About the host
Hosted by Lauren Morton
We bought this property in 2018, after falling in love with each other, and then with this special place on the Potomac a few years later. We were married here in August 2019 and are now excited to share it with our guests and friends.
Why they chose this property
Reached by a mile-long paved driveway, Morland's main house was originally built in 1927 by Woolridge Brown and Lucie Taylor Morton. We purchased it back into the family in 2018 (John is their great grandson). The name is a simple contraction of “Mortons’ land," though it now represents a much larger family of friends who have lived and celebrated here.
Additional buildings were added between 1927 and 1935, including a four-car carriage house, horse stables (soon to be our winery), ice house and smoke house, and three guest cottages: the River Cottage, the Garden Cottage and the Boys’ House -- the latter built for Brown and Lucie's two sons on return from World War II. These structures, a fountain and a swimming pool, along with several gardens and terraces, sit on 20 cleared acres that now compromise the 160-acre estate.
What makes this property unique
Property includes two vineyards, pool, beach, dock access, and multiple english gardens that include a fountain and hedge that is known to be the oldest in Virginia. We were planned to be a highlighted stop on the Fredericksburg Garden tour in 2020.
2 kayaks, a paddleboard, fish poles, and yard games available throughout your stay.
