We loved our stay- the property was perfect for our ladies weekend. We loved the location and the house was set up so nicely. The host was great, letting us know about building fences in the area. We would love to come back again!
The place was great, very clean, plenty of amenities (kitchen items, towels, soaps, etc.) and we had an absolute blast there. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone. The only two slight things I might mention that weren't great were the fact that there was a property manager staying in the apartment below us for part of our time there that we had not been told would be there. And when my girlfriend went to take a bath on our first night, we ran out of hot water before the tub was even half full. But those were minor things. Overall, it was a great experience.
Yours was just the type of experience we are hoping our guests will have. Thank you for describing it all so well. Please come again in the summer. It will be a whole new experience.
Amazing Retreat! We loved staying at this property. Beautiful views in a very remote, peaceful setting. The host was friendly and communicated well. The driving directions were clear and the check in process was seamless. There were numerous amenities, more than I typically see at vacation rental. We also really enjoyed the decor of the house. We would highly recommend this place! Thanks for sharing your home with us.
Everything was great except for the coffee pot (see attached pic). Someone left the grounds in the pot and it began to mold. Needless to say, we used the Keurig quite a bit. We emptied the coffee pot and put it in the dishwasher. We loved the house and the views! Thank you!
We had a wonderful time at the property. A wonderful home with all you could need in a beautiful remote location. It is peaceful, serene and beautiful.

Very kind words. Thank you. We’re so glad you could stay longer when eastern weather turned rotten! Come back again in the summer. June and July are the best!

It’s nice to see the place is working out well for the big families. We are gradually finding more ways to make it more enjoyable for everyone. Thank you for coming and we do hope you’ll pass through again, especially in warm weather!
We had an amazing stay here, the house is beautiful and the views are breathtaking! The owner was so easy to work with and a pleasure to chat with during our communications.Be sure to read the welcome book to the end, it gives a great history of the home and family.Thank you so very much for sharing your home!
Very unique and beautiful property. If you love being in the midst of nature and wildlife, stunning scenery, and solitude, this is the place for you. This is truly your "home on the range, where the deer and the antelope roam". We saw both regularly, right from the porch of the house. Full large house at your disposal; exceptionally well equipped kitchen; with everything you might want including good internet connection. Judson is a great and responsive host. We honestly didn't want to leave--wished we had booked for more days.
We made it back for a second amazing stay at this great piece of beautiful Montana. You absolutely cannot beat the views and the night sky without any city lights, it is just stunning! We stayed with our whole family and loved it again! We hope to go back again next year!

I’m so glad you enjoyed it. Next time schedule some relaxation. You folks were busy! Thank you for visiting.
The home retains all the charm of the original ranch. A living museum of a simpler times. Great location to recharge, sit on the porch and watch the deer and pronghorns roam.

Very kind. Thank you. It is like a museum you can experience! And we hope to keep improving it over the rest of the year. It’s been a lot of fun.
The Shepherd's Retreat is out in the middle of nowhere, just the way we wanted it! The gravel road was county maintained and in good condition, we had no trouble getting our van in. We stayed four days and drove into Livingston for lunch at the Engine Room one day and enjoyed a delicious deep dish Chicago style pizza! We saw numerous herds of antelope during our drive in and out to The Shepherd's Retreat and we saw an abundance of mule deer, including nice bucks, many of which hung around the house enjoying the green lawn. We also saw a glimpse of a pair of Golden eagles! The beds were very comfortable. The kitchen very well stocked. The communication with our hosts wonderful and they responded quickly. They even helped us out of a couple of jams having nothing to do with their beautiful place. They went above and beyond and we are truly grateful!
We had the best time staying at The Shepherds Retreat! It is a beautiful home in a beautiful location. Everything we needed was included. The house is decorated beautifully. The beds were super comfortable and it was so peaceful. The caretaker was so kind and helpful! We loved every minute and would recommend staying here. Thank you!
Everything about this property was wonderful. A true gem. We would absolutely stay here, again. A wonderful experience! 🙏

In Montana, we pray for snow and we pray for rain. I hate to lose the star on your rating, but the whole state must have moisture and we’ve had it this year in abundance. Maybe a few more rough roads and a few less wildfires this year. Peace and serenity are at the end of the road and the county will get caught up. My dad talked about hauling sheep in the back of a Model A Ford before they put gravel on the road. That’s a rough ride indeed. Thank you for being our guest.
The number of times we have returned (many) is a testament to true joy of this remote Montana Ranch. All our needs are available at the ranch, but in the rare instance that something special is needed, Judson our Host is very responsive.
We will continue to make the Ranch our second home.

Always so happy to see you folks. Guests like you are part of why we enjoy doing this. And you get such great photos. I appreciate them all and you both as well.
We travelled from Central NY to Montana for a friend’s wedding. We were wanting a mountain experience and The Shepard Retreat was exactly that. We loved its remote location and ability to “unplug” and enjoy the views. From coffee on the porch at sunrise to evening sunsets on the back deck, just breathtaking views in all directions. The kitchen was well stocked and the house had everything we needed. If we ever come back to Montana in the future, this spot will be at the top of our list!

We love to hear about a great experience from those who appreciate a unique place like this. Thank you for coming to visit!
I don’t even know where so start- if you are considering this property, just book it. You will not be disappointed. We were here for MSU graduation, 60th birthday, and kicking cancer’s butt. The property is magical and soul soothing. Comfy beds and well equipped kitchen. And the views- so much history inside and out. Book now!
Great place to stay to get out of town and enjoy rustic setting and peace and quiet. My family enjoyed themselves greatly while I was hunting and in and out. Host was very quick to respond and even brought a bunch of games for the kids during a storm weekend. Property caretaker does live in apartment below if need arises for anything. Overall a great stay-be prepared for rough road out to property but all part of the experience.

Great guests. We appreciated the family coming to stay at the Retreat and hope they come again next hunting season!
Judson worked with us from the very first communication to the very last. He coordinated scheduling the Sheperd’s Nook so our group of hunters had the entire place to ourselves.
There was plenty of room to relax after a day of hunting. Mule deer, Whitetail and Antelope were seen daily on the drive into the property. A couple of coyotes crossed our paths as well.
We hope to return next year!

We were so happy to host Lionel and the crew. I love that some guests help us on our learning journey to be a great site. Thanks to all of you!
Pictures don’t do it justice. Amazing get away with amazing people. The owners are extremely accommodating and caring. They answer any questions and have a magnificent property. The caretakers Frank and Meg are helpful as can be and they help with anything. They stay to themselves but are there when you have a question. My wife said this was probably the best Christmas she’s had. 100 out of 10 recommend this place. You won’t be disappointed.

Thank you so much for the kind words. It does mean so much to us to hear it because we feel the same enjoyment when we are there. Montana is beautiful in the winter too, and the area has much to offer. It was wonderful to have you!
Met the family at the Shepards Retreat for three nights. My wife, two adult boys, a girlfriend and a dog who all had an amazing experience. The only wildlife we didn’t see was a moose, but everything else was around, doing their thing (including bear). Check in was a breeze, the host communicated and was welcoming and the retreat had everything you needed.
I would strongly recommend the retreat for those that want to take a break, get away from it all, spend quality time with family or just want to relax. Nothing better than sitting on the porches in the morning with your coffee and binoculars looking for your “neighbors”. We will be back. Thanks for the experience.

It sounds like you had an ideal experience. Thank you for all the kind words. We love that front porch in the mornings and evenings. It’s our favorite place to be. And the bear was back to visit after you left too!
Thank you for staying at the Shepherd’s Retreat. We hope to see you again!
About the host
Hosted by Judson Gilbert
I was born in Livingston, MT, back in the dark ages. Seems like it as I get older. I've lived in Colorado, Wyoming, New Hampshire, and Vermont. My brother, sister and I own The Shepherd's Retreat, and we got it from our parents. We do our best to honor and respect the hard work they did to build such a great house.
Why they chose this property
This land was chosen for us in 1940 by our grandparents. They ran sheep on these hillsides for almost two decades before switching to cows.
What makes this property unique
Our wide-open space inside the house is just like the open prairie out side. Lots of room! My parents were collectors and the house is like a history and art museum all wrapped into one.
