Stay somewhere else

There are a lot of other properties available. Save yourself the headache and book elsewhere. The king bedroom had an awful smell most likely from water leaking from the roof. The rug was soaked and basically this room was off limits.

Lakefront property, Big Bear

The property is as pictured. That check-in process was easy and communication with the host was excellent. The property is right on the lake with beautiful views and balconies off each room. We had a wonderful stay. Highly recommend.

Great location! Our group really enjoyed our stay. The views from the decks were awesome. Grilling and hot tubing while looking at the lake were great. When we had an issue with the hot water, host was quick to respond. Great location near shuttle stop to Oktoberfest!

Fishing Trip

Amazing location, Amazing property, and overall a wonderfully rental property. The only issues were that the rental did not come with toiletries, cleaning supplies, many spiderwebs and lastly the roof sprung leak on us early morning. None of the negative point would keep me from renting this property again not major issues for us.

Thank you, Next.

This camp home has potential. It's a beautiful home but it needs an upgrade (the stove, beds, and windows). It's dirty since there were mouse droppings and no hand soap. The pictures online are not close to what this house looks like. I'll rather pay a little more and stay somewhere more upgraded.

Outdated property description

The communication with the property manager was spot on. The property itself is outdated, the roof was leaking in various locations. The preset heater temperature did not extend to the 2nd level. Sliders do not lock on the 1st and 2nd level. Could not use the washer or dryer without the breaker tripping. Overall stay was not worth what was paid.

Disappointing

We enjoyed the location and being on the lake, but there were a few things not great about our stay. The house was a bit outdated, beds were really uncomfortable, one of our friends ended up having to sleep on the couch because his back was hurting after the first night. The kitchen lacked basic supplies, no salt, pepper or cooking oil. Only one burner on the stove top would ignite, and the oven rack didn't work so looks like someone put a pot to hold it up. We couldn't find a hair dryer and there was no soap in the showers. The loft light and fan would not turn on. Lastly the spa jets didn't seem to work or very minimal pressure. For the price we paid, it was disappointing to not have the basic amenities. Perhaps most disappointing was the owner’s response when I provided this feedback. She was very dismissive and basically said they are not a hotel and did not address anything regarding the stove, lights, fan and jacuzzi not functioning properly. While a great location definitely not worth the money they are charging and not very accommodating.

Quaint but did not meet expectations

The cabin needs some upgrading as other reviewers have stated. The lock in the sliding glass door in the living room is non-existent so it's a good thing it's on the second floor. The jacuzzi was partially filled so we couldn't use it. We knew from the description the boat dock wasn't available but it needs serious repair if/when the water level does go back up. Word of warning, the light in the 2nd floor bathroom has a timer. It will switch off leaving one to shower in the dark. For the price I paid, it was not worth it and the $200 cleaning fee is steep considering it was not spotless. The last thing I'll mention ... bring another wine glass if there's more than one person drinking wine. They have exactly 1 but many champagne glasses. The location was quiet and the pool table was a bonus even though it's in a tight space. I would stay here again but absolutely not at this price.

Loved our Christmas 2024 Trip

We spent our Christmas week in the cabin with some family. Great experience. Issues that other guests have had are fixed already or fixable with common sense. For instance, the downstairs bedroom with the queen bed is coldest, keep the door open. It took us one night to figure that out. Check the vents to make sure they’re open. Loft is the warmest (duh, hot air rises). Kitchen had almost everything you need, but no spices but so what, not a big deal to grab in town, try out grocery outlet! They have everything! Upstairs bathroom had some issues with warmth, but it wasn’t cold. Just wasn’t super hot. I’m always freezing but I managed to use this shower for our entire 5 day stay. Downstairs shower has hotter water so if you like that better, go use that one. Some spider webs, but never saw a spider. It’s a mountain, spiders live there too. They definitely caused no issue for us. We had an issue at check in but it was resolved within 30 minutes and we were able to get into the beautiful cabin. Nice big clean fridge. The pool table was a great time. The cabin was clean and quiet, plenty of room, and worked well for our group. We had a wonderful Christmas, and can’t think of any real complaints. Perfect location for us. Close to town. Everything was clean, everything works. Loved the wrap around porch and views. Our party ranged in age from 11-67 and everyone enjoyed their time. Thank you so much!!

Mold everywhere

My daughter arrived at 3pm which is check in time and the cleaning lady was there. She had to wait another 45 minutes for her to finish. Mold and mildew in both bathrooms - shower walls, outside the shower doors and all around the seal of the tub. Mold growing in corners of the bedrooms downstairs (in the wood). You can tell where someone tried to patch some areas that have leaked but didnt do it very well. The iciing on the cake was when my son in law took a shower in the upstairs bathroom and water started pouring from the light fixture in the bedroom beneath it. As well as the wall on the far side of the same bedroom. I contacted Stacie and I did get an immediate response. Her solution was to send someone to the house to change the bedding on the beds that got wet. No apology or anything. So 8 people had to share 1 shower for 3 days. Now onto the dust layer. So thick on the railing of the loft you couldn't even blow it off. The toilet paper holder fell off the wall as soon as it was touched. The reviews I read said that it was a very clean place. And that is not what we experienced. Extremely disappointed

Beware of description

My family and I made the best out of our stay, but we didn't have the best experience. I stayed at this home in the wintertime and there's not many upgrades, only upgrade to the upstairs bathroom. The reason why I booked the second time around because we enjoyed our stay a few years back and we thought since its summer month we could take our boat since the description states the home have a boat dock. So, we booked-after booking we messaged the host and asked if we can leave our boat at the dock during our stay, she messaged back and said let me get back to you. I waited a couple days with no response. We never got a response. As it got closer to our stay I called and left a message-no response! So, I sent her a text message and she finally responded saying they will try and get the dock moved and we can fish off of it. Good we didn't take the boat cause the dock was submerged in water. We couldn't even fish off of it. Second, refrigerator didn't get cold, I reach out and she said for me to place a bowl of ice in the refrigerator and the reason why it wasn't getting cold is because I filled it up with warm food. Thank God we brought coolers because we had to keep our drinks in the cooler and switch food from freezer to refrigerator to keep cool. No light over pool table, was told to get lamps from downstairs. LASTLY, Gas leak from stove igniter, woke up with the whole house smelling like gas. She sent someone out but that's it-no follow up on the issue. Very disappointed

The photos must have been taken a LONG time ago there was water damage in every room holes in the walls that go the outside of the home(can literally see the sun shining through the holes), HUGE safety issue as 3 out 4 sliders do not lock, 1 slider has no handle on it and they have a bench in front of it (not going to stop a person or bear from coming in) it looked like mod on the walls near water damage, the carpets were dirty had an animals hair in the living room and we didn’t even want to walk around without shoes, cobwebs everywhere, patios were dirty, the boat slip was beat up so many broken boards, we open the spa and it was full of ants in one corner, the owner never responded unless it was about money, I messaged a few times asking about if the TVs were smart TVs so we knew if we could do a presentation on it or not and no answer, I asked if the house was available on Thursday and instead of responding and allowing me to ask follow up questions they just added the night without my approval ( we didn’t use the extra night and still tried to charge me because they assumed we were taking it without discussing it with me. I don’t recommend this place at all. If we had another place I would asked for a refund. It seems they could care less about the house or the people who stay there.

The cabin was great. The rooms were roomy. We loved the pool table, the kitchen and the loft. No major issues. We enjoyed the barbecue and decks, as well as the wildlife. The Jacuzzi was a little bit smelly. The only other issue was the corner of the lake was a little grimy in the water, but overall we really enjoyed our stay.

Great lakeside location. We would definitely repeat a stay here. Kitchen was large with plenty of pots/ pans/ utensils. No basic spices or cooking items but I asked the host ahead of time so we weren’t missing anything since we cooked all of our meals at the house. Gas stove was a bit difficult to start for baking / oven but did eventually work. Grill is charcoal, which is nice to know for planning. Upstairs bathroom was nicely updated. Only concerns: some of the wood in the decks is pretty rotten and could use some replacement as there are some boards that are entirely rotten/ dangerous. A couple of the chairs at the kitchen bar were wobbly and there were only 6 dining chairs in a home that fits more guests so we had to do some musical chairs for meals. Beds downstairs in the singles room are extremely uncomfortable/ old spring mattresses with obvious indentations even without laying on them. All of our guests that stayed in that room complained about the beds.

Great spot- nice cabin

The place was easy to find and easy to gain access. I was there with my three kids and we loved the coziness of the cabin and used the spa which was out on the deck everyday. The slider to the upstairs porch didn't have a latch but was not an issue. I let the owner know but never heard back.I would recommend bringing salt/pepper and any other cooking stuff and condiments you might need. We stay at rental places often and i should know better... There was nothing in the cabin when we arrived. The only thing that would have made the trip better was if I had heard back from the property manager- i reached out several times and never heard back. With that said- I would go back! Super charming little spot.

Extremely disappointing for the price paid… as soon as you walk in it REEKS OF Cigarette SMOKE. No hot water you will stand there for minutes freezing wondering if this will ever warm up.. it doesn’t … you get spider webs around every turn, not joking from ceiling to walls to in between bedframes… cabin is falling apart … there have been some renovations but over all this place is a liability for injury… thankful we were ok.. It was COLD ! , you can literally see through the cabin walls due to deteriorating wood smh … Lost power for a couple mins on day 2 ..heater is extremely loud good luck sleeping.. checked the closets and found dirty sheets from previous stays.. that room smelled nice! The best part about the cabin was that we did not get bitten by a brown recluse or freeze to death.. location was extremely convenient but that’s about the only thing this place had going for it.. not worth the money find a another property …

About the host

Host profile image
My name is Stacie and my husband and I have owned and rented homes in Big Bear Lake for the last 20 years. I am the owner and the property manager. We originally purchased our first home in Big Bear when we were newly married and were looking for a way to have a vacation home with our 2 golden retrievers and make some extra money through renting it out. It has been an amazing experience sharing our home with so many amazing guests and look forward to all the new ones in the future.

Why they chose this property

Bear's Lair is by far our favorite home that we have owned and rented. We love the amazing views of Big Bear Lake, the mountains, and the marina right outside our back door. Bear's Lair is located in such a great walkable neighborhood whether you walk along the shore of the lake or window shop the homes in our neighborhood. It is located a short drive from the village and Snow Summit and Bear's Lair.

What makes this property unique

Bear's Lair is a four season rental. No matter what time of year you visit, you can take advantage of the great location and amenities.
