Hilltop Cabin
We had a great time. My wish is that they had lower beds for children and it was easier to find. Hope to use you again next year!
Lovely, cozy home. It was close to everything we wanted to visit. Had a few glitches, but the care taker and owner were great to work with to get all straight. Very peaceful and comfortable. I would definitely go back again.
We had a wonderful long weekend in Covington. It was a very low key trip. We visited the waterfall and the Humpback Bridge. We splashed around the the river. And we enjoyed drinks on the veranda.
Had a great stay over Thanksgiving at this cozy hilltop cabin in the woods. The cabin came with a full kitchen setup for meal prep, and a nice woodstove for the cool nights. We saw wild turkey, deer, and a blackbear. Great location to check out some of the local State parks for some hiking and the National Forests. My only complaint is the proximity to the freeway, with the traffic, but otherwise great location.

The house was great. Everything you need for a long stay.
Beautiful setting and great location for day trips to Virginia and West Virginia. We went to the New River Bridge and on the way back stopped at the Greenbrier Hotel built in the 1800's. In Hot Springs the Omini Hotel was built in 1700's with hot springs for your enjoyment. The Blue Ridge Parkway is only 50 minutes east in Virginia and has beautiful views. We took a ride to Snowshoe Ski Resort for lunch and returned the Seneca Trail. There is a Civil War park to stop at. Best restaurants we dined at. Cafe Michel in Clifton Forge, Cat and Owl in Low Moor, Fudge Street Cafe in Covington and Swinging Bridge south of Callaghan and Penney's diner for breakfast in Low Moor. Food Lion in Covington has all the groceries you need. We will return in the future and thank you Sandra.

So glad that you were able to take time to see and experience the beauty and historic value of the many opportunities in the area. Please return in the Fall, everything has a totally different look and the colors are fabulous or anytime!
Thank you again for treating our home with care and enjoying its amenities.
All the best,
Sandra Bradley
The house overlooks beautiful views from the back porch. Comfy and cozy home. The kitchen was fully stocked - as described. Lots of birds nesting, beautiful yard in the spring. It was damp during our visit, so you could smell the fireplace/woodstove in the den area. We were relaxed during the entire stay - way overdue. We are looking forward to returning for another stay soon!
House was spacious and clean, great bedding and linens. View out the back of house was great. Weather was cold when we arrived and they had a fire going in wood stove to greet us. Very cozy. Would stay again.
Very nice house and well appointed and easy check-n. Discussion about "paper logs" in description was confusing as there were no, and then told using regular log was okay. Otherwise a very nice stay in a beautiful house!
My best friend and I stayed here for a girls weekend and had a great time. House is up on 20+ acres and private, but you do still here some road noise from 64. Not bad, but noticeable. House was clean, but had a musty/moldy smell in kitchen area in particular. Bedrooms were not as bad. It was very clean, though. Property manager is was very nice and gave us some good recommendations on restaurants and things to do. Overall, we had a great time and would stay here again!
The owner and property manager were very helpful and responsive. The house was clean and the kitchen well equipped. The back porch is lovely. There is some road noise from the nearby highway but you stop hearing it after a few minutes. Great place to spend a gorgeous fall weekend.
We had a wonderful time at the cabin!! However, I think my German Shephard, Sasha, had the best time of all. She loved the property, running around the house and the property all day long. She played and we walked all over. The house was very well stocked and the beds very comfortable. We enjoyed the fire pit at night. Only issue was the master bath tub did not drain well but we just used the other shower. Appreciated the wifi for the few times I needed to do work and it was great relaxing and cooking dinner while enjoying football on Sunday!! Thanks for a wonderful weekend!! We hope to enjoy ur home again soon!!

The pictures online do not do this place justice! It is large, roomy, and very comfortable. The hostess has amazing and went above and beyond! Normally I miss my bed staying at a hotel or elsewhere... not here... comfy, cozy!
We had a wonderful time.
The Good
On our arrival, we ran into the property caretaker, Natalie. A very nice lady who took the time to tell us about the house and gave us suggestions of what to do while in the area.
The House - More house than cabin, it maintains a very warm 1950’s ranch architecture and decorated in a matching style. It has subtle modern updates while keeping its retro vibe.
View - Perched on a hill, it has a spectacular view of the mountains and valley.
Kitchen - Updated and fully stocked with modern cookware and appliances.
Water Pressure - Surprisingly good water pressure and heat in the master bath considering the home’s age and location.
Internet - We had 2 students schooling online and three adults teleworking, all worked simultaneously without any issues. A very important feature for families looking to get away during the Covid era
The Not-So-Good
The house is convenient to I-64; and when I say convenient, it’s literally looking over the highway about 1/4 of a mile away. As a result, you hear the constant din of traffic through out the day and night. If the quiet of nature is important to your mountain getaway, you will be disappointed by this location. Conversely, if noise doesn’t bother you and your looking for a central location to jump off to other spots in the area during the day, then this might be the place for you.
It took 52 years to bring us back together, but we finally did it. We reconnected on a DNA matching site. It was absolutely amazing. The house was very comfortable and felt like "home". Thank you for allow us to stay at your beautiful home.
After a summer of being trapped at home, coming here was just what the doctor ordered to relax our bodies and renew our spirits. The home itself is exactly as it is described. It is tucked into the woods away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Only the sounds of I-64 in the valley below interrupted our peace. Further, the area is full of great places to escape into the woods for great hikes and outings. Another way to disconnect from the screens we are so connected to in our every day existence during these strange times. Thank you for a great week away.

About the host
Hosted by Sandra Bradley
I am a native Virginian living in Los Angeles for the past 27 years. My rental home was my parents' retirement home. I purchased it from my Mother's estate and have been working on improving it for the past 15 years as our extended family has used it for get away weekends over the years. It is a joy to share the property with family/friends and those who want to rent for short term rental. I am an artist/art therapist. I attended JMU in Harrisonburg, VA for undergraduate work (BA in Art Ed.) and got my masters in Art Therapy at LMU, in Westchester CA. My main focus has been graphic design and illustration work. Also work with young people and eating disorders. I am still working, though I am beyond retirement age, I love the work. I have grown children who also work and live within the LA area. I have many relatives in Virginia and I try to spend at least 4-6 weeks a year there on "work-cations"... as there is always a project that needs attending the beauty of home ownership.
Why they chose this property
This was my parents' retirement home which they built in 1970. My father accrued the land from the The Cumberland Rumbold Estate. That was a land grant from the King of England back in the day. The land sits on top of a cliff that was named Escatawba which has been said to mean "Clear view" the fly-fishing farm in Hematite says it means "Clear water." whatever the word means, it was a native indian word and apparently is used to describe many "clear" things. LOL! With 38 acres of natural wood, it allows for limited hiking on a previously cut dirt road that goes from one end of the property to the other with a small local graveyard half way. Interesting tomb stones tell the story of the area ...a local fire, slaves, the death of a young hand maiden from England that links to the lovely restored Milton Hall which stands almost within site of the cliff.
What makes this property unique
It is on acreage and there is much privacy. There are deer, bear, rabbits, fox, ground hogs, hawks, buzzards and many bird varieties that live on the property. There is a 65 foot long porch that stretches the length of the back of the house which affords a beautiful view of the valley all the way to W.VA. There is a sturdy wooden swing and ample porch furniture for travelers relaxation including a grill. There are local stores within walking distance and a bakery that is a short drive away where you can get an array of baked goods daily. The W.VA state fair is within a short drive in the annual PGA at the Greenbrier is a big draw in July for avid gofers. The property has well water that is said to be the best in the county due to the many underground streams.
