This place was a great fit for our family of 4. It has two bedrooms with queen beds, a good sized living room and a nice screened lanai. The heated pool was nice and warm. The house shares grounds with 4 other duplexes but it's still very quiet. Had the pool to ourselves several times. 10 min walk down a quiet street to the beach. Owners were very nice and had great comms throughout. Only minor con relates to Sanibel itself - as a guest you can't get a parking pass, so if you want to park near the beach, you are limited to 3 locations with parking lots (5/hr) which fill up by late morning. Other reviewers complained about nearby water treatment plant smell but we only noticed it a couple times and it was very minor. Nothing that should stop you!
This is the second time I have stayed here for several months during the winter season, and it's great. Very comfortable home, great heated pool in the complex, beautiful landscaping, and a wonderful screened-in porch. Have already booked for next year!

What a beautiful cottage! Very comfortably furnished with a real beachy feel. Well equipped wirh everything you need for a great stay. Beautifully landscaped, and the heated pool is delightful. I stayed for 10 weeks this winter, and have booked again for next year.

Lovely quiet beach cottage two blocks from several beaches with shared pool. Nearby stores and restaurants. Fully equipped kitchen, decorated nicely, lots of books, movies and DVD player, cable tv, beach toys & beautiful flowers and trees. Loved my stay, will be back!
We loved the Shell Cottage! Perfect size for us and had everything we needed. An easy and pleasant walk to the beach. Really nice quiet area with great neighbors! Plus, this cottage must have been a good luck charm for us! My husband found the elusive Junonia shell during our stay. We have been visiting Sanibel for years and have spent countless hours looking for this rare and special shell. And this was the lucky visit!

Great cottage
This cottage is half a duplex, but we would never have known that there were people staying in the other half. It is in a great location, halfway between out of the way beaches and the main road with shops, etc. The kitchen was small, but had everything we needed. The pool that is shared between a few homes was lovely and there was never anyone else in it when we swam.

Thank you so much for your lovely review of Shell cottage. Hope you come back to Sanibel and stay with us again!

Diane and Dave were thoughtful, and always available for assistance if needed. The property was well appointed and had everything we needed, especially to cook full meals. Only concern, that cannot be controlled by Diane and Dave, was the noxious oder from the waste water treatment center. It can be noticed depending on which way the wind is blowing that day. The treatment plant is just behind the small complex. Smells aside, we had a wonderful visit to Sanibel!

The waste treatment plant rarely has any issues or impacts on this property, they have made significant improvements to the plant and we have only had one complaint in 11 years

Pleasant little cottage
The property was beautiful, no complaints there. The only thing that marred our vacation was the proximity of the property to the island septic plant. Some mornings and evenings the smell was terrible.

The City of Sanibel has done extensive research and found that red drift algae is the cause of the occasional sewage smell that occurs on the island. You can research articles on the web about the red tide and algae caused by water mis-management by the army core of engineers.

Our overall impression of the property was not good. We arrived and were VERY disappointed as we were staying in the back unit of a duplex NOT a cottage as advertised. It was located down the road from what appears to be a water treatment plant and the odor was frequently unpleasant during our stay. The kitchen was adequate for our needs as we only heated water for tea in the morning. We were contacted several times by the owners, but there was no point in complaining to them as they couldn't change the location or the fact we were there and the property was not as advertised. While it has been carefully photographed to look like a cottage and decorated as suc, it was not one. While the people in the other unit were not present our entire stay, we could hear them in the bedrooms in the evening. (They were not loud but could be heard). The beaches were 10 minutes away by car and if we had wanted to stay in a duplex there were ones with direct beach access.

We are sorry this guest had such strong feelings about our property. “Shell Cottage” is our personal moniker for the cute shell decor and fitting description related to the shelling activity that Sanibel Island is known for. It was not meant to be misleading in any way. This is the only complaint of this nature in eleven years
We’re not sure which beach this guest was traveling to, but the closest beach (Nerita) is only a ten minute walk. The building is a two unit property in a historic small development with only 8 units sharing parking, landscaped open space, the Sanibel River, and a recently upgraded pool.

Great location!
We had a fabulous vacation! Sanibel Island is truly paradise. This cute cottage was the perfect launch point for our adventures, as well as a great place to wind down at the end of the day. We swam every day in the pool that we had all to our selves most of the time. The couple times there were others, we made friends— many of which were longer staying visitors in other units. Great family friendly atmosphere.
We enjoyed using the bikes and wagon to load up and pedal down to the beach. Restaurants were also close by to ride to!
The weather was beautiful!
We hope to get back for another vacation soon!!
The cottage has comfy furniture and a nice large tv. There is a clean, new mattress on queen bed that we used. The shower has good pressure and the kitchen has all the utensils you might need as well as a clean, full-size fridge. We took advantage of the lovely heated pool a few times.
The location is within biking distance of good restaurants and an easy walk to a nice, free beach. Be sure to visit Island Cow and Traders, 2 of the best restaurants on the island!
Unfortunately, I am sensitive to smells and there is a sewage treatment plant at the end of the road and the odor was unpleasant for half of our stay; but the rest of time, I enjoyed the Adirondack chair on the front porch .

The city of Sanibel has done extensive research on the occasional sewer smells and has found that it is caused by red drift algae. Also called the red tide. You can research articles about this on the web. Fortunately it is rare but can occur on Sanibel.
Best regards, Diane
Property was as advertised. Just redone after the hurricane. In a very quiet area. Limited traffic. Nice grounds. House is small, but ideal for what we needed and wanted. A long block from the beach, but very doable for just a short walk.
Sanibel still rebuilding and not a lot open. This as of Nov. 18. But there are work crews everywhere helping the process.
Great communication between us and the owners, before, during, and after our stay. Nice to know.
Short answer. Would I stay here again? Yes.

Thank you Robert. We appreciate it. We are fixing a couple of things and will get you that check for the toaster.:)
We loved our week on Sanibel at the adorable Shell Cottage in a lovely neighborhood within a short walking distance to the beach. It had been completely renovated after Hurricane Ian so everything looked fresh and new with a flair. We spent lots of time on the front screened lanai which felt very private because of the landscaping. Also there was a winding path of shells going to a back raised deck leading to the side door which was pretty with its flowers, trees, and some orchids facing a window. All the seating was very comfortable, inside and out, and the kitchenette was quite workable. There were only 3 things we wish had been supplied - a workable toaster (the lever wouldn't be pushed all the way down the slots - it was a cheap toaster), an easily workable light above the sink and stove - there was one but was very hard to turn on and off, and paper towels. Oh - and we couldn't find a small pot for boiling eggs in - only a very large one. Other than that, everything was perfect, and we would gladly stay there again next March, if available.

This place was not for us
My husband and I rented this cottage for 9 days to celebrate our anniversary . We arrived in the late afternoon and left the next morning. I realize there are a lot of fabulous reviews about the space (which is why we reserved it), but the minuses definitely outweighed the pluses for us. First of all, as people who love to cook our own food (which is one of the reasons why we use vrbo, there was virtually NO place to put our groceries in the kitchen. Not even one shelf in the cabinet was available for us. The kitchen is tiny and cramped, and if. you are a family of more than 2, you are going to be banging into each other and wondering where to sit. There were signs on the walls and refrigerators instructing us to DO NOT turn off the security light, DO NOT open the windows (in the "welcome" book), plus a plethora of other rules telling us what we should not do. The security light was bright and supposedly needed to stay on as a deterrent so critters wouldn't mess with the garden. In all the. years we've stayed in vrbo's (and as a touring musician, I can tell. you it has been many), we've never been in a place where we couldn't open the windows or turn off lights. And you were not allowed to move the furniture on the porch to make it more comfortable. The bedrooms are small and the owners belongings are secured in closets. You feel like you are living with them, even though they are not there. I tried sleeping in the bed and felt like I was suffocating so I spent a sleepless night on the couch with the security light. The next morning my husband and I found another place, tidied up after ourselves and left. I reached out to the owner to let him know and requested that he consider giving us a refund or at least partial refund (something would have been nice!) as a good faith, good customer service gesture. I explained why we left and he denied that there were signs and told us well, we could have opened the windows and turned off the lights. Apparently, they'd had problems in the past. He was rude and unpleasant and I would never, never treat a customer this way in my business. We went to another location and had an amazing vacation with an owner who couldn't do enough for us to make our trip memorable. I cannot recommend this location and absolutely cannot recommend the host.

Weather a Factor?
Astana let us know how SWEET our cottage was when they checked in, and how it was POURING Rain.
We thanked her and the next thing we knew, they had left and were wanting a refund!
When we called them to clarify the situation and all they could do was complain about the small kitchen and laugh and giggle while inventing excuses of why they felt “oppressed”!
Love this location. Close to everything but quiet & private. Parking right by door. Semi private pool.

Not as expected
Construction workers next door beating and banging couldn’t even take a nap on my vacation. Older neighborhood with couch sitting out at the drive. The unit itself was clean. Lots of instructions most of which started with Do Not.
Just right for a family vacation! Lovely little lanai and outdoor spaces. Loved the laid back vibes and plants and animals around the property. Great location for biking to restaurants and the beach. Be sure to bring your own soap and shampoo. Also, the pillows could use an upgrade on the Master bed small thing compared to benefits of this little place. Beautiful and peaceful!

Wow! I didn't know you are from Frisco!! I used to live in Dillon CO in the 60’s!! When the dam was being built! We live near Boulder now. Thanks for the heads up on the pillows we are here now and will replace them! Glad you had a good time. Diane
We had a great time at the cottage. It was everything as advertised, great location, clean, well appointed, and very nice neighbors. The pool was perfect and a great place to chat with neighbors. Overall a great experience.
Great location and very quiet. Close to bike trails and beach, restaurants and shops.
The lanai was a great screened-in outdoor space.
The pool is warm and clean!
The house and its location were just what we were expecting from the description and it was a convenient 2 minute bike ride from the closest beach. The neighborhood (and the whole island) is very peaceful, and the house is well-equipped and was just right for the two of us.

Why they chose this property
We visited Sanibel many times in recent years. Diane fell in love with the Shell Cottage when our next door neighbors from Colorado moved to Bonita Beach, Terri and Robin found it and showed it to her in April of 2014.The Neighborhood is a small development of 8 Units which share a newly restored pool and lots of common area next to the Sanibel River. It is very peaceful with a lot of lush island vegetation
What makes this property unique
This great place is very unique, small community great personality, close to beach with a pool!
