About the host
Hosted by ALISON MURPHY
For a number of years before we bought Marshview, our family came to Moody Beach on vacation. Our time here was a delightful respite from our stressful lives. When we would drive over the Portsmouth Bridge, we could feel the stress leave our bodies, smell the sea air and experience a sense of well-being. Our children loved coming here; they made friends with whom they still maintain ties.
In 1988, we purchased Marshview and that’s when the work began. That first year, every weekend from Thanksgiving to May on Thursday or Friday afternoon, we left New York drove 4-5 hours to Maine to work on the house. Most of the work we did was invisible: we stripped the rooms of layers-upon-layers of wallpaper; rewired the electric; cleaned, cleaned, cleaned; de-cluttered and more; we threw out broken and old furniture; and we never thought our home would be ready to open to guests.
The house was dark inside so we began by painting it light colors to bring the outside—in. Our painting projects have gone through many changes throughout the years as we try to attain the perfect “Beach Style”.
Decorating has always been more fun than putting on a new roof, rebuilding the subfloor, installing hardwood floors in the living rooms and new kitchen floors, remodeling and replacing everything in bathrooms on both sides of the house—including the floors, walls, ceilings. But these things had to be done, so during the years we’ve done all of these things also.
Most of the hard work is done. Now I work so Marshview reflects the blue of the sky and the azure of the water, the sparkle of the sun and sand, the freshness of the atmosphere--all that's wonderful about being here.
We love being the owners of Marshview. We’ve met such lovely people and welcomed them and their families to our home. We appreciate hearing about their stays. We hope you will join us too.
Write us about a visit.

Why they chose this property
WHY STAY AT MARSHVIEW? In addition to being a lovely, comfortable home only 500 yds. from the beach, Marshview is in a great location. We’re only a trolley ride from Ogunquit with its boutiques, specialty shops, restaurants for all tastes and clubs to enjoy dancing and singing. (Don’t forget to stop at the fabulous & unique “Spoiled Rotten” on Beach St.) There are concerts at Ogunquit harbor.
Take Shore RD. (at the crazy intersection in Ogunquit) toward Perkins Cove, and in addition to tempting eateries there are many art galleries. In Perkins Cove seafood restaurants abound and it’s a port for sight-seeing cruises, deep sea fishing and other activities. There are jewelry designers, potters and other interesting shops.
Drive further south on Route 1, stop in York at the amusement park, the game farm, the taffy store and its historic village. Or travel south for another 30 minutes, you’ll find the Kittery outlets which line both sides of the road. Many people enjoy shopping at the Kittery Trading Post.
North from our house on Route 1 is the Village of Kennebunk and to the northeast is Kennebunkport—two great places to visit. In addition to the beauty of nature and the summer home of George H. Bush, there are art galleries, boutiques, novelty and clothes stores, designer jewelry, potters, and of course—restaurants.
Further north the meandering roads take you through quaint fishing villages, where antique shops abound. In about 30-40 min., you arrive in Freeport, the home of L.L. Bean and other high-end outlets. It’s an easy town in which to walk around, with lots of rest stops, sidewalk or restaurant food and great shopping. Don’t miss having lobster at Harraseeket Lunch & Lobster Company, located on the beautiful South Freeport waterfront in South Freeport, Maine. It’s a local landmark for natives and visitors alike. This is a “must” for us; we sit, enjoy the food, relax & enjoy view of the beautiful harbor. It's a great way to end a day.

What makes this property unique
It’s nice to have all the benefits of home without the hassle. Each year, we try to make sure we provide the amenities—both large and small—to add to your enjoyment. Although I’ve written about all the great area restaurants, our kitchen is spacious and a great gathering place for family meals. If you’d like to eat breakfast out, try the Egg & I, or Merriland Farms. Located off Rt. 1 north going toward Kennebunk on Coles Hill Road in Wells, the food is a treat, as is the jam we always leave for our guests as a gift. (There’s also a nice executive golf course there.) Marshview is great because it's an easy, short walk--only 500 yds.--to the beach—and what a beach it is! It’s private, sandy, friendly and a gathering center for the neighbors, but there’s always room to find a quiet spot for you and family. The beach is the scene of football, baseball and bocce other games, horseshoes, kit flying, Frisbee contests. There are sand castles, mermaids of all kinds, sand toys and sea shells.
Just looking at the ocean is a source of respite. Lobster boats, yachts, pleasure crafts, lobster traps, Nubble Lighthouse, Kennebunkport, Ogunquit and Perkins Cove are all visible. (On the Fourth of July, fireworks can be seen from Ogunquit and from Kennebunkport.) Standing in, dodging or riding the waves, surfing, tubing, kayaking, canoeing are some of the activities people enjoy. Others love walking, looking for shells, bike riding, searching for hermit crabs or other ocean treasures.
Our rooms are large, airy, bright and clean. They're designed and furnished with you and your family in mind. If you want to stretch your vacation dollar, staying at Marshview is less expensive than staying in one of the homes on the beach. We take pride in our home and what we offer to our guests.
