True to description this is an old farm house. Well appointed. The furnishings and decoration, all as if you're visiting grandma at the home place. The setting in the Ocooch Mountains is unlike anywhere else in the mid-west. Most relaxing weekend I've had in years.
If you are looking for a relaxing, funky place, I can't recommend Dr. Jean's home more! The house and land is beautiful, and it's so close to the Kickapoo Valley Reserve that you're surrounded with trees. We will definitely be coming back!

So glad you enjoyed, we love it here, too- so beautiful and storybook-like to hear the clippity-clap of the Amish buggies along our road! Come back again, Jean
Nice home near LaFarge and the Kickapoo Reserve. Trout fishing creeks nearby. Great birdwatching from the front porch and back deck.

Rachelle-
So glad you had a chance to visit again this year. The Kickapoo Valley Reserve Visitors center, one mile away in 131, is a great resource for birding with regular guided walks and a local bird check list. We just put in a butterfly garden on the property, too!

This farm house is in a great location in Lafarge. The house is funky, eclectic and charming as hell. Clutter in an interesting way that seems necessary. You can pretty much find anything you're in need of here. The bed is comfortable and the place is clean. Best summer rain on the front porch. The owner lives here on and off. It was awkward to run into personal items in the drawers when we went to unpack.
Charming property in LaFarge has everything. Close to the Kickapoo and excellent trout fishing.

We liked the relaxing deck and porch at the property. The porch was great on our rainy day for the morning and evening wildlife entertainment (deer, hummingbirds and other bird species).
Everything was wonderful. There was some issues with getting in touch with landlord through VRBO.
Not the landlords fault, vrbos issue.
Will definitely recommend this place to others!
Disappointed the hot tub was down. Maybe next time 😀
Our group of six (3 couples and 2 pups) loved the location of Jean’s property- it was a two minute drive to the reserve. It was a great location for fly fishing and near enough to Hillsboro and Viroqua for restaurants and breweries. Our dogs enjoyed running around in her large yard and we spent time soaking in the sun on her back porch. There are two main bedrooms, and a third full bed in a loft room leading up into one of the bedrooms. The bathroom was comfortable and spacious and Jean left us local eggs, milk, and butter that we enjoyed for breakfast. Would love to stay here again!

Selected the property and we were pleasantly surprised by the ample space (3 separate beds, 2 in private bedrooms, one at the top of the stairs with space to accommodate us - just as described). The decor of the home is eclectic and unique.
The owner was very friendly and all detail needed for check in was sent the week of our stay with additional info for how to access and what was required upon checkout (strip bedding and take out the trash). We had no issues locating the property and any "normal" items we needed during our stay were easily accessible.
Bathroom tiled shower was luxurious with 2 shower heads, but could use an update.
The place was really unique, clean, and well equipped. The owner was very communicative. However, there were two main issues. The first was the lack of cooling. We were there during a heat wave so maybe it isn’t always an issue but we couldn’t use the upstairs rooms even with the mini split running at full. The A/C also didn’t cool the house off. If you are coming in warm weather, be wary of if the two beds upstairs are even usable. They were not for us. The second issue was that the listing said there was a hot tub and access to a (communal) pool. The hot tub did not have any water in it and was not in working order. While the owner did offer to come get it going we were expecting it to be running when we got there. There also was no pool access included, not on site or in the community. The nearest community pool was several miles away and was not included. So if you are planning to stay there, please know there is no pool access of any kind. Hopefully the owner will update the listing as it was inaccurate.

Benjamin,
so sorry about the cooling system upstairs -I had the technicians out today and the refridgerant was low. The upstairs is now chilly again. The hot tub is now set up and the listing is more clear. Thanks for the heads up.

Had great weather with great people. It was a farm house as described so you have to expect a little Japanese beatle takeover. Perfect spot to check out the stars and relax. Spent a lot of time at Wildcat Mountain.... Beautiful area!!
This was a lovely place to stay for a few days. We enjoyed many of the special touches (flowers, eggs & butter). We enjoyed all the recreational opportunities in the area (kayaking, hiking). Hot tub took a long time to warm up, & we could not figure out the propane fireplace on the deck.
The home and outdoor spaces were perfect for us. We love nature and the sights and sounds of birds and the stillness of country air was beautiful. The house is great for two or a family and two couples. First floor boasts a bedroom and walk in shower. This is exactly what I needed with recent surgeries.
Enjoy this home!

The place was a mess.
A/C was a floating air-cooler
Hot tub was cold
Didn’t stay there
Still waiting for VRBO resolution!😬
This is such a quaint place to stay with everything you need and a lot of extras. We loved our stay.
All the necessities and lots of extras were available. It was so peaceful and relaxing my granddaughter said it was exactly the kind of farm house she wants to live in after college.
Comfortable, clean, hot water-we just needed a place to stay for a couple days and this was perfect for us. Milk and eggs in the fridge, an electric fireplace, a hot tub we’re nice amenities.
This was the perfect spot for a winter get together with a couple good friends! The kitchen is well equipped for cooking with everything you need to make a good meal, including a nice selection of spices. The hot tub was very relaxing and fit 4 adults nicely. The living room is very cozy with a convenient gas fireplace. This is a very homey place to stay!
We loved our stay. The house is very charming and has a great location: easy access to Kickapoo Reserve and the Kickapoo River.

About the host
Hosted by Jean T Grade
I'm a large animal veterinarian and ethnobotanist, working with Amish, organic and homesteaders in the Driftless area. I lived with semi-nomadic tribes in East Africa for 15 years and still work there annually, as well as with the Navajo Nation and National Parks allowing others to enjoy my home whilst I'm out.
Why they chose this property
My home is close enough to walk to the village, but only one house separates our property from the 9000 acre reserve. It has a warm cozy fireplace at the flip of a switch, room for my redwood hot tub out back and wonderfully close to the Kickapoo Valley Reserve for biking, skiing and paddling. Great gathering place for my family and friends who like to fly fish and horse back ride or just enjoy amazing organic food.
What makes this property unique
I love the sound of Amish buggies clopping by, at night, the stars are fabulous, you'll be able to hear the coyotes and owls along the nearby Kickapoo. This area is prone to flooding, but the Seelyburg Point is high enough to stay dry - all while watching the 20 foot wide river swell to 1/2 mile across in the distance. The village park is just across the street with music during the summer, at the point there's views of the ball field below. On the edge of the village and the country with benefits of both.
Seelyburg Point has an organic garden that you're welcome to enjoy. Juliee, a local farmer, will bring you Sunday brunch if you wish. There's a wine bar in town, or go to nearby Rockton bar for Sunday chicken dinner that attracts bikers. Farm to table Driftless Cafe in Viroqua for local organic farm fare or just enjoy the kitchen and grill at home with fresh local foods from Organic Valley, various Amish farms, cheese stores, Viroqua coop or fresh caught fish.
