About the host
Hosted by Kay

Our family has been hosting for years now. We love it! Our regular guests have become friends, as we've met and talked over the years. Even if we don't meet in person, learning about our guests through our communications is deeply rewarding. I grew up in a farm community where everyone knew everyone, so rural Maine feels like home. I left my native New Zealand with plans to travel widely and after doing that, ended up living in a big city in the US, so after the demands of urban life, it was a joy to find this wonderful log house. It has become a precious retreat for our family. Great neighbors, helpful and friendly. Endless outdoor activities. The Maine culinary and farm cultures are constantly evolving, enhancing the quality of life. We love to stop by the roadside stands for fresh vegetables, fruit, grass-fed beef, home-made organic bread, free range eggs! The farm to table movement just keeps growing in Maine. The local supermarket is great; the local Gifford's ice cream parlor pulls us in; the library selection is as good as the wonderful staff - I could go on, but come and find out for yourself!
Why they chose this property
The moment we saw the house, we loved it! As soon as we stepped inside and saw its charm and excellent design, we knew that this was the special family retreat we had dreamed of. Peace and privacy with super friendly neighbors as well - it's an unbeatable combination. We've been here since 2010 and every year we enjoy it more! Every year we find different hiking trails, meet new people, find more historical and sightseeing spots and even better restaurants and roadside stands.
What makes this property unique
What could be better than breakfast on the deck, watching the early morning mist rise from the water and a string of ducklings following mother to their own breakfast. Then there is the decision on whether to have the canoe-kayak race or go fishing or hike to the top of Mt Blue. If the energy level is not high enough, we could visit one of our favorite antique stores in a quaint river town (there are so many nearby) or zip over to Black Acres for some of their richly flavored steak to grill for dinner, unless everyone wants lobster again. We can do a few lengths out to the swim raft and back, or just stretch out in a lounger on the lawn and read to our hearts content. Tomorrow we will go hiking - or maybe just swing in the hammock and not do too much at all!
