About this property
Sweet winds over Hurricane Hole St John
Sweet Wind is a West Indian style home that sits just above secluded Hurricane Hole. Easy access off the main road #10 with a paved driveway . There are 32 solar panels and 3 Tesla batteries to supply the power, no WAPA outages. The villa is very private, quiet and secluded, being in the Nat. Park. It's only 1/2 mile from Coral Bay which sports live music most nights, shopping and fine or informal dining. Right below the villa there is a pebble beach with 4 kayaks available to explore the 5 bays that include Hurricane Hole. The snorkeling is good with mangroves and reefs, along with sandy beaches. I designed and built the house in the more traditional West Indian style of 3 individual buildings with large decks connecting them. The main house being the kitchen, living room, and dinning room. There is a bedroom and bathroom attached via a private deck on the West side of the main house. On the East side of the main house there is a 3rd building, housing 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms with a large deck in between w/ dining table and lounge chairs. All the rooms have amazing views, you feel like you are floating right over the ocean, and this layout makes them very private. A lot of love and care went into designing Sweet Wind. Down stairs there is a 10x20 pool and another vert private bedroom/bath. This is my own private art gallery, with hardwood floors, Purple Heart cabinets, fine dishes, antique furniture, local treasures and a bit of humor. There are two separate decks for complete privacy. One of the showers is outside, built with beautiful rock work. The bedrooms are in separate buildings, or pods which adds to the beauty and privacy. There is a 4th bedroom downstairs near the pool with bathroom and outside shower. There is a lovely grotto behind the villa with an amazing stone retaining wall 9' tall and 100' long running all along the back side, that has the BBQ, orchids, flowers and herbs, and an outside shower. The villa has gates at both entrances that keep the wild donkeys out and children in. You wake up to an amazing sunrise above Hurricane Hole. This is the most protected harbor in the Caribbean, and we look out over the Coral Reef National Monument. There is no overnight mooring allowed in Hurricane Hole unless there is a storm warning, so views are unobstructed. Sweet Wind is very quiet and private but just 1/2 a mile from town and you don't hear all the music and noise from Coral Bay I think the photos say it all, Nina.

The house is in a fantastic location for those of us who like the Coral Bay side of the island. We had an almost constant breeze, keeping any bugs away. We are early risers, in the morning sunrise rise was truly breathtaking. The added bonus of kayaks to explore the bay were a treat for our crew. The house manager did a good job showing us what we needed to know about the house, and sharing some history of the house and of the island. We were very happy to be there, and to call it home for the week.
Staying at Sweet Wind was such an interesting and enjoyable experience. You won’t find better views! This place is huge and could easily accommodate multiple families. The pool, decor, garden, kitchen…everything was great! Steve, the caretaker, was very friendly and helpful. We had a couple of kayaking adventures in the protected cove right below the place. Great wildlife all around. This was our first trip to St. John and has us already planning for our return trip!
Perfect and charming island property. Exemplifies my idea of the charm which has made St John a favorite destination. Simple, clean and convenient to the things our family loves about St John.
Sweet wind is the perfect location for us. Close to great snorkeling and Coral Bay but very quiet. Nice view and easy driveway. Kitchen is well equipped and we cooked dinner for 6 most nights. Nina is a good host, very responsive and flexible with check in time. We’ll be nack
Great Location, Awesome View for those wanting to get away!
Our couples were able to enjoy the isolation, views and the breezes of Hurricane Hole, while having access to the North Beaches with a short drive. Kayaking and snorkeling are a must with relaxation on the decks at any time of the day.
My two sons and I visited for a summer getaway. We loved the relative seclusion of the property and the views were simply amazing. The full moon over Hurricane Hole was amazing!
Great stay at Sweet Wind! Comfortable villa with an amazing view!
Nina was an excellent host! Super easy to communicate with and very accomodating. We would highly recommend this villa if you want to stay in Coral Bay!

LOVE! Plenty of room, Beautiful Views and Very Clean! Looking forward to next year rental HERE!
Beautiful, clean and roomy! Constant breeze, beautiful views and loved the kayaking. Full kitchen available with extras if needed. Ms. Nina very helpful and close by for any needs.
Perfect for a large group. Every room had a view of the water. Felt like home with wonderful artistic touches and art. Always a sweet breeze. Well stocked kitchen. Nina was always happy to answer our questions. A perfect island retreat!
My family had a wonderful stay at Sweet Winds. Amazing location just past Coral Bay with stunning views of Hirricane Hole out past East End and to the BVIs. Stunning sunrises from your room and the patios. Nina, your host, is incredibly helpful and very engaged. Any texts received immediate and helpful responses. If you love dogs, you'll love Toby, who keeps a great watch over the property and the guests. We absolutely loved our stay and will be back!
My family and I spent a week at SweetWinds and were delighted with the magnificent views, the peacefulness of the east side of St. John, proximity to excellent dining options (especially Rhumline and Skinny Legs) and beaches (especially Hansen Bay which is a must-do). The refreshing breeze up on the hill and the incredible stars were extra touches that contributed to the extraordinary natural beauty of the home.

Most definitely
This place was simply amazing. It was perfect for my wife and I to stay at. The views were amazing, the areas was absurdly quiet, the location was so close to everything but felt very far away from people, and Nina was super helpful. I could not recommend this place higher. We are already working to get friends to join us next year!

This property has some of the best views of the east end! We had a great stay. It’s a steep driveway but that’s the reason for the great views of Hurricane hole. The breeze was so nice. Sunrise was always worth the early rise. I was impressed with the unique details of the tile work in the bathrooms and the artwork throughout the property. It was nice coming home after daylight and seeing Tov watching over the property as we pulled in. He’s is a great watchdog. We had a great stay. Thank You !

It was great having you all here, hope to see you again some day
Myself and my three sons (over 40 ) and their significant others spent 6 days at Sweet Winds. We all agreed that we wouldn’t have changed one thing about our vacation. Sweet Winds provided a wonderful place for us to all enjoy each others company as well relax and enjoy nature at it’s best. The beaches and coral reefs that provided magnificent snorkeling opportunities were a daily adventure. There were many nearby restaurants and markets. We mostly enjoyed cooking fresh fish every night from a local market. Nina was a great host and readily available . We all look forward to coming back .
We spent an ideal week at this gorgeous spot just east of Coral Bay. Most nights we enjoyed dinner on the deck with moonlight spilling out over the bay. The three bedroom suites were private and comfortable with great beds, sheets, each with a sunrise/water view. Easy to walk down to the water to kayak, or a little further for the easy hike to Brown Bay. Ditto for dinner or groceries in Coral Bay. A quick 10-15 min drive to Salt Pond or Maho Bay. It is a great house and we would love to stay there again. Thanks Nina and Steve for being such nice hosts!

It was great meeting you all and hope to see you again!
The views are beautiful and it is very relaxing. the house was clean and had everything we needed. Very laid back atmosphere. The grounds themselves could use a little maintenance behind the house and entering the pool area, yet that is the island life and acceptable as island living. Nina was great and available when needed. Thank you Nina for allowing us to love your home! It was easy to get to and close to everything we needed! Beautiful beaches, views, and the landscapers ( Donkeys & Goats ) made the experience a lasting memory and blast. Would do it again in a heart beat!

It was great having you all here at Sweet Wind. Thanks, Nina.
I imagined trying this adventure with my husband, (3 children in their 20’s), & myself for over 10 years. The pandemic, among other things, kept us from booking it until now. This property is every bit as lovely as the photos show it to be. It was clean, well-appointed, & the views are gorgeous. Any questions or assistance (e.g, switching out tank for the grill) were addressed within minutes, which was very impressive. They also provided great advice on beaches, snorkeling, & hiking options. We’re already dreaming of a return. We highly recommend this rental!

We loved having you guys! We can't wait to see you again. Tell Mike he better keep practicing at the slide guitar and I can't wait to talk art with you guys again.
Thanks so much for taking good care of the villa
Nina’s property was nothing short of amazing! It had all the comforts of home, and she had everything we could think of and/or need. And the VIEW.. WOW. It was so beautiful it felt like a dream- just like the pictures. We loved how each room had its own entrance and the outdoor showers were the coolest addition. She was so easy to get a hold of with any issues (not that we had any). And her beach and restaurants recommendations were so helpful. Her sweet pups were the cutest welcoming committee. It was also super close (20 min or less) to all the best beaches on the island. This is not the place to stay at if you’re wanting luxury/are particular about noises. but it IS perfect if you want a comfortable home base for enjoying the beaches and the views. If we return to the island someday we will 100% be booking again.

About the host

I feel so lucky to live here in beautiful Hurricane Hole. I am a painter and a musician. I use oils, pastels and watercolours and mostly paint boats and sea monsters .I enjoy playing the mandolin, banjo and slide guitar. I commercially fished for salmon, halibut and black cod, and had a 36' troller for most of my life out of Sitka Alaska. I used to come here for the winter to get out of Alaska, and build places for myself and family. I've lived in several parts around Coral Bay, and I think this is the best place to live on St John.
Why they chose this property
Sweet Wind is just above Hurricane Hole in the National Park and overlooks Coral Reef National Monument. Boats can not overnight moor in the Coral Reef Nat. Monument and there are almost no other houses in view. Park trailheads are a short walk away, and It's very quiet and peaceful here, the view is amazing, and still close to town. The snorkeling and kayaking available here at Sweet Wind in Hurricane Hole make this a special place for outdoor enthusiasts.
What makes this property unique
The house is a West Indian style with hip roofs, three pods with private decks between, with greenheart floors, cyprus wainscoting and antique Caribbean furniture. The full kitchen has beautiful antique caribbean style purple heart cabinets with stone countertops. Open the back kitchen door and there is a lovely grotto, with a gas barbeque and a potted garden full of herbs herbs and spices. The villa affords great views and privacy. The views from most every room feel like you are floating over the ocean, all you see is water and Nat. park land. It is breathtaking and amazingly private. You hear no noise from the bands in Coral Bay.
