Peacock Garden Cottage - Discounted for Winter Month Rental
Nestled in a picturesque hamlet, this charming two-bedroom, one-bathroom cottage offers a serene escape into nature. Inside, you’ll find an inviting eat-in kitchen, a cozy living room, and a sunroom—all designed for gathering while embracing the outdoor views. Handmade furniture and original artwork add a unique, personal touch throughout the home. Step outside onto two spacious decks, perfect for al fresco dining and grilling. The surrounding private gardens and wildlife are nothing short of magical.
The master bedroom features a comfortable queen bed, while the second bedroom offers two twin beds that can be seamlessly converted into a king upon request. Need extra space? The sunroom includes a sofa bed for additional guests.
Beyond the house, a secluded back deck invites you to unwind amidst a wild hill garden that spills over onto the space. Stone steps lead up to a peaceful, leveled lawn dotted with native flora and towering trees. Once, a narrow-gauge railway passed through this land, carrying milk from the region’s dairy farms to the city. A second intimate side deck, nestled under a canopy of trees, overlooks a sun-dappled lawn.
This is not your typical upstate retreat. The landscape is lush and untamed, alive with the sights and sounds of nature. Peacocks wander through, adding to the exotic charm. The surrounding black walnut, spruce, maple, and willow trees create a natural sanctuary for birds and small wildlife. Expect an immersive experience—more woodland escape than manicured garden.
The cottage is located on a scenic country road, surrounded by rolling hills and horse farms—perfect for leisurely walks and cycling. It sits within the quaint, sought-after hamlet of Shekomeko, a historic “bend in the road” with a peaceful, timeless feel. The owner’s home is next door, ensuring attentive hospitality if needed.
Reaching the Peacock Garden Cottage is easy. It’s just over a two-hour drive from NYC, or you can take the Metro-North train to Wassaic, followed by a short taxi ride. The charming towns of Millerton (home to antique stores and the Millerton Movie House) and Pine Plains (featuring the acclaimed Stissing House Restaurant and Stissing Center for Arts & Culture) are both nearby. A short drive west brings you to Hudson, Rhinebeck, and Red Hook, while heading east takes you to Sharon, Lakeville, and Salisbury, Connecticut. Great Barrington, with its boutique shopping, is just 40 minutes away. Outdoor enthusiasts will find an abundance of hiking trails, and the historic Lime Rock racetrack is a quick 25-minute drive. The Wassaic Project and The Lantern Bar & Pizzeria are also close by.
Perched at the northern edge of Dutchess County, this area marks the meeting point of New York, Connecticut, and Massachusetts, placing you at the foothills of the Berkshires. Whether you explore the region or simply soak in the peaceful surroundings, this is a place to experience the bucolic dream.

This is a lovely, very well-appointed house that was very comfortable, quiet, and pleasant to stay in. The hosts were immediately receptive and kind, and we'd stay again, given the opportunity. Thank you!
The house is located in one of the most beautiful places in all of NY State. Quite scenic and great location. My one issue is the peacocks that make a lot of noise in the morning.

Easy to find, fully equipped, great light, within 20 minutes of a lot of great spots (probably less if we didn’t keep stopping to admire the scenery). Hosts respond immediately to questions. Early morning, we saw peacocks.
We enjoyed everything about Peacock Cottage! The house is simple but very clean, comfortable and well equipped with everything we needed. There are two private outdoor decks to enjoy surrounded by beautiful gardens, trees and wildlife. The hosts were very helpful and provided lots of information about the area. Fresh flowers in every room were so sweet and welcoming! We will definitely come again!
We stayed in this house last year and liked it so much we went back again. Three of us stayed very comfortably - two of us sharing a room with the twin beds, and the 3rd getting her own big bed. We spent time sitting around the kitchen table as well as hanging out in the living room. We had everything we needed, very easy and cozy. The countryside around is gorgeous, with the leaves changing colors. And the peacocks coming to visit is a bonus! Note that the house is a bit hard to find on the winding country roads, but look for the star in the window! (And Google Maps/Waze are super helpful, just make sure you put the destination into your phone before you get out there where there's no wifi signal.)
Excellently located to all we wanted to do! The property itself was cute and quiet. We spotted some peacocks across the street, and off the top of my head I cannot recall another time I’ve seen as many native bird species! Watching the bird feeders while enjoying morning coffee was one of the best parts of our stay. If we are ever in the area again, we would be happy to stay here once more!
My friends and I had a wonderful stay. The house was very well set up, with all the dishes, towels, blankets, firewood, and everything else we might need. The decor makes it feel very homey (we especially liked the wallpaper in the bathroom). We spent lots of time sitting around the kitchen table talking, eating, drinking, and looking out the back window at the trees and animals. We even saw the peacocks strutting around the house on our last morning! We hope to go back next year.
We needed to just get away for a few days and recharge our batteries. The Peacock Garden Cottage was the perfect remedy! And yes, there are peacocks! We went in early November, which meant some crisp fall air and beautiful foliage. There are plenty of fun things to do and they are all a short car ride away. Our hosts were very welcoming and quick to respond to any messages. A terrific experience overall!
Peacock Garden Cottage was just as described—comfortable, charming, and nicely appointed. I stayed with my spouse and two kids, 3 and 8, for a fall weekend. We had everything we needed and enjoyed the garden and the birds. The kids especially loved the peacocks and peahens! We toasted marshmallows over a fire, went hiking at Bash Bish Falls, and went to the farmer’s market at Millerton. The area is also especially beautiful. Highly recommend!
This property was one of the best we've stayed at. Actual peacocks, but that wasn't the best part. The location is very private and quiet. The house is great for a small group.
It was a bit buggy due to heat and rain, but that really didn't even bother us. A few small issues that the hosts addressed immediately. Love it when the host is local.
Their attention to detail was so appreciated. Fully stocked kitchen (for real ... not someone saying it's stocked). Wifi was great. My husband was able to work remotely with three laptops plus 4 other connected devices. That's a first.
Lots of great food options in Millerton and Pine Plains.
If you're even looking at this property? Book it. We'll be back.
Final note? Master bed was amazing. We like a firm mattress for our backs. Kids slept great, too,. They enjoyed the couches with the TV.
Lovely stay in a gorgeous part of upstate New York
It's a lovely, comfortable and well-equipped cottage with thoughtful and generous hosts, situated in a beautiful area with great walks right from the house and others nearby. We enjoyed spending time inside and outside the house, surrounded by gardens and birds, and hope to visit again soon.
What a delightful and cozy place! Very clean, warm and comforting cottage! Loved all the wonderful details in every room and the peacocks that came to visit while we there. The garden is also like lovely. I would highly recommend staying here. It's in the perfect location to get to the Millbrook winery, or Pleasant Valley! Thank you again we will be back!
