Come to the Blue Ridge Mountains and refresh your spirit! Our vintage farmhouse is in the heart of Virginia’s wine country, minutes from vineyards, breweries and wedding venues. Enjoy our local wines on the back deck watching spectacular sunsets and wait for the stars to light up the sky. Walk to the Appalachian Trail from the Bear’s Den trailhead one mile away. Play in the Shenandoah River a few minutes away. Middleburg, Purcellville, Leesburg and Civil War sites nearby. As you travel up the mountain on our Scenic Virginia Byway, you start to see the stacked stone walls from the Revolutionary War era. You’ve entered the Bear’s Den Historic District, 1900’s era homes built as summer retreats for Washingtonians escaping the summer heat. The Bluemont train carried them out of the city where they were met at the station by horse drawn wagons to take them up the mountain. Bishop’s Gate was built in 1910 as the parsonage for the bishop who ran the neighboring church. The charming cottage was restored in 2018 by the owners who live on the adjacent property. The house is thoroughly updated while staying true to its original form. Original heart pine floors, bead board walls and original furnishings offer lots of charm. All kitchen supplies (including coffee for the Keurig coffeemaker) are included. Online work or school with reliable internet. Games, puzzles, books and a record player are available. The screened porch, complete with porch swing and rockers, is surrounded by mature boxwoods- perfect nesting sites for the songbirds that welcome you. Under the bistro lights on the back deck, a table for outside dining seats six and Adirondack chairs overlook the fire pit and barn. The rope swing in the 200 year old tulip poplar tree delights all ages. We are situated on 20 wooded acres perfect for getting kids in touch with nature and off screens! S’mores supplies provided for the outdoor fire pit and all firewood is provided. Charcoal for the grill is also provided. Winter weather advisory: weather on the mountain is very unpredictable, you will need 4 wheel drive or chains. The driveway is 400 feet down the mountain and ice makes it very difficult driving.

This property is located out of the way, but also near enough to a lot of the areas you likely want to visit if you're staying in Northern Virginia. It was quiet, and the sense of history from the decor and background of the property is inspiring.

Cristopher and Christina were wonderful guests. They were very flexible when a sudden cold snap left us without heat. We’re happy they will be moving to the area!
Thoughtfully kept historic home, decor was very cool, owner left s’mores ingredients for the fire pit. House was clean, extra towels provided. Our family loved our stay and would happily return.
Thank you to Marcia for an amazing stay with beautiful scenery and interesting history!
We had everything we needed and more!

A quaint property with old world charm lovingly restored by the owner. Perfect for a weekend with an event at nearby vineyards.

Anita and Luann were perfect guests. They communicated well with me, left the house in perfect condition and seemed to enjoy our cottage. We’d love to have them again!
Marcia and Bill were fantastic hosts. The house is as described and more! Was surprised by the numerous activities in close proximity. Would definitely stay again.

We were so happy to host your reunion, Matt. We’re looking forward to Mike’s getaway weekend with his wife when they get that planned.
My friends and I were looking for a charming home to enjoy a relaxing, stress-free weekend—and we couldn't have come across a better home than this one! The hosts were incredibly helpful and responsive, and even arranged to have the wood stove in the living room going when we arrived. Can't recommend this cozy home enough!

Zak and his friends were wonderful guests. We were so happy to see that they enjoyed the firepit when the weather cleared, and the wood stove on their arrival. These are the kind of guests who make us happy that we keep the house available to rent. Hope they’ll return next Fall!
Beth and I are in Philly now, but both wish we were still in Marcia and Bill’s lovely cottage. The location is a perfect tonic for anyone wanting a peaceful refuge in the woods. The cottage is clean and well-equipped, and our nearby hosts made us feel welcome. The property is a short drive to great hiking on the AT, and close enough to several National Parks and historical sites. We loved to coming home each evening to grill out and enjoy the sounds of nature.

Thank you, Paul and Beth, for being such perfect guests! I hope you’ll come back soon.
Wonderful accommodations in a beautiful, secluded setting. Perfect for a weekend reunion with three long-time friends! The cottage provided a warm and welcoming refuge after each day of cycling in the country. With a wood stove (kindly lit by the hosts prior to our arrival!), fire pit, deck, screened-in porch, and an ample dining room with farmhouse style table, we had multiple settings for relaxing over good conversation, taking refreshment, and just catching up. And, not to be forgotten, the beds were extremely comfortable (also important after long rides!). BTW, Dirt Farm Brewery and Bluemont Station Brewery and Winery were two of our post-ride favorites and very convenient! And last, but not least, our hosts were exemplary in their hospitality and are to be commended for saving and restoring this historic property for others to experience. A-plus plus!

Perfect guests! Gary and his friends are a class act!
Beautiful house! Loved the porch, the lawn, the tire swing, and unfortunately we didn't have enough time to use the fire pit. It was a perfect place for our family to stay while attending a wedding. And Marcia was very communicative and lovely.
Pleasant little antique cottage in the woods with an interestingly charming story . Comfy beds, kitchen had all we needed. Host was very attentive . House had a musty odor once inside, but after opening a few windows it seemed to dissipate.
We had a wonderful stay in Bluemont! The location is very conveniently located to take advantage of everything that Bluemont and Purcellville have to offer. We thoroughly enjoyed our time at the house and around town. We'd definitely return for another visit.
This house was somehow even more beautiful in person (and that’s saying something because the photos are striking). We loved our time at Bishops Gate. Our host was very helpful. Can’t recommend enough!
We couldn’t have asked for better hosts in Marcia and Bill. They were so nice and hospitable and really helped make the trip a success. Their attention to detail was on full display throughout the house. We have 4 kids under 8 and they loved every minute of the huge backyard, swing, and family time without a TV (they enjoyed the record player and lots of puzzles and games). As an added bonus the house has some neat history that you can learn about. Can’t recommend this home enough, top notch if you want a great “country” experience.
Four of us headed to B Chord Brewing to see a concert and were lucky enough to find this unique, charming rental to make for a fun weekend getaway. While there was plenty to do in the surrounding area (breweries, wineries, corn mazes, hikes), we spent a majority of our time hanging around the cabin as it offered a cozy place to relax, while enjoying the beauty and crisp-air of the autumnal outdoors. While the cabin is situated in a highly-tourist area, it is set back and quaint enough to make you forget about the hussle and bustle of its surroundings. (We were there during peak leaf-peeping season). We would definitely stay again - rustic charm and modern comforts made this an A+ stay.
My friends and I loved everything about Bishop's Gate. The house was charming, clean and very welcoming. We were able to enjoy the peace and quiet and the smore's on the bonfire was a fun touch. The location is perfect and so close to wineries. We will definitely recommend this place to family and friends.
Exceptional cozy place to get away. Every detail of this place was thought through and it shows. Spotless, inviting, and comfortable. We had a quick girls trip here and will definitely be back.
Beautiful house, property, and area. Relaxing and peaceful place to stay. We would definitely love to come back again! The owners are super nice, helpful, and gave us great recommendations for things to do in the area.
My girlfriends and I had an amazing stay. We were greeted upon arrival and had a generous tour by the owners. The house was extremely clean and very welcoming. The location of the house is beyond beautiful. There are many activities you can do or if you want a quiet get away, the house has many relaxing & peaceful areas. We felt like it was a home away from home. We would absolutely go back
A beautiful, quaint home with a lot of character. Staying at Bishop's Gate is like stepping back in time but with all the amenities and the perfect location.
A picture perfect yard with a huge fire pit to enjoy. We had coffee and breakfast on the deck and s'mores by the fire at night (provided by Marcia).
Beds were extremely comfortable and we were able to get a great nights sleep, which when traveling, can be trying. Our only suggestion would be the need for more comfy, inviting furniture in living room.
It was a wonderful weekend and thank you for sharing your home!

About the host
Hosted by Marcia W.
We left the hustle and bustle of suburban Washington, D.C. eight years ago for the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains. When developers wanted to buy this property and destroy the historic homes on it, we made the decision to buy it and restore this home to its former glory. We loved creating Bishop’s Gate’s new life!
What makes this property unique
Bishop’s Gate is just off a main road, but is completely private. You’ll be secluded without being isolated.
