Turning Point is located in the quiet, picturesque, family-friendly Brigands' Bay neighborhood, which has scenic views, gnarled old live oak trees, Pamlico Sound access, and is perfect for walkers, runners, bikers, kayakers, and kids.
You'll have plenty of space to relax at Turning Point! We don’t have any fancy stuff -- no hot tub, pool, game room, home theater, or video library. We do have a comfortable, homey, well-maintained, and clean Hatteras beach cottage that is perfect for your family vacation! And lots of books to enjoy while you're here! The rooms are large, and the furnishings are tasteful. You won’t feel crowded here. We cater to folks who want to come hang out, enjoy, and explore the beach, the sound, the neighborhood, and all the adventure this special island has to offer.
The large great room has sliding glass doors that open onto a waterfront deck and onto a furnished screened porch. It has a smart TV with cable and Wi-Fi service, as well as shelves of books, games, and jigsaw puzzles.
The well-equipped kitchen has ample counter, cabinet, and pantry space, a spacious island, and is very well stocked with everything you will need for your stay. The dining room table has seating for 8 and opens onto the screened porch which has a picnic table for 6 - 8, plus extra seating. There are also 3 bar stools at the island in the kitchen.
There are three roomy bedrooms and two full baths. The master bedroom (queen bed, TV) and bath are downstairs. The two bedrooms upstairs open onto a balcony that overlooks the family room. One bedroom has a queen bed and pullout sofa, the other bedroom has a queen bed, single loft bed, and a set of bunk beds. There is a large jack-and-jill bathroom. Upstairs and downstairs you will find a fire escape ladder and a box fan in the bedroom closets.
You can fish and crab from the dock on the canal, with its fish-cleaning table and bench. Tie up your boat at the dock and have access to the Pamlico Sound for more fishing, crabbing, and clamming, or just exploring the shore. You'll love the two 2-person kayaks for exploring the Pamlico Sound, and four bikes for exploring the neighborhood by street.
We take pride in maintaining our home and ensure extensive cleaning protocols in place. Posted rates include cleaning, bed linens, and bath towels - no extra fees! We are a True Rental By Owner (no link to a property management company with extra fees). Feel free to contact me if you have any questions about the home.

And, if you're still sticking with reading this, here are a few recent comments from our Guest Book over the years!
The Garners "This was our third visit to Turning Point...You can't beat the "flavor" of this house for OBX. Big thanks to Kathleen for carrying on the rental of this special place. so many family memories have been made here."
The Marsans (Michigan) "We wanted a warm, sunny, relaxing beach vacation, and Hatteras Island delivered! We were happy to splash in the ocean waves and spend evenings relaxing and reading. Turning Point was a great location, had everything we needed and then some. Coming from up north, we loved getting a flavor of the Carolina coast."
The Collins "What a delightful week at Turning Point! In five years, we have been here (Hatteras) nine times, and five times at Turning Point. We return year after year wondering why it is that these vacations leave us so much more fulfilled than any other exotic or remote place we have ever been to (including Virgin Islands and Antigua)!"
The Jernigans (NC) We've had a fun week here at Turning Point! We have been coming to the Outer Banks since we were children, but this is the first time staying south on Hatteras Island, We enjoyed the slower pace and less crowded beaches and highway. Our four boys (ages 6 - 13) thoroughly enjoyed the dock out back ... and the beach was great. The cottage was very roomy and well-equipped."
The O'Rourkes "We loved your house, everything we needed was here! We kayaked, biked, bbq'd, relaxed, read all the books on the Outer Banks. Turning Point is perfect for living life in the slow lane, or as you say yourself, "Island Time." Turning Point feels like a home, not a rental."
The Harshes, (NC) "This is our second year vacationing in Hatteras and this house. We totally loved the serenity of the neighborhood, friendliness of the people, and great accommodations. The house offered everything we needed."

Great home, clean and comfortable. The kitchen, master bedroom, living room, and porches are all on the first floor minimizing going up and down stairs. Kitchen is well stocked with cooking utensils, kayaks and bikes are a nice extra. Nice quite neighborhood. Loved being on a wide canal. Our host was very nice, quickly responded to questions while we were searching for a place and after we arrived. Close to some good restaurants, for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Check out the Orange Blossom Bakery & Cafe for breakfast.
This was our first time in the Outer Banks and we absolutely loved it! My boyfriend and my son woke up every morning to fish off the dock and the views were amazing. We're definitely going to go back, hopefully every year!
The house was impeccably clean upon our arrival. It is very spacious and comfortable, well suited for our family of 5. We particularly enjoyed the covered patio in the evening. Very useful information provided by our host concerning grocery stores, coffee shops and where to buy fresh seafood. Our stay was cut short due to hurricane Erin. Our host was very supportive and communicated all the information she could get to help us in this situation.
The home was a great location for boaters. It was clean and well kept. It was a great location to restaurants, ice cream shop, tackle shops and seafood markets. Bruxton seafood is awesome! Chilly Hanks was a daily ice cream adventure! Boat rental was charlies for a Carolina skiff delivered to the Scotch Bonnet marina for us to use and tie to the dock for the week. The home owners checked on us often and were available for questions. Would recommend this vacation rental!
We enjoyed our stay! The property was just as advertised. Everything was clean! The kitchen was well stocked with cookware and everything we needed, as we cooked all our meals on site. Loved the screened in porch and the dock!
Kathleen has done everything to ensure a seamless stay. Much appreciated! The house has a great floorplan, good location, quiet neighborhood and easy to get to grocery stores, ferry at Hatteras, restaurants, etc. Stay at home or venture out - the best of both worlds. The canal side is a plus and it's a short drive to public beach access (Frisco). Booking online can always be a hit or miss but this property checks all boxes. We're so thankful for finding the listing. It's tempting to want to explore other locations but after years of staying in different places on the island as a whole, Frisco is the best locale for us. We will certainly book again in the future. Thanks, Kathleen!

We are so glad you enjoyed our home and your vacation on Hatteras Island! We would love to host you again anytime!
The location was great. All the comforts of home. Very clean and organized. Communication with the owner, Kathaleen, was great. Kathaleen had checked in with us shortly after we arrived to make sure everything was good. We were very appreciative of her for checking in. Looking for a place to kick back and relax, this is definitely the place. We enjoyed sitting out on the deck each morning and evening watching the Beautiful sunrises and sunsets. The weather was perfect. We utilized the bicycles and kayaks at the property to view the Bay Area.
Thank you again Kathaleen for allowing us to stay at your beautiful property. We had an awesome vacation

Lovely home in Frisco North Carolina
This home was terrific and Katherine was very easy to work with. The house is on stilts so not a good choice for disabled or people with difficulty with many stairs BUT that is true of virtually all Outerbanks homes. This house is well located and very clean and well maintained. It’s in a terrific location with easy access to water and exploring the national seashore and sound.
It is a great house for two couples and four kids with plenty of room for all.
Neighborhood is very nice for walking as well.
We enjoyed sitting on the deck listening to all the birds and watching all the activity along the canal.
We recommend this home as a great spot on Hatteras
Special note: we were a bit disappointed that no soap, dishwashing, sponges, laundry detergent or cleaning products were included so be sure to purchase them or bring along. Also, we bought towels rather than rent from Shore Details since bath towels washcloths and hand towels are not included either.
Enjoy

Thank you for your constructive feedback! We are so glad you enjoyed your stay. We have made some adjustments to include some soap and cleaning products moving forward. For some reason, that is not standard in many Hatteras rental homes, so we weren't used to it and honestly had not thought about it! But clearly, that is something that will benefit future guests and we are happy to do so.

STILL LOVE THIS PLACE!
My husband and I have stayed at Turning Point for several years, spending two weeks each in the spring and the fall. The house, located in a quiet residential neighborhood, is well maintained and clean. The kitchen is equipped with just about everything you could possibly want or need. The 'beachy' decor, multiple sliding glass doors, and great room with its high ceiling make this a very bright, airy and attractive house. There's a large deck overlooking the canal, a screened-in porch, numerous board games and shelves of books (both fiction and non-fiction) for your enjoyment. There's lots of empty drawer/cabinet/closet space to store all your belongings. The dock on the canal and use of a kayak are added bonuses with this rental.
We've been vacationing on Hatteras Island in various locations for over 25 years and Frisco has become one of our favorite areas. We especially appreciate the friendly service and local fishing tips and advice from the people at Bob's Frisco Tackle and Convenience just south on Rt. 12. My husband is a surf fisherman and uses Ramps 49 in Frisco and 55 in Hatteras Village to drive onto the beach. Both of these areas also have parking areas and walkways to the beach if you don't have an ORV permit.
The owner, Kathleen, is the daughter of the original owner and it’s a pleasure to work with her just as it was with her mother. We look forward to continuing to stay at Turning Point in the future.

Thank you Barbara! So glad you and Tom are still frequent travelers to Hatteras and to Turning Point!
From the start the owner of the property was in contact with us she was extremely easy to work wit. The house is awesome and brigands bay is a perfect area for biking and water sports. The house had everything you need…we brought things we didn’t need due to the thoughtfulness of the owners and their consideration for guests. From kayaks to pots to steam crabs there was pretty much all we needed. I hope to be back next year and we look forward to then.
Been visiting the island for decades and this house had everything we needed. Very cool canal area that was perfect for walks, jogs and bike rides. Everyone looked forward to the outside shower after the beach every evening and then drinks on the deck overlooking a super quiet canal. It was a very nice trip!
If you’re looking for a 3 bed 2 bath in Hatteras this place is great. Very nice neighborhood, outdoor equipment included, canal front and spacious common areas were my favorite aspects. The house was super clean and the kitchen has everything you need. And the host was great with communication, even sending weather alerts ahead of our trip. 10/10.

So glad you all enjoyed the house, the neighborhood, and your trip, Shawn! It was a pleasure hosting you all.
I only gave 4 stars for accuracy of online listing because the house was nicer than we expected based on some of the photographs. I think the listing doesn’t totally do it justice. The house was very clean, and well maintained.

The perfect rental to enjoy the most gorgeous area of the Outer Banks
This property is located on a quiet and charming residential area, with direct access to the Sound. We made use of the kayaks and enjoyed some paddling at sunset and sunrise. The kitchen has everything we needed as we cooked all our meals. Well-stocked supermarkets are only 15 or 20 minutes away and very reasonably priced. The only downside is that the closest beaches are several miles away and a car is necessary to get there. Finally, the owner is incredibly friendly and shows genuine interest in her guests enjoying their stay, as if we were family or friends!
We had a great and relaxing time here. We kayaked, rode bikes and enjoyed visiting lighthouses in the area. We also took some nice sunset walks along the beach. This is a great location if you want to enjoy some true peace and quiet. Can't wait to come back !

About the host
Hosted by Kathleen Andres
Our mother purchased property in Brigands' Bay in 1983 after vacationing there annually for a decade and visiting a time or two while growing up. She built Turning Point in 1990 and lived here for 27 years. She passed away suddenly in March 2017, so my brother and I are now maintaining the home we have grown to love. She lived a few houses down the street and loved sharing her home and the island with visitors. Here is her story.
In December, 1989, just before a record-breaking blizzard at the seashore, the pilings for the house were put in. The cottage was completed in March, 1990. I had been coming to Hatteras Island since the mid-'70s, since my two children were youngsters. I'd always wanted a house here and now I had one. It's beautiful, and I'm still proud of it. Ironically, I have never lived in it. The year after the cottage was completed, I had a real Turning Point in my life. I left my job as an editor at a big city newspaper in Louisville, Ky., got married to a Hatteras islander, and moved to the seashore. I live on the same street as Turning Point in my husband's house. My two children who grew up knowing nothing but Hatteras beach vacations are now adults and the summers at Hatteras tradition continues with my nine grandchildren, as well as my brother and sister and their children and grandchildren. They love Hatteras and Brigands' Bay just as much as their grandmother and parents. We have built many family memories here.
Why they chose this property
Brigands' Bay is one of Hatteras Island's premier waterfront neighborhoods. It is a mixture of permanent residents and rental homes, some very large and elegant, some quaint and cozy. The gnarled live oaks (search the legend of the Cora Tree!) and collection of canals that spill into the beautiful Pamlico Sound make it the ideal home base as your family enjoys all that Hatteras has to offer. It is located in Frisco, one of seven villages on the island and right in the middle of the lovely Cape Hatteras National Seashore. You will find easy access to beaches, fishing, the Hatteras charter boat fleet, the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, surfing, windsurfing, hiking trials in the Buxton Woods Maritime Forest, and many other recreational opportunities.
What makes this property unique
Turning Point is located on a picturesque canal with direct access to the Pamlico Sound. You can sit on the bench at the dock and fish and crab or if you have a boat, you can tie it up here and have easy access to the sound for more fishing and crabbing opportunities, clamming, water sports, or just seeing the sights. It's quiet and it's peaceful, the way a Hatteras vacation should be.
