Great Diamond Island in Casco Bay, off the coast of Portland, is one of the most picturesque islands in Maine.

Visitors come via ferry, water taxi, or private boat to explore this secluded jewel and take in the island's 193 acres of spectacular natural landscape perfect for outdoor recreation and relaxing.

Diamond Cove is the island's small private residential community, formerly a military base built during America's Gilded Age. Army structures that were once scattered over the land have been restored and are now homes with wonderful historic detail and character.

Prior to being an army base, Diamond Cove was a famous artists' retreat where American literary greats such as Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Harriet Beecher Stowe spent time.

Today, Diamond Cove is also home to the luxurious Inn at Diamond Cove, highly rated Diamonds Edge Restaurant, and the Fort McKinley Museum.

With its spectacular sunsets, sheltered beaches, and acres of old-growth forest, this unique and historic location offers visitors an unparalleled opportunity to experience the tranquility of Maine island living.

Great Diamond Island is not accessible from the mainland by car and primary modes of transportation are golf carts and bicycles.

Community Amenities include:
Duckpin bowling
Fitness gym
Game room
Indoor basketball court
Library
Mailroom
Private beaches
Swimming pool
Tennis courts
Walking trails

Lovely facility on a Maine Island

This was a terrific VRBO for a family gathering. Spacious, attractive convenient, located in the middle of a converted military base that offers many communal facilities that most VRBOs lack. Beautiful manicured lawns and easily walkable, with quick ferry service to Portland, Me. Only hitch, we couldn't find the thermostat, so a late September stay was a bit cool.
