Lake Champlain Cottage - Private with Amazing Sunsets on Maquam Bay
ABOUT OUR COTTAGE
This slice of heaven on the shores of Lake Champlain sits on the calm waters of Maquam Bay. This cozy cottage provides everything you need to enjoy a lake front retreat in Vermont. Enjoy the sunsets sitting at the campfire and relax on the Adirondack chairs overlooking the Bay. The large, fenced in yard provides plenty of space for relaxation or play (and is great for kids or dogs). The .44 acres is very private with mature trees and bushes lining the property. Watch the sunset over the water with the Adirondack mountains as the backdrop. The ramp provides easy access to the water – step into the shallow waters and cool off. Wildlife is abundant with eagles, herons, egrets, ducks, osprey and more.
Spend the summer, winter, fall or spring on the shores of this Lake Champlain get-away. The cottage itself sleeps six people in two bedrooms (a king bed in the master bedroom and twin bunks in the guest bedroom) plus a sleeper sofa in the living area.
This spot has it all! A front porch, back deck and a patio along the edge of the water all provide great spaces to relax and enjoy the peace of the lake. There is also a wood burning fire pit (wood is provided).
The open living, dining and kitchen area is where you'll spend most of your time when you are not outdoors. Comfortable, cozy furnishings in the living area, a dining table that seats six people and a well-equipped kitchen are all provided to make you feel at home. A gas grill is available for use as well. There is also a full bathroom in the cottage.
An added bonus is the private ramp for easy access to the lake for your kayak or paddle board.
A tandem kayak is included along with a mix of life jackets. We also have several lawn games ready to play. Should you need to move indoors, the cottage comes with games, books and puzzles to enjoy. There are also 2 TV's (one in the living room and one in the master bedroom). High speed wifi internet service is included. Washer/dryer also available.
Bring Fido! Pets are welcome (up to 2 pets upon approval & pet fee applies).
Note: The yard is fenced in with a boundary fence. While it keeps our dog on the property, a determined or small dog can escape. If your dog is prone to running, it might be better to plan additional restraints while on property. In any case, we don't recommend leaving your dog unattended.

Perfect cabin on the lake. Beautiful views. The house had everything we needed for a wonderful vacation. The town of Swanton was lovely with a wonderful restaurant, yummy bakery and access to the rail trails. I'll let the pictures speak for themselves.
Lovely cottage for relaxing and enjoying the sunsets. Close to town restaurants and shops. We took a scenic drive across the channel islands. Recommend Snow Farm Winery for tastings and weekly seasonal concerts.
We enjoyed staying here for a couple of nights while on our way to Montreal. The yard is fully fenced in which was great for our pups, and you can't beat the lake view and evening sunsets! A little pricey for just the two of us, but would stay again with friends and utilize the bunk house.
We hit a few bumps in the road upon arrival, but the stay was great!
Beautiful sunsets. Great place for dogs to run, walk and swim. Has all the amenities you would need. Quiet and friendly neighbors. Would I go back? Yes.
A group of friends stayed at the cottage for two nights and wish we had booked longer! Everything was perfect from the location to the fire pit and bunk house. We will return!
Most disappointing experience. First vacation in 8 years, gift for my birthday. And we were met with up bed wasn’t washed. You could see the wrinkles where two people had laid. Stains, hair and dirt in bed. So gross. Decided to spend night on sleeper couch which left us sore, wasn’t comfortable at all. Shortly after midnight the dogs started to get bothered by something, scratch and biting in the air. My husband went to kitchen to find it infested with flying ants, all over. On our stuff, on ourselves and the dogs. So since we couldn’t sleep anyways we decided to pack our stuff and leave at 3:30 in the morning.

Response from VrboOwner on 9 Jan 2026
We were so dismayed when we heard from Sara about the items she mentions in her review. As is evidenced by our 9.4 rating from the cumulation of 56 reviews, this experience is not what our guests should expect nor the standards of the owners of this cottage. As soon as the owners were informed they went to the cottage the very same day to investigate and addressed all of the issues. Sara also received a full refund of her payment and we assisted her in her communication with Vrbo to ultimately receive a refund of the commission that she paid to Vrbo. Sara received a personal note of apology from the cottage owners. In all, while this was a very disappointing experience the owners acted quickly and did everything they could to remedy the situation and satisfy the guest.
We enjoyed watching the sunsets and kayaking. We made use of the lovely bunkhouse. It was nice to have that extra option. Very cute place in quiet, tree-shaded area.

About the host
Hosted by Cheryl Stein
My husband and I were both born and raised in New York but moved up to Vermont to raise our kids. We love it up here and when we found this cottage, we fell in love with it. Stress just falls away when we are here - so peaceful and beautiful. Love that we can get work done while still feeling like we are on vacation (thanks to the high speed internet)!
Why they chose this property
This area is beautiful - quiet and the most amazing sunsets we've ever seen. And, yet so close to both the Village of Swanton and St. Albans...close to anything you might need and some fun nights out as well. It really is perfect - just wish we had more time to enjoy it ourselves.
What makes this property unique
This place is so special - a large, flat and private yard yet right on the water with easy access via the boat ramp. Doesn't get much better than that!
