About this property

Moose Meadows near Kilcher Homestead in Alaska the Last Frontier

Only a short drive off the main road, you’ll enjoy privacy in a secluded setting. With new beds, mattresses and furniture, this is a lovely two-level cabin, hand-built by Homer homesteaders with recent renovations completed in 2015. Moose Meadows has three cozy upstairs bedrooms, a modern kitchen, fully equipped for all your cooking desires, with a fully remodeled bathroom with bath and shower.
The wildlife in the immediate area is abundant, with moose, eagles, sandhill cranes, porcupines and many others. The cabin is sited privately with a large private yard, view of the bay, and a virgin wilderness behind. From the cabin, you can see beautiful Kachemak Bay and the mountains across the way.
The cabin provides modern features, has ample space and is a beautiful spot for a family to stretch out and use as a base of operations to explore Homer and Kachemak Bay. This cabin sits alone on a 3 acre plot 12 miles out East End road but has ready access on a graveled road, and is close to the amenities in the Fritz Creek area (gas, groceries, spirits), a world-class restaurant, and horse-back riding. In the beautiful town of Homer are halibut and salmon fishing, the Pratt Museum, galleries, restaurants, groceries, ATV tours, kayaking, music/theater, glacier/bear viewing, air tours and much, much more.
The cabin is within walking distance of a historic site of rich significance, the Kilcher Homestead, where I grew up in an austere 400 square foot homesteaders cabin that you’ll want to visit. Easy access to the Kilcher Family Homestead provides over 600 acres in which to hike through to the beach via one of only three beach access sites outside of Homer.

My family homesteaded Alaska in the late 30's and early 40's. I was born in Basel, Switzerland while my originally Swiss family was touring and my father was lecturing about pioneer life in Alaska. I was raised on the homestead one parcel below this property and am one of the original 8 homestead siblings. I left for college and joined the Marine Corps. After 31 years of commissioned service, I returned to Alaska. The Kilcher Family Homestead is 620 acres and is protected by a conservation easement. I am a volunteer with the Alaska Humanities Forum and the Civilian Advisory Board to Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson. I manage four active vacation rentals and love showing the homestead to our guests. We purchased these homes while we were in active duty, realizing their special proximity near or on the family homestead to make sure our children could live near us. Since this may not happen for a number of years, we love the vacation rental model as a way to share and yet still have available for our own use.

Why they chose this property

This property was built on the site of an old homestead by friends I knew growing up in Homer. While it remains a cute little cabin, with rustic touches inside and out, we’ve renovated it throughout and put in all new furniture as well. It is located below East End Road and above the historic Kilcher homestead about 12 miles south of Homer. From the large rustic deck, you’re surrounded by meadows and forests on a private 3 acre lot that feels bigger; the sense of privacy is hard to beat. Try to yodel and you'll hear the forest echoing your yodels back. Within walking distance of the Kilcher Homestead, it offers privacy, but with ready access to fine dining, shopping, kayaking, horseback riding, ATV rides, art, theater, fishing and all the other amazing opportunities Homer has to offer. See the Homer Chamber of Commerce website to see how full of life Homer is.

What makes this property unique

Moose Meadows is close (walking distance) to the 620 acre Kilcher Homestead, which has a living museum with a window into the world of 1940’s Homer, where homesteaders both fought and worked with the wilderness before, during and after the War. There is room to roam, and you will find hiking trails that lead to the beach and the Homestead. This property is within walking distance of the best horseback riding service in Homer, and a short five minute drive to perhaps the finest dining experience in Homer. Through the Kilcher homestead, you can walk all the way to the beach, one of only three access points to the beach from Homer all the way south to the sloughs of Kachemak Bay.
