Everything was exactly as expected. Easy access down to the beach and exactly what we were looking for! Host had laundry services and beach supplies onsite which added to our experience. We will definitely recommend this to friends visiting the big island.
It was a great place to relax and decompress wit beach across the street and hot ponds down the road

Yes, if you want to get away to a beautiful part of the Big Island - you’ve found us. In addition, things are about to get better as the county is reconnecting the main road between Rte 132 and Kalapana Kapoho Bch Rd. Newly created beaches may be accessed.
Was very nice. Thought the cottage had a/c but it was only in bedroom so got quite warm in rest of house. We still enjoyed our stay. Thanks!

Fair warning to all travelers, screen shot the instructions to get into the cottage before you leave Pāhoa as the reception is spotty at best. I had to drive all the way back to Pahoa to get the information onto my phone.
Cottage is quaint and small but delivers what was Expected. Clean, ac worked quite well, all the amenities you Would need. Beach across the way is an optional clothing beach so be aware if you have kids lol.
It’s a taste of actually Hawaii living and not at a resort. Sofa bed was decently comfortable but overall a good experience.

Very spacious cottage on a quiet area along the shore. Clean, comfortable bed, great view!
We agree that it is a great area - although semi- remote however we and many others feel our cottages are located in the most beautiful part of the island. Everyone has heard about Mauis’ ‘ road to Hana’ - well our cottage is located on Hawaiis’ own rad to Hana and it’s called ‘ Kalapana- Kapoho Bch Rd. It’s utterly ‘ gorgeous’.
I love staying at the cottage. Everything I need is there in the location weasel fabulous. The bed was very comfortable and rooms were larger than expected. I would definitely stay again.

Amen on that ! If you want to get away from the city, this is a great option and still have the niceties of fast internet, TV, phone , market nearby and a beautiful ocean view - All at a great price.
The cottage was perfectly cute. Really enjoyable to stay here. If you want peace and quiet away from the hustle and bustle this is the place for you. Black sand beach across the road cannot be beat.

Just an awesome little cottage away from the city and traffic. If you’re looking for beaches and nightlife, this may not be an option for you. Great host, clean and comfortable.

There is a beach across the street which is very popular in our area but if you have a disability - the steps down to the beach can be a challenge. Most people have no problem w/ the rocky stairs and many people swim w/ the dolphins at this beach. There are warm ponds at the other beach nearby as well
This is an older house, as listed, and across from the beach, also as listed. But you can still hear the ocean, and the the kitchenette is perfect. I loved being across the street from the beach and just down the street from the warm ponds. I did have issues with the internet, but the owners were responsive and stated that issue is being worked on.
I highly recommend this place.
The cottage was adorable, and even nicer than the photos. Clean, comfortable, and GPS takes you right there. I knew it was remote, but it’s about 20 mins to the nearest town, and even that’s not really big. There are 4 or 5 places to grab a bite to eat (not counting chains) in town, and there’s a small market and restaurant at the end of the road about 2-3 miles from the cabin. The beach across the street is a bit of an adventure to find access to, and there’s a steep path to get there. But it’s doable. If you’re looking for a private getaway, definitely consider this one!
This is a beautiful place and quite clean. They also have a cache of masks, snorkel, chairs and other beach items which is helpful. We used this cottage as base camp to visit Volcanoes NP. It is a good option if you have a rental car. They don't call it the "Big Island" for nothing. There is a lot of windshield time when traveling the area. My only constructive criticism of this property, as well as almost all other VRBOs, is to reduce the unnecessary furniture, bookshelves, and tchotchkes that are used to make it feel "homie". The owners are really responsive and getting in and out was simple. Very, very cool place.
Room so dirty,it seems never cleaned it , I would not recommend to any friends.

We looked in to the matter and have replaced the cleaner . In addition, we have established a new quality control policy. Cleaners are now required to take photos of their work after cleaning a cottage when un- supersized.
This cottage had an awesome open living room, a comfortable couch, and good airflow. The bedroom is nice and my friend said the bed was really comfortable as well.
The kitchen situation is peculiar for sure, but manageable. It’s outside in a small shed and only has a small two burner hot plate thing, but there is also a large propane grill.
So if you plan on cooking a big meal it’s advisable to cook before the sun goes down (shed is dark as we discovered) or use the gas grill. Honestly though it felt like camping and was fun to cook this way.
Overall, the host was great, location was beautiful, and I the cottage was lovely. I would definitely stay there again. Thanks!

Quaint little cottage
We enjoyed the little cottage and it was everything we expected. The reason for my lower review is due to the fact that the beach across the street is "clothing optional" which means some folks choose to go in the nude.
The beach is not large and the cottage is in a remote location. So with the beach not available the cottage did not retain its value for us. We left 2 days early and found a different place.
So, if you want a family friendly beach wear people wear their clothes, this probably is not for you. If that doesnt bother you, then this place is excellent.
The beach is not large and

This is unfair. Most people do a simple Google search of Kehena Beach before booking but this person didn’t bother to. He then blames us for not liking the beach and then gives us a ‘ 3 star’ because of it despite saying the cottage was great. This is the most popular beach for young and old on this side of the island and the cottage is great and well priced.

Cute, remote cottage
The cottage was cute, although away from most attractions. We chose to stay here based on the listing being across the street from a beautiful black sand beach. However, no where is it mentioned that the beach is clothing optional. As I was traveling with my teenage daughter, this detail made the beach unusable for us. The only other beaches were an hour drive. The warm ponds were cool and pretty close, but if you visit be sure to go at high tide. The cottage was cute but it bears to mention that the interior pictures don’t really match the actual interior. The furniture has been changed. There was a microwave, toaster and shared laundry. The bed was comfortable, but the living room furniture was well used and not super comfortable. If you stay here with family I would just expect to drive at least an hour to any attraction, whether it be a beach day or the National park. The hosts were helpful while giving us plenty of space. I just feel like the beach was really highlighted as a selling point while not providing the transparency of it being clothing optional.

It’s well known that Kehena Black Sand Beach is bathing suit optional as many beaches are. That’s the big draw and why it’s so popular. A quick Google search would have cleared that up but it appears that the guest did not research it at all as she should have. She chose to blame us for her not doing any research.
We will be changing furniture again as we normally do every year.
