About this property

106 acre Farm with Animals, River & Private Pond, near Wineries and Breweries

Escape to Belle Meade Farm, a magnificent 106-acre estate overlooking the James River, once owned by Thomas Jefferson's family. Nestled in the serene countryside, the property is just a mile away from historic downtown Scottsville, a short 25-minute drive to Charlottesville, and near many wineries and breweries. Experience the ultimate outdoor adventure by indulging in a plethora of activities, including petting the cats and dogs, catch and release fishing at our pond, or tubing the river!

The space
The building where you will be staying is perched on the highest point of the farm and features an exclusive, private 1200 square ft second floor suite with breathtaking views of the James River and rolling hills. The suite boasts two spacious bedrooms with plush Casper queen mattresses, a full bathroom, a fully-equipped kitchen, an adjacent dining area with a bar sitting area, and a cozy living room with two couches, one of which converts to a comfortable queen bed. The living room also has an electric fireplace, a TV, and a game area for the kids, complete with board games. For your convenience, there is also a brand new washing machine and steam dryer that are located in the kitchen area, and complimentary coffee, tea, and snacks are provided upon check-in.

Guest access
At Riverview at Belle Meade Farm, you'll have the opportunity to see many friendly animals, including our three dogs, cats, and other animals as well. Our friendly dogs, Abby, Lucy, and Sweetie, love attention from children and adults alike. The cats are always happy to greet guests, and the white cat named "Angel" is a favorite and loves to lounge around in the driveway. We kindly request that you don't bring your own pets, as we have plenty to keep you company.

Explore the property at your leisure and indulge in petting our cats and dogs, but please ensure that children are always supervised. Our personal house is just a couple of hundred feet away, and while we may be working around the farm, we'll respect your privacy. You'll have the entire second floor of the building to yourselves with a private entrance however, you will have to walk up a flight of stairs to access the main area. The first floor consists of an office/storage area and also our first floor suite short term rental that will be coming online and available to book starting May 2026.

Take a hike, bike ride, or a slow drive along our driveway and gravel trails throughout the property totaling over one mile combined, but please don't venture past the two barns as it's a private residence. Feel free to walk to our beautiful pond by following the walking trail. Please do not use any equipment including canoes or boats or kayaks that you may see but you are more than welcome to bring your own fishing rods and fishing equipment to enjoy catch and release fishing. Feel free to walk, bike, or drive down the half mile gravel road to our river entrance as well. About a half mile from your suite, The James River Batteau Co. which has been featured in Virginia Living Magazine, The Smithsonian Magazine, and The Washington Post, will be having seasonal riverside gatherings consisting of special farm to table dinners along our river edge on their unique Batteaux at our river entrance every other weekend from July through October. Also they may host an occasional wedding event there. If you would like more information about their events you may contact them by looking up the James River Batteau Co in Scottsville. If there is an event it will be about a half mile from your quarters along the river edge. You are welcome to share the river entrance but please respect their equipment or props that may be set up.

Peaceful Country Setting Close to Restaurants

We stayed three nights for a wine-tasting getaway and a trip to Monticello. Everything is close by, the wineries and Monticello. The lovely little town of Scotsville has wonderful restaurants and a terrific coffeeshop/bakery with muffins, scones and delicious quiche. The farm is wonderful with dogs and cattle and a firepit! The living room is quite comfortable for late night chats and the kitchen is fully functional! What a nice time! The hosts are terrific and friendly and willing to help steer us in the right direction!

About the host

Hosted by Pam, Charlie, and George

Host profile image
I was born in Maryland and moved to Virginia where I attended college and received my B.A. I worked for several universities and for a Congressman on Capitol Hill before moving to the farm. I met George, my husband, in college. Several years later I came to see him where he was living on the farm. The farm seemed so peaceful and very tranquil and its natural beauty with the rolling hills and river overwhelmed me. Almost 40 years later I am still on this wonderful farm, full of animals, a pond, river view and the majestic 100 year old oak trees that surround our home. I enjoy gardening, rescuing dogs and cats that live here and seeing the wildlife that is abundant. I enjoy meeting our wonderful guests and hoping they enjoy the scenic views and natural beauty as much as I do.

Why they chose this property

This farm has been in my husband’s family for several generations. He inherited this wonderful farm and we hope to pass it on to the next generation. The 106 acres is bordered by the scenic James River. Our river entrance enables people to wade, tube, kayak, and fish in the river. We have over a mile of roads and trails for you to walk for drive. The property has a pond with a dock where you can sit and enjoy bird watching, seeing Mountain Laurel and wildlife. The panoramic view from the guest house is beautiful and our loving animals are available to pet and enjoy.

What makes this property unique

Once you are here on the farm, you feel so relaxed and it seems like you are miles away in the country, but the Town of Scottsville is less than 5 minutes away offering multiple restaurants to dine, a local brewery, small shops to shop, and a grocery store. Some wineries are only 10 to 20 minutes away. Charlottesville is 25 minutes.
