About this property
Charming summer cottage, steps to town and Shorepath! Sleeps 10
Built circa 1872, Abendruh Cottage is a quintessential, historic Bar Harbor summer home, and one of Bar Harbor's first summer cottages. This charming home is located on a Albert Meadow just a stone's throw from the beautiful Shore Path and Frenchman's Bay, and is a block from the Village Green and bustling downtown Bar Harbor. The property features a luxurious wrap around porch with an expansive lawn (perfect for croquet and badminton), large stone terrace with an iron fire pit, fully updated chef's kitchen, lovely gardens and an outdoor shower. As the owners' family summer home for three generations, it holds history, memories, and beautiful original furnishings from days gone by. There are hardwood floors throughout, lovely antiques, unique windows, four access entries, and plenty of outdoor seating for relaxing and dining.
The first floor of this airy, spacious cottage features a living room, a sitting room with gas fireplace, a study (with a sleep futon), a glorious formal dining room (seats 10), a large, modern chef's kitchen, kitchen table area with a farm table and gas fireplace, separate laundry room, and a 1/2 bathroom. There is also a lovely deck right off the kitchen, where the gas grill is located.
The second floor features a huge master king bedroom (with a twin daybed as well) and full bathroom (with small claw-foot tub and walk-in tiled shower). A large hall connects the queen bedroom, two single bedrooms, and another full bath with a long, old-fashioned bathtub. The back hallway leads to a bedroom with twin beds, another with a double bed, large back bathroom, (with tub and shower), and back stairs leading down to the laundry room/kitchen.
Amenities include internet TV (in study), DVD player, WIFI, dishwasher, washer/dryer, outdoor shower, two gas fireplaces, gas BBQ, and parking for up to 5 cars.
Experience the summer cottage life... take a walk down the iconic and historic Shore Path each morning, sit on a bench in Grant's Park, breathe in the salt air and take in the extraordinary view. Try to climb Balance Rock, the way summer visitors have been doing for over 100 years. Cook a lobster dinner and eat it outdoors on the porch. Amble up to Main Street and the Village Green to go shopping or get ice cream and choose from myriad wonderful restaurants for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Go out and explore the best of Mt. Desert Island and Acadia National Park, including hiking, biking, boating, whale watching, canoeing (kayak and canoe tours), lake swimming, carriage road walks, horse back riding, wonderful dining, shopping, deep sea fishing...Visit the Oceanarium, sail on the Margaret Todd, take a Jackson Lab visitors tour, enjoy tea and popovers at the Jordan Pond House, or golf at a PGA top-rated course.
But most of all, take time to relax on Abendruh's front porch with morning coffee or evening glass of wine and a good book, and create memories that will last a lifetime.

The home was the center of our stay in Bar Harbor and a wonderful place to come home to after days of tours, walking, and time in Acadia National Park. Each of us had our own room, the kitchen was perfect and the porches are spectacular. Not to mention the location to Shorepath and the beautiful views. Would love to return and highly recommend!
This home is exactly as listed. It is in the perfect location - one block from the ocean trail and one block from Main St in Bar Harbor. We never used a car aside from the 20 minute drive into Acadia. The house was clean and beds were comfortable. The kitchen was well stocked. We used the grill and fire pit during our stay. Would recommend to anyone visiting the area! Host was quick to respond and check in and out were very easy.
This is a great place to stay in Bar Harbor. It is very close to all the downtown shops and restaurants. But it is secluded and quiet also. We enjoyed our stay. This is the second time we have been to this house. It is older and historic, and was perfect for us. We saw the Milky Way and all the stars by just walking out to the Shore Path - about 5 minute walk. It has everything you might need, including a washer and dryer. We plan to come again really soon.
We loved this quintessential Maine home! It's perfectly situated a couple of blocks from the center of town and near the Shore path. The house is well kept and it couldn't be a better location.
We stayed for a long weekend and were delighted with this property. Fantastic location, comfortable beds, well appointed kitchen, and a front porch that we spent all our free time enjoying. We were sad to leave and will definitely return!
We loved this location! Our sons enjoyed walking 2 minutes into town and 2 minutes to the shore path! 10 minutes to Acadia. We loved the porch and fire pit area!
A group of former college roommates (now just a bit older…) spent a very pleasant four days here. Very clean, great kitchen, grill, and porch seating. It’s a little old-fashioned in some of the rooms, but it’s also a great price and we weren’t renting in BH to sit in our rooms! Overall we were very happy with the place.
Quiet and charming. Just right to slow dusk and enjoy relaxing
We enjoyed being lazy travelers in this lovely home. It has plenty of room- more than just the two of us really needed- but was a nice vacation spot- very centrally located. We really enjoyed sitting on the large covered front porch as well.
We had a fantastic time with family and friends in Bar Harbor and this house served as the perfect spot as it’s conveniently located a block from town and a couple of miles from the Acadia National Park entrance. The house was appointed with everything one needs to prepare and serve a large family dinner. A perfect place to build lifetime memories. We would recommend this spot to all!
Property as advertised, with a great location between Main and shore. Outside seating is special and fire pit was a great capper for each day. Manager was perfect if there were any issues and cleaners were great. Owner was accommodating. Would go again.
Two families -9 people, kids ages 5,12,13,14,16 fir with room to spare. Location could not be better to explore Bar Harbor. You can walk along the shore pack with beautiful views or walk directly into the village Square. The house was lovely with great porches, fire pit , and lawn.
It is not often you get the opportunity to spend a few nights in a beautiful historic home. Then have the home be one block from the ocean and one block from the downtown. A really special experience.
Our family of eight had a wonderful stay at this beautiful home in late July! This quiet location on a shady lane is just a half a block from the Beautiful Shore path and a half a block from all the shops and restaurants in Bar Harbor. Our grandkids had a great time playing on the expensive front line and we all enjoyed relaxing on the front porch after a day of hiking, and had the chance to use the fire pit one night, which was also fun for all. Comfortable beds, great kitchen with special note that all the drawers and cabinets were labeled so that we could find whatever we needed. Kyle was a great, very responsive host as well! We definitely will love to come back and stay at this very special place again!

Liked: Check-in, location
Great location, plenty of room, but for the exorbitant price paid, I would expect cable TV and more than 1 useable shower. The 2nd shower was too small for anyone taller than 5'0". The only way to watch the TV was to bring a PC that could be connected via a HDMI cable.

About the host
Hosted by Kyle Spruce
Abendruh has been in my family for three generations. Originally bought by my grandmother, who picked out all the wallpaper and painted the living room floor blue, it then belonged to my parents, who were responsible for the kitchen and first floor renovation. My sister and I are now the proud owners, and we hope to keep it in the family.
Why they chose this property
Abendruh is a special property that has been the site of many good memories. It comes with charm and quirks. "Abendruh" means "evening rest" in German, a name picked out by my grandmother, and it has indeed provided rest, after a busy winter, or after a day of good hiking. It is uniquely situated between the shore and town, and is the perfect family vacation spot.
