We loved staying in this beautiful, well appointed home! The view onto the Tomales Bay, especially from the window seat in the dining area was lovely. With comfortable beds, the two private bedrooms and loft were perfect. It’s under a 30 minute walk into the most charming town of Point Reyes Station and under 2 hour drive from San Francisco along the scenic coast highway. We plan on staying again next time we visit this coast!

Egret Overlook Weekend

Had a(nother) delightful stay at this lovely home overlooking Tomales Bay. Very private, great for two couples (or three if one is willing to be in the upstairs loft which is semi-open to the great room below).A solid wall of windows overlooking the bay with a wrap-around deck makes for an incredibly relaxing stay of gazing out at the waterbirds throughout the day. Convenient to town while very private. Easy access to Bear Valley Visitor center at Pt Reyes or up the Bay to Marshall and oyster feasts. Really enjoyed our stay and will be back!

Great location

We enjoyed our stay and would rent this again. The property listing could be improved by clarifying that the "hot tub" listed in amenities is a jacuzzi indoor bathtub and not what we usually think of as a "hot tub" where several people can sit, converse and enjoy a drink.

A perfect retreat

The view off the deck is nothing short of spectacular. If you love birds, this is the place for you! The house is quaint but well equipped (kitchen, linens, library, etc). It's a 5-minute drive from Pt Reyes town, which has an amazing bakery and plenty of restaurants.

Special trip to celebrate my 60th birthday

We love visiting Point Reyes. The neighborhood that this short term rental is located in is quiet and peaceful. The view of the preserve allowed us to see various bird activity, the changing of the tides, sunrises, and open space. The views could be seen throughout the house The bed in the primary bedroom was exceptionally comfortable. We will definitely return.

Breathtaking view in peaceful location

My friend and I had a very relaxing few days in this beautiful home. We love to hike and its proximity to so many hiking trails in the Pt. Reyes National Seashore was a big plus. The configuration of the house was perfect with each bedroom on an opposite side of the house, with its own bathroom. Each bedroom has sliding doors onto the deck and the same fabulous view you can see from the entire house. The kitchen was well appointed, the bed was comfortable, and the art and furnishings were a very nice addition. Patty was very responsive and made the entire process easy. We highly recommend this house!

Tomales Bay overview

I very much liked the overview of the Bay, enshrouded in the mornings with fog that was gradually penetrated by the early sun. Great photographically! But the house was ho-hum. Beds were marginally comfortable; some in our group were worried about the morning light; ants took over the kitchen and the southern bedroom on the final morning; the northern bathroom was very hazardous in getting into and out of the tub/shower. Our consensus was not to rent here again.

If you aren’t interested in birds, you will be when you leave

My group stayed in late May 2024, Point Reyes was colder than I expected and we weren’t prepared for the cool winds coming off the ocean—be prepared for cool days or nights. We spent hours on the deck watching the bird species change with the tide. The Merlin bird app helps identify birds using their vocalizations, since we aren’t birders, we relied on it heavily. The interior is as lovely as the photographs. We were very comfortable sipping tea or wine on the window bench and enjoying the view of the wetlands when it was too cool for the deck. The kitchen was fully stocked with every gadget we needed, such a relief! Thank you, Patty, for sharing your home. You made our annual ladies Memorial Day weekend a special one.

Stunning views of the wetlands. The wildlife is so beautiful and plentiful. This home is truly about the views. The house itself is comfortable, but in need of a bit of TLC. The music collection had us reminiscing about our youth! Such a fantastic collection!!! This was the first vrbo we have stayed in that didn't have any condiments in the refrigerator or foil, saran wrap or zip locks. The BBQ is an old Weber that should be replaced with Gas to cut down on fire from hot sparks. ( Just a thought). Again, we would stay here again for the views and the music!

Beautiful View, But Home is Dirty and Poorly MaintainedWe paid 550 per night expecting a peaceful, comfortable retreat with great views. The view was indeed lovely — but nearly everything else about the stay was disappointing and far below what we expected for this price. The home was not clean when we arrived. Pots, pans, and dishes were greasy; several pans were chipped and flaking; and the refrigerator bins were grimy. We found hairs in multiple places, dead bugs on the floor, and mold around the windows and master bedroom door. The laundry room floor was filthy, and dust and cobwebs covered the ceilings. A guest with allergies was affected by the mold.Other issues included soft mattresses, blinds in the second bedroom that didn’t open, and mosquitoes inside the house despite the screen door being closed. The no-shoe policy and the presence of a tenant next door were not disclosed before booking. Basic supplies like detergent, foil, or food storage containers were missing. While we enjoyed seeing wildlife in the yard, the frog in the shower summed up the home’s condition — poorly sealed and neglected. For 550 a night, this property needs a deep clean, replacement of worn items, and more attention to maintenance. The view is wonderful, but until the home is properly cared for, I can’t recommend it.

About the host

Hosted by Patty Glatt

Host profile image
Patty bought the property in Point Reyes in 1989. She felt like the luckiest person in the world. While working two jobs she spent late nights imagining her 'dream house'. She had never designed anything. After two years of reading about design, principles of kitchen flow, Japanese gardening, and energy efficiency, she presented her plans to a local designer-builder. The home was completed in 1992. The Southwest orientation maximizes views and solar passive energy. The street side remains private with few windows. Two large bedroom suites placed at opposite wings of the home optimizes the view and privacy for all occupants. The central common area is unifying. The open kitchen can accommodate many working simultaneously. The loft is a great place to get away for a nap. As Patty's nephew uses a wheelchair, she designed the doorways and halls wide and the second bathroom is handicap friendly. The master bath indoor-outdoor design pulls you into the garden. Its wrap-around deck overlooks the wetlands facing westward towards the sunset and Inverness ridge. Most visitors spend their time there relaxing, barbecuing as the sun sets, and watching the carpet of stars as the Milky Way sweeps overhead.

Why they chose this property

Point Reyes is located approximately 22 miles north of San Francisco, in West Marin. Close enough to drive out to for the day, yet remote and authentically rural.
When I moved to Point Reyes in 1987 to practice Family Medicine, I loved that it had postal boxes where neighbors gathered. I still love how all you need can be found within 4 blocks.

What makes this property unique

Located on the Point Reyes Mesa across from Inverness Park. Stroll within a private neighborhood, passing a small pond, Cypress groves, and daffodils. We are located one scenic mile north beyond the town of Point Reyes. After 30 years of hosting families, we are now an adult only no-pet home to reduce the wear and tear on the property.
You will find our home and neighborhood restorative. A favorite day starts with a morning cup of rich coffee and sticky morning buns from the Bovine Bakery, browsing at the Point Reyes Books independent bookstore, and catching the local farmers market in the Summer and Fall at Toby's Feed Barn. Purchase local cheeses at the local Palace market, breads, scones, tarts at the Brickmaiden bakery and the Bovine bakery, and head out to a local meadery or winery. Or prepare your lunch in our well stocked kitchen before heading out to the Point Reyes National Seashore Headquarters for a full day's hike. The Point Reyes National Seashore contains unique elements of biological and historical interest in a spectacularly scenic panorama of thunderous ocean breakers, open grasslands, bushy hillsides and forested ridges. Drive out to the Lighthouse stopping along the landscape characterized by spectacular shorelines, dairy farms and over 65,000 acres of wilderness protected by the Point Reyes National Seashore. Head home stopping for fresh mussels and oysters from local shellfish Hog Island farms to grill on the barbecue, or select from fine or casual dining options.
