Private Chalet outside Tahoe near Echo Lake, amazing hot tub deck and loft
Rustic but totally renovated private Chalet at Echo Summit nestled in the woods with an amazing hot tub deck and private patio with gas fire pit overlooking the huge Jeffrey pines on the mountain behind the house. Just one half mile from the Pacific Crest Trail, 2 miles from Echo lake and 12 miles from South Lake Tahoe and all it has to offer. For restaurants and shopping its just 4 miles from the town of Meyers with a full service grocery store and many excellent restaurant options. In addition the house was recently totally renovated with new granite countertops, bathrooms (with a great separate shower room), stainless steel appliances, new floors and all new electrical and plumbing.
Stays during snow seasons: The house is in a perfect location for snow sports. It’s just 1 1/2 miles from the entrance to Sierra at Tahoe resort, 12 miles to Heavenly resort or 31 miles to Kirkwood. You can also snowshoe or cross-country ski right out the door and head up the hill behind the house to an overlook of Echo Lake and continue on to Desperation Wilderness. The snow at Echo Summit can be fairly minimal or it can be very heavy. If the calendar shows the house is available to rent, we will make every effort we can to make sure you have access to the house and its adjoining hot tub deck. If access is not possible, we will inform you of that as soon as we can and will offer you a 100% refund. When there is snow on the ground the frontage road in front of the house will be plowed as needed for parking and a path to the front door will be plowed however depending on the amount of snow on the ground and the type of vehicle you have you may need to park in the street and walk through snow for approximately 150 feet to the house.
The snow will be plowed in the morning anytime there is more than 6 inches of snow since the last time it was plowed. However, if it is plowed in the morning and it snows during the day the snow that fell during the day will not be plowed until the following morning. There will be a snow shovel there for you to shovel the small area between the edge of the front entrance deck and the path plowed on the driveway, the snow that has fallen on the walkway from the second floor to the hot tub deck and to shovel around your car as needed. Snow typically falls anywhere from November to April but may still be on the ground in May.

We wanted to be close to our daughter who is working at the city of Berkeley Echo Lake Camp. This was the closest we could get to here that was a rental. Owner was great. Property was as expected. Had everything we needed. Driveway is steep and Highway 50 noise is constant. It’s not the quietest place to stay inside as well if you have teenagers/adults up stairs using the third floor fold out bed. It’s a cabin, not a house. Easy access to South Lake and Echo Lake.
It’s a beautiful spot and a beautifully rustic, updated cabin. We loved getting away from it all with our two young daughters. That said. South Lake Tahoe is still close if you care to pop over for all that it has to offer. During the day we skied at Sierra-at-Tahoe, which is not more than a five minute drive from the house. In the evenings, we happily cooked, enjoyed the hot tub, played games, and assembled a jigsaw puzzle together at the house. The cabin is very spacious, yet intimate. Everyone happily found their own nooks and crannies. Space heaters and cozy blankets kept us warm and cozy. The girls enjoyed playing out in the snow and asked us for a carrot for their snowman’s nose. So much fun and so grateful to Bill for sharing his chalet with our family!! We’ll be back!

Liked: Communication
Disliked: Check-in, location, listing accuracy
The property is located about 100 feet from one of the major highways going in and out of Southlake Tahoe. As a consequence, there is constant and persistent roaring of traffic noise as the cars go by. This is not a peaceful cabin. Also, I was given a code to the lock on the front door via email from VRBO, which said to use the last four digits of my personal phone number. The owner in a text on your website sent me another code for the lock on the front door. I now had two different codes. When I tried the owners code, the lock did not open. I tried the code sent to me by VRBO. It also did not open the lock. So, having driven four hours to the cabin, being unable to enter the cabin, being unable to contact the owner directly, being unable to access your website via phone to get to a source of communication with the owner, we were left standing beside the highway, tired, and dismayed. As a consequence of all this, we had to drive into Southlake Tahoe and secure a room in one of the hotels there so we would at least have a comfortable place to rest and spend the night. The intensity of the traffic noise made us stay in the cabin unattractive so, we decided to drive back home. But we were not able to enter the cabin, we did find a few very cheap and uncomfortable plastic chairs in the back of the cabin, sitting on the dirt where we were able to sit down and try and figure out our next step. Altogether, this was a very unfortunate event, and we would not recommend this cabin.

Michael sent me a message 4 days before check in asking about the check in instructions and code for the door. I told him VRBO would send him instructions but I would send him the code the day before. I sent the code to him the day before check in then the day of check in he messaged me to verify the code I sent was the correct one. I messaged back yes the code I sent was the correct one and explained that there was an issue keeping me from using the last 4 of his phone number. There was no confusion on the code and it is a standard code used many times including the day before he arrived. He then told me his plans changed and he would arrive a day late. I replied that he could stay an extra day if he would like but he didn't respond. I then began to anticipate an issue because of his change of plans. Next day I got a message at 8:43 pm that the code didn't work and the house was 50 feet from the road (its 250 feet and off a side road) and he wanted a refund. As soon as I read it I responded (at 9:03) and told him the code was correct and did work but I had a lock box with a physical key it and gave him my phone number to call me for access to it. He didn't call me, he didn't call my local contact (whose number was out front) he didn't respond to my text (there is good cell service at the house) - his plans changed and he was making absurd statements in an attempt to get a refund. He booked my house months before which kept someone else from renting, so day of refund.

Born in Atlanta but moved to California to explore the many outdoor activities then fell in love with the Sierras and this house was perfect for me.
Why they chose this property
This house is close enough to Tahoe to enjoy all the city has to offer but still very private.
What makes this property unique
Very close to Tahoe and my favorite hike at Echo lake but still very private and your closest neighbors are usually a half mile away. The best part of my house is the hot tub deck I built which is off the second floor. The deck has high ceilings leading up to a 180 degree open area across the back of the deck giving an amazing view of the 200 year old Jeffrey pines towering high on the mountains behind the house.
