enjoyed the screen in porch too.
The views were spectacular, and the water is so clean right off the private beach and excellent dock.
We enjoyed many days playing and relaxing at the beautiful lake. We all swam the entire week. The waterfront and excellent dock make it fun jumping off and floating with tubes and noodles. We kayaked around the lake daily, the firepit provided campfire for making smores!
Our family really enjoyed the back yard. It was easy to play frisbee and allow us to easily wheel my 93-year-old mother down to the lake. With beautiful trees for her to have shade and enjoy the days with us.
I highly recommend this home for a family vacations, as there is plenty of room for everyone. Lastly, the owners are a pleasure to work with and is an outstanding communicator.

Thank you for the great review. You are more than welcome to come back!
We are a family of five that just totally loved our week at this home. Terrific location, beautiful home and wonderful owners. Hope to be back again for sure.
This is an absolutely beautiful place. The sunset aligns with the large living room window and the lake. It was such a peaceful and restful getaway from the city, also very safe and quiet. There is a lot of great hiking in the area for all levels. The communication with the owners was straightforward and easy. We said good-bye to 2020 in this wonderful house on the lake and in nature watching the birds. It was perfect.

Thank you for the nice compliments! Your group was great and you are welcome back.
There are a variety of hikes as close as 10 minutes from the house, and many more within 30 minutes from the house. We are relatively new to the area and are learning about the extensive hiking in the area.
Thanks again and have a healthy new year!
The panoramic view of the lake from the living room is a spectacular first impression. And every night we enjoyed family games there. The bunk beds were a big hit, and the dock is so easy to launch from. A level yard, not always the case at Candlewood, made outdoor activities possible.

Thank you! The flat backyard, and that view from the living room, is what we fell in love when we bought the house. The bunk bed room setup was encouraged by our young daughter. You are welcome back next year!
I use to be an ocean person my whole life but This place changed me. Wonderful house and location. Rented boats and pulled them up to the house. Went kayaking, relaxed in the sun and ate great food. The owners we super helpful and we definitely want to return.

Thank you Wiley! You are a great guest and are more than welcome back!
We stayed here for Thanksgiving with our family and a friends family. We were 4 adults and 4 kids and it slept us all very comfortably. We probably could have slept 4 more kids comfortably.
We also exercised the kitchen heavily - it has two ovens and a good layout. And the living room upstairs has a great couch for conversation or watching the big screen.
The views of the lake in mid-afternoon are phenomenal.
Great location on the lake. Rented a boat for tubing & skiing. Second time for this house. Memories made for me with my kids/grandkids. I had owned a house down the block! Familiar territory!
