Great to be able to take our dog and relax. Beautiful views of harbour. Lovely to see and hear birds - heaps of fantails just out the kitchen window. Clean, warm with fire, spacious. Thanks for a great stay.
"Overleigh" is a wonderful old house built in 1910 surrounded by gardens with a lovely view out to Pigeon Bay. The house has tall ceilings and a wide main hallway that is so restful. The bedrooms are big and extremely comfortable. And even though the kitchen has been modernised it still has that "country" feel. One of the features of the kitchen that I personally found exciting was that it had a junk drawer - a virtual treasure trove of bits and pieces just waiting to be used for something one day. Now I have to say this because it might be an issue for certain travellers. "Overleigh" is about 55 minutes' drive from Christchurch AND Akaroa. The sealed roads are extremely bendy, which I didn't mind but some may find tiresome. Now here's a warning - if you want to travel from the house to Akaroa - don't - repeat don't just take the shortest route that your GPS suggests. We ended up driving on a single lane gravel road perched precariously on the side of steep hills with very few areas wide enough to pass an oncoming car. Roads like this don't normally bother me but this "track" is not for the faint hearted. And being typical NZ the view of the scenery from the car was not impeded by safety barriers - a lovely touch for photographers - but a tad worrying for drivers and passengers... (Google Maps says go "via Port Levy-Pigeon Bay Rd, Pigeon Bay Rd and State Hwy 75") - DON'T!Overall - great house - definitely worth staying for two or three nights. Thanks John!
