Absolute Perfection
Love pretty much everything about this charming, wonderful house. The host was very kind & communicative, finding & getting into the place was a breeze, and the location was beautiful- an older, quiet neighborhood with huge trees and lovely old homes - but literally 5 minutes away from anything you could ever want. The house is quirky with a very unique setup and lots of squeaky floors. But it was appointed with anything you could possibly need for a little getaway. From a sauna, to an excellent array of music and musical instruments, to very comfortable beds & bedding, it was really just perfect. I can't say enough nice things. The tiny considerations that the host makes, from helpful but not obnoxious notes everywhere, to a fantastic selection of teas, a rice cooker... really anything you can think of and might need. They even left us apples & nuts to enjoy, as well as small cartons of milk and half & half for our coffee. What a charming, lovely, PERFECT place.

Host profile image
Your host, Stuart MacLean Ramsay, was born and raised in the Highlands of Scotland, and emigrated to America when he was 21. He discovered Portland over 30 years ago and moved here to create and manage the BridgePort Brewpub, Oregon’s first craft brewery. (Prior to this, he managed North America’s first brewpub, in Washington state.) Stuart has been brewing, writing and educating about craft beer and whisky ever since, and is the owner of Whiskyback Brewing, a family of craft beers designed to compliment different styles of whisky) Regarded as a world expert on whisky, he is a published author, has written numerous articles on spirits and beer for the likes of Whisky Magazine, the Malt Advocate, Cigar Aficionado and the Portland Oregonian. He has his own whisky school – Ramsay’s Dram Academy of Whisky and is a Kentucky Colonel and a Keeper of the Quaich!

Stuart was named the “Best Person to Drink with in Portland” by the Willamette Week, a local newspaper. He can host a private whisky (and beer!) education class in the home while you are visiting; ask him for the details.

Why they chose this property

It's your home away from home. Your host has spent over 30 years in the hospitality world, including the creation and management of BridePort Brewpub in Portland, an iconic gathering place at the first craft brewery in Oregon.
The house is just two blocks from Division Street, Portland's best thoroughfare for food and drink, and three blocks from the Clinton Street corner, another hotspot for the best Portland has in terms of food and drink. Street parking is plentiful and the neighborhood is safe and walkable.
The John Barleycorn Home is filled with history and happy vibes, plentiful rooms and spaces to gather in, or just chill, books, music, art, and a fully equipped kitchen.

What makes this property unique

Your host is publishing "The Portland Companion," An Eclectic Guide for Locals & Visitors. Portland's best restaurants, bars, shops, hikes etc. are in this guide. Your host can
steer you to a unique experience in Portland and nearby destinations such as the Willamette Valley, Columbia Gorge and Oregon Coast.
A whisky expert, published author and owner of the oldest whisky school in the world, your host is available for private, customized whisky tastings and classes.
The John Barleycorn Home has an extensive (free! ) library, specializing in books about Scotland, the Pacific Northwest, Scotch Whisky, Bourbon Whiskey & Kentucky, Craft beer, Indigenous culture, general fiction and non-fiction.
And it's the only short-term rental with a wooden spurtle, an implement used to remove the lumps in Scottish porridge. (The porridge is complimentary.)
