About Headford Headford, some 28 km north of Galway, is the popular angling centre for the eastern shore of Lough Corrib, and Greenfields, some 6.5 km west of the town, is its boating harbour. The town is situated next to the Black River (noted also for its trout angling) which is the county boundary with Mayo.
Headford is also the centre of an area rich in archaeological monuments, ranging from prehistoric burial cairns, Iron Age stone enclosures, early Norman and later castles, to a bewildering array of monastic sites.
Today, the modern cattle mart, although replacing the fairs and markets once held in the town's two squares, ensures the local popularity of this North Galway town.
Headford is twinned with the picturesque town of Le Faouët in Brittany, France.
Places of Interest
Ross Errilly Friary Standing in serene solitude on the South bank of the Black River, just two miles West from the town of Headford in Co. Galway the Franciscan Friary of Ross is recognised by many historians both past and present as the best preserved monastic ruin of its period in Ireland. It was founded in 1349 by the then Archbishop of Tuam Dr. Malachy MacHugh, who was a native of the Headford area and, as it happens, a member of the Franciscan order.
Killursa Killursa is about 1.5 miles west of Headford on the Greenfields road. It is a ruined church set in an extensive graveyard. The ruin measures 70 feet by 24 feet, and it has a gothic pointed doorway, and a large mullioned gothic window, which indicates that the present structure was erected after the Norman invasion, 1169. A wall was built across this church, probably cutting off a section for the officiating clergyman, who had his habitat there. Killursa means the church of St. Fursa whose statue one sees as one enters the graveyard. It was here St. Fursa had the famous visions of the unseen world which grave authors assert inspired Dante to write his “Comedia Divina”.

It’s wonderful to hear you enjoyed the peace and tranquility that this place offers. Ideal for anyone looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of this life and enjoy nature at its best. We hope it also shows, to some degree, how people lived 250 years ago.
Yes, plenty to do for all ages, we went as far as 100km to visit the attractions and villages.

Lovely property, nicely secluded. Comfortable, cosy cottage with modern conveniences (WiFi, television, microwave). Caretaker Eileen was very helpful (including enquiring among the locals if they knew any family history to help my genealogy research. An adorable book has been compiled by the owner’s family outline the history of the cottage.

Clean and comfortable, very much off the beaten path - private and quiet. We enjoyed our stay here.

Delighted you enjoyed your stay. However, when you say "off the beaten path", it depends on what you expect from your holiday! Cong is just 9 miles from the cottage. Here you will find Ashford Castle, The Royal Abbey, Statue of John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara, both stars from 'The Quite Man", which was filmed in a pub in Cong and this pub is still functional. There are walking tours here, Nature and Wildlife tours, Historical and Heritage tours. Plus Boat tours and horseback riding.
Galway City is 20 miles away with it's large shopping area, popular Salthill beach and amusement area.
Croagh Patrick, nicknamed the Reek, 42 miles away. This is a 764 metres mountain and an important site of pilgrimage in County Mayo.
Aillwee Caves in Co. Clare is 43 miles away.
Cliffs of Moor, Co Clare is 55miles away.
Connemara National Park, Mweelin, Letterfrack, Co. Galway, is 50 miles away.
I have but listed a few, the list is inexhaustible.
Evelyn, the caretaker is always available with more suggestions.
Lovely quaint cottage not too far from Galway. We stayed here for our base on the west coast and did day trips from here.

Thank you Carol for your review. We are so pleased to hear that you enjoyed your time at our cottage. It gives you an idea of the Ireland of long ago. Not many of these cottages exist in Ireland today. Hope we will see you again in the future.
Charming, traditional cottage with everything you need for a good stay. Warm and clean, and the contact with the property manager was excellent.

Quiet man cottage
A peaceful and tranquil setting
We almost expected John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara to greet us when we arrived.
An ideal centre for seeing all the "tourist places" but secluded for a peaceful, quiet rest.

Location was great et it suited all our needs. We really enjoyed the time we spent there.
Easy contact with host & caretaker.
It would be nice to have a more modern shower (lack of pressure), but it's just a small detail.

Week in Galway
Lovely week in a peaceful traditional cottage. Slept well - only darkness, stars and birdsong outside - ate well - Headford has a friendly inn, Anglers' Rest - travelled miles in beautiful countryside - visited interesting places such as spectacular Kylemore Abbey. Recommend the cottage to anyone who wants a contrast to a busy working life.

How lovely to wake up and listen to the birds singing. So delighted you enjoyed it.
We enjoyed our stay at the Mirehill cottage. Small and convenient, vintage look. The photos were accurate, but they showed animals which we never saw, it might be disappointing for kids.

Delighted to hear you enjoyed your stay. Regarding the animals, it depends on the time of the year you’re there and if there’s enough grass in the fields to feed them.
Thank you for choosing our cottage.
The hosts were friendly and helpful from the start, as well as very approachable. They have made a very welcoming, well appointed home away from home, where at the beginning and end of the day, you can comfortably relax and unwind in comfort, with all the facilities you could need. The location is quiet and peaceful in beautiful surroundings, but convenient for travel around Galway.
There was a personalised sense of hospitality to our stay, and we would highly recommend the cottage for a delightful stay.

Thanks Daniel for your lovely review. So pleased the cottage met your expectations and you all enjoyed the peace and tranquility. It’s a great place to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Hope to see you again sometime in the future.
First, the lake view is nowhere to be seen from the cottage.
Further, the wi-fi never worked, and the UK to US electricity converter was fried. Aside from that, the cottage was clean and comfortable, in a bird-filled, idyllic environment.

About the host
Hosted by Eileen Bennett
This is the home where I was born. I left here with my mother after my father's death in 1957. We spent a number of years in the USA.
Upon retirement my mother and step-father returned to the cottage and spent many happy years there. I moved to England, where I currently live. Now there is nothing I love more than returning to relax and enjoy quality time with my little grandson in the home which holds so many happy childhood memories for me.
Why they chose this property
This is a family home. It was built over 200 years ago by the hands of my great, great grandfather in an era where there was no modern machinery. If you were to see it without plaster, no two stones are alike. It was originally thatched and had no running water or electricity. It was occupied by generations of good hard working people, who had very little but had hearts of gold! We have modernised it through the years and choose to rent it as a means to hold on to it as it holds a very precious position in our hearts.
What makes this property unique
There is complete peace and tranquility to be had here. The only noise to be heard is the birds singing on the trees. Peace, perfect peace!
