About this property
Lake Cabin Minutes from Oaklawn Race Track and Casino, Hiking Trails, Downtown
Drive down a canopy of crepe myrtle trees to the quintessential lake cabin. Upon entering the great room in this historical cabin, you'll immediately notice the beamed ceilings and stacked stone fireplace that create a warm, yet open environment. A sunken den with half-timbers overlooks the lake. 2 bedrooms and 2 full bathrooms complete the private areas. Don't miss the large deck, covered boat dock, sport court and grilling area.
The main cabin of the house was built in the early 1900’s. The cabin was originally a one room hunting cabin with a fireplace and a wood burning stove. The cabin pre-dated the lake and sat about a mile away from the Ouachita River on a ridge above Stokes Creek. When the Carpenter Dam was finished in 1931 forming Lake Hamilton, the little hunting cabin, was fortunately located well above the water line, thus becoming a lakefront property. In 1952, the property owner built a three story structure incorporating the original cabin and adding, two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a kitchen, a small living room, and a basement.
The property was owned by U.S. Senator and former Arkansas Governor David Pryor and wife, Barbara for approximately 30 years before we purchased the property in 2012. Rumor has it Al Capone fancied the cabin for poker games along with his cronies. If only the walls could talk!
The original cabin warmly greets you as you enter the front door, and the woodsy aroma of a 120 year history of peaceful memories and healing experiences takes you to a special place that instantly feels like home.
We provide two stand-up paddle boards, canoe, kayak, sport court for badminton or corn hole and giant Jenga.
Our prices include all fees. No hidden fees.

Absolutely beautiful place. Such a great cabin feel, loved the wood work, furniture, deck, games, and the dock. Our hosts supplied us with everything we could possibly need. They went way beyond their host duties to make our stay a memorable one. Thank you very much. Looking forward to our return visit.
The host was very welcoming and helpful throughout our visit. The cabin was very comfortable and spacious. We loved the large deck and view of the lake.
The property is beautiful and so peaceful! We loved the easy access to the water and Wendy was so quick to respond if I had any questions! Owners were awesome!
This property is very well stocked and in a great area! We loved the option to rent the boat and swim right off the dock! Good size for us- 3 kids ages 8, 11 and 12.
From the minute we walked in we felt so at home like we were staying in our own family cabin. Wendy and Greg are the greatest hosts and the cabin was more than stocked and had everything we could need. The lake was inviting we spent a lot of time in it
If you are looking for the amazing cabin I highly recommend it we can’t wait to come back
Cool older home with lots of character. Beautiful setting on the lake. Convenient to Hot Springs and the hiking trails around the area. If we return to HS we would definitely stay here again. Wendy was very attentive to our needs with instant feedback!!
We stayed in this beautiful lake home for Thanksgiving with our family. I have never stayed in a VRBO home with a more furnished and supplied kitchen! The fireplace is wood burning and the owner supplied fire wood for us to be able to enjoy it! The beds were comfortable and we found the whole house so inviting! The property is so beautiful and just as pictured on the lake in a quiet area. We enjoyed the stay so much that we rented it again for my grandsons birthday 3 weeks later. I definitely recommend!
This place was everything they said it would be. They literally had EVERYTHING a family could need to enjoy their stay. It was 15 minutes to anything we wanted to do. Wendy was amazing, quick response to everything. Highly recommend!!!
What a great cottege style house with an abundance of charm and history in it. Right on the water and quick access to Hot Springs and all the things to do. Owners were very responsive and set up well for guests with plenty snacks, towels, cooking needs, etc.
Highly recommend the little Italian place close by, Mam’s Little Italy. We ate here a few times since dinner time usually comes around baby bed time so something close was necessary and what a treat. Great food!!! Highly recommend this place for a family or just a charming getaway! 5 Stars!!!
Wendy and Greg have the coolest lake house! The house is warm and full of character. We enjoyed meals and morning coffee on the large patio overlooking the
lake. This place is stocked with outdoor/indoor family games.... we enjoyed badminton each evening. Our teenagers favorite part was the boat that is optional to rent. They wakeboarded, tubed, and skied several days! This place is a winner!!
We loved our stay at the Lake House! The property was perfect for my family. We enjoyed time on the lake and exploring the Hot Springs Area.
The house's history was amazing. The house was very comfortable and worked well for my family. We spent a lot of time on the patio and on the boat dock. We enjoyed paddle boarding, kayaking, boating and swimming off the dock. It was a great place to visit and we hope to be able to come back in the future.
The owners were incredibly friendly, helpful and responsive. We had a wonderful time!
We absolutely loved our stay at The Lakehouse as we celebrated our 2nd Wedding Anniversary and rang in the New Year 2023!
The Lakehouse is perfectly equipped and provided the romantic get away we hoped for. We even canceled our restaurant reservations and opted to grill and enjoy dinner on the deck while taking in the scenery and lake life.
We have stayed at several VRBOs and this home provided us more than we have ever experienced or could ask for!
The host was wonderful and easy to communicate with!
We thank you for providing us a wonderful place to enjoy and make memories!!
Convenient and loved the lake but need a deep clean
Fun cabin, very unique. Plus: well stocked with amenities and the dock was great! Cons: the whole cabin was musty and smelled of mildew; the floors, sheets and kitchen surfaces were clean but the whole house needs a deep cleaning-the rafters, all the decor, needs cleaning. The bathrooms have gaps without caulk where Im sure water sits and has become black mold--i love the old tile but it needs to be caulked and probably re-grouted, and there's visible black mold on the wall inside the downstairs shower. I appreciate that they didn't use scented detergents on the towels and bedding, but i can tell some of the doors have lead paint on them, so consider that if you have small kids. For the price paid for cleaning and all the fees, and considering the mold and must, I'd not stay there again at that price.

We try to fully disclose the nature of the cabin in the description. It is an OLD Log cabin - built more than 100 years ago, predating Lake Hamilton by decades. It was originally a hunter's cabin in the woods. The site-built, rock fireplace dominates the living room inside the original cabin, and the smell of a fireplace is ever present. We cannot remove that distinct smell. Almost everyone who stays there seems to like it the way we do. Also, this is not an investment property that we bought for purposes of renting it out on this or any other site . . . this is our family’s lake cabin. We’ve always tried to repair and replace things only when they have to be replaced and we have tried to stay loyal to the original architecture of the cabin as well as the 1952 addition of “modern” necessities, such as electricity, indoor plumbing, heating and A/C, a kitchen, bathrooms and two floors of bedrooms. We’ve replaced and updated the boat dock, the back deck, all of the appliances and the HVAC system. Last winter it all got a new metal roof.
The downstairs bathroom and shower are probably next on the to-do list of renovations this winter.
As for the reference to black mold, that’s just not true, after this review and before the next reservation, we personally went to inspect and did find a few spots of mildew on the ceiling of the shower and with a splash of bleach and a wipe of a sponge the mildew spots are gone. We’ve admittedly not tested the paint on the doors for lead, we didn’t realize children chewed on doors, but we’ll have it tested and obviously if the paint on the doors contains lead, we’ll have them removed and repainted.
We do an annual deep cleaning of the property in the Springtime, we’ll consider the need to deep clean more often in the future.
As for the complaint of the cost of “all the fees” those include VRBO’s fees and local short term rental taxes to Garland County; those are not something we control and our cleaning fee goes straight to our property manager who personally cleans the cabin, we’re not upselling the cleaning fee, it’s necessary.
We were not able to accommodate this particular reviewer with last minute requests for a discounts. We don’t mind when people ask for legitimate discounts, especially for Veterans and active duty Military families, but normally those issues are worked out at the time of the booking, not the week before you arrive.
What a wonderful experience!!! The owner contacted us two days before our arrival date and offered us a free day if we wanted to travel before the winter storm hit!!! How considerate is that!!! It was 4 degrees our first night, with black ice on the roads as we were arriving!! Five star on customer satisfaction. The original cabin was built in 1910 with a beautiful fireplace and comfortable furniture to just sit and chill and enjoy the perfectly decorated cabin!!!! They had put up a 10 ft Christmas tree for our enjoyment and I brought Christmas stockings to hang on the mantle for Christmas morning!!! The whole cabin was decorated for Christmas !!Sharon and I had a very hard 2022 and this cabin was such a blessing to relax and enjoy the true meaning of Christmas!!!! It’s also very close to town, maybe 10 minutes or less!!!! Boat dock looked very nice although it was way to cold to sit out the or in the huge back porch!!!!!! We will be back for sure!!! Oh yea beds are very comfortable with quality sheets and linens!!! Just a great place all the way around!!!!
This was by far our best trip to Lake Hamilton/Lake Ouachita EVER..!! The house is exactly as stated. It is a lake house. It's and old hunting cabin that has been updated but still holds that old rustic charm. It was perfect. The boat dock/pier was great. When we first got there the kids immediately moved to the lake; jumped in, swam, used the paddle boards and kayaks that were there. We even fished. The deck outside the back door is great as well and we grilled out the first night. Greg and Wendy were awesome and were so helpful. Also, the next door neighbor, Mr. Wayne, came over and greeted us ad said if we needed anything to holler. The people there are so very nice. We even rented the boat and that was a plus. If you get out on Lake Hamilton, make sure to take a trip up to the north dam area; and make sure to jump in, on a hot summer day. The kids did it but couldn't stay in long with the 58 degree temps but it was awesome nonetheless. The home interior is great and is set up perfectly for a family game night. We never turned on the TV because we had something else to enjoy doing as a family. All I can say is we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Thanks again Greg and Wendy for being such great hosts. We are already planning our trip back. God Bless...!!

It always makes us so happy when our guests have a good time and make special memories. That is exactly what we want! Thank you for being such wonderful guests and please come back again!!
This place is a hidden gem. My husband and I booked this for our family, three in college, and one in high school, and it was perfect. The owners went above and beyond what we expected. The communication was stellar, and we will rent from them again.
This house has EVERYTHING you need. Besides our clothing, food, and a few toiletries, we did not need to bring ANYTHING. Packing for this trip was super easy. We ordered our groceries for curbside pickup and would highly recommend it.
The feel of the house is rustic, like a lake cabin your family has owned for years and has a comfortable feel. We felted relaxed from the moment we walk in the door. It's like time slowed down.
Our family enjoyed all the games in the house and outside games, which included badminton, crocket, bocce ball, cornhole, Jenga, paddleboards, canoe, and kayaks. The option to rent the speedboat, complete with tube, skis, wakeboard and kneeboard was the icing on the cake. Inside we enjoyed the record player and use of the piano and other fun instruments.
Morning coffee on the dock with a sunrise paddleboard excursion and late evenings watching the moon rise and night swims were a daily event. There is a variety of fantastic hiking trails in the area that are worth the time. Visit alltrails.com for more details.
Even though you are in an area with everything you need, you will feel like you are secluded while on the property.
If staying at a lake cabin isn't your thing, I suggest looking at the other property they own. It is breathtaking and magnificent for a girls' weekend or getting a few couples together for a getaway.
Thank you so much for making this one of our favorite family vacations.

Such a pleasure to host your lovely family!! Thank you for taking such good care of our home. Please come back again!!
I'm a little late with my review as we stayed for a long weekend at the end of July. The cabin was just as advertised (the Quintessential Lake Cabin). It's the type of place that you see in movies where families go on their annual summer vacations. It's exactly what we were looking for and had everything we needed...all of the modern conveniences while still maintaining the character of it's history...with a perfect location on the water. We spent a lot of time swimming off of the dock and playing games (both table games inside and badminton and giant Jenga outside). It was just a short trip into Hot Springs when we did want to run into town . We look forward to returning in the future.
This is a magical place. The house has a historic charm with all necessary amenities. The location is beautiful, on the water in a quiet channel. The kids loved sleeping and playing on the second floor loft. The outdoor area is serene and relaxing, a perfect spot to play for everyone. Wendy and Greg are the most amazing hosts and we were so lucky to get to meet them. We can't wait to come back here again!
Great place to spend the weekend. This cabin has so many things to experience and enjoy! The water toys, lawn games, musical entertainment (inside), chef’s kitchen…it did not lack a thing! The cabin is so unique and interesting but also did not lack modern conveniences like a dishwasher, streaming tv, and a/c! Thanks, Wendy, for sharing your lake home!
We loved staying here. The cabin was just what we wanted for our spring break getaway. We Enjoyed everything about it, comfy beds, a Kozy kitchen, all the games and especially George strait. What a great week we had.
Thanks for sharing.
Our hosts paid attention to every detail. A very old and charming home made our stay unique and comfortable. Everything we could possibly need was provided. House is placed in an idyllic site on the water, fished off the dock, relaxed on the deck. Comfortable beds. Would stay here again most definitely.
