About this property

FANTASTIC 16th CENTURY MANOR - SPECIAL REDUCED RATE FOR JULY 16-27

This is a significant part of the Manoir du Belvedere, occupying an entire floor. It has its own private walled garden, and its own entrance to rue du Chateau, a historic street connecting Auray centre and the medieval port of Saint Goustan. All rooms are large, with high ceilings, original beams and fireplaces.Tastefully furnished with Louis XV and Henry II style furniture, tapestries and paintings from around the world. There is a piano in the Chateau room. The spacious living room is full of light, with very comfy sofas, armchairs and cushions. The kitchen and bathrooms are recently renovated with modern facilities, tiled walls and floor. A separate and bright dining room is ideal for colder evenings. Outside, a large patio is a great place for alfresco dining while the garden is ideal for a barbecue. Quick, easy access to SANDY BEACHES (Trinite-sur-Mer, Carnac, Erdeven, Etel),sailing, surfing, cruises on the Gulf of Morbihan and ferries to Atlantic islands. The Gulf of Morbihan had a dozen pretty islands, some public and some private. Rambling, golf and horse-riding, an aquarium, an eco-park and an arboretum add to the wide choice of family activities. Our house is in the heart of this mediaeval town - many restaurants, sea-food specialities, Breton creperies, pizzerias are in walking distance. A restaurant with 1 Michelin star is a 2 minutes walk away (Restaurant Terre-Mer). A traditional covered market is 100m away, esp. good for oysters, lobsters and other shell fish. No need to use car, all necessary shopping for food, clothes and souvenirs ... is within walking distance. If you still want to use your car, parking is nearby.

The Manoir du Belvedere is spacious, ideal for family gatherings, two families sharing, a big family or a small family. It is situated on 1st floor, with own private entrance and own big private garden - a rarity in the heart of Auray. Everything is within reach. From here you can walk to get everything you need - from fresh croissants for breakfast to the must-haves for preparing a home-made gourmet dinner. Auray's colourful Monday market will attract you and your children alike. Here you can buy fresh local produce, Breton handicrafts and souvenirs while practising your French! In the covered market, open every morning except Sunday, you will enjoy choosing from a great variety of fish, oysters, mussels and other shell-fish, not to mention a wide range of cheese, fruit and vegetables. Kayaking and cruising the river on electric boats are in Saint Goustan, a stone's throw away from the property. Public swimming pool, tennis courts and library are nearby. Traditional Breton music and dancing ('fest noz') in surrounding towns and villages. You can explore many popular places of South Brittany within a 5-10 minutes' drive - Vannes, Saint-Anne d'Auray,Trinite-sur-Mer,Carnac, Quiberon, Locmariaquer, Iles-aux-Moines, Etel, Rochfort-en-Terre.

Glimpses of history: Built on the site of the original 12th century Chateau d'Auray, from cut granite stone auctioned when the chateau was demolished in 1550, the Manoir stores a rich and long history in its walls. It has been renovated by France's master craftsmen. During the renovation we unearthed many traces of the past, from original fireplaces hidden behind modern facades to the chateau-style floor in the living room, equally well concealed under hardboard and which could be restored only by France’s master craftsmen. The higher wall visible from the Garden wall is believed to be part of the Chateau's keep.

Visit the iconic, picturesque port of Saint Goustain, across the 12th century bridge, a few meters from the Manoir. This is where Benjamin Franklin arrived in 1776 to seek France’s support for American Independence. You will enjoy walking along the top of the ramparts that overlook the river. Hike upstream to the Champs des Martyrs, legacy of the Royal Navy's involvement in the 'Quiberon Affair' in 1795 and read the inscription (be warned: it is in Latin!). Five minutes by car brings you to world famous Saint-Anne d'Auray. Visited by Pope John Paul II in 1996 and by over half a million pilgrims and tourists every year, the basilica is situated on the spot where, in 1624, a local ploughman had a vision of Saint-Anne, the mother of the Virgin Mary. Many other must-sees only a few minutes drive away. An ideal place for whatever you want to do!

Magnificent house in a charming place
You couldn’t ask for a nicer place to stay to enjoy what this part of Brittany has to offer. We have been visiting France twice a year for some years and I cannot think of a nicer house that we have used and it is certainly excellent value. The parking situation could appear daunting initially but we always managed to find a place 5 or at most 10 minutes walk from the house. Auray is a charming place to explore and the indoor market behind the Mairie (about 200 metres away) is the place to buy good fish, cheese, bread and meat. Thank you Nigel for making your house available to others.

Wonderful stay
The apartment is really well located, large and comfortable with the benefit of plenty of outside space. Nigel was a generous host who kindly met my parents to assist with their arrival ahead of us. Auray is a vibrant and interesting town, and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Charmant!
Such a great apartment. I had some reservations about the style from the photos but when you get there it all makes sense and is in perfect keeping with the amazing manor the flat sits in. The apartment is huge but feels very welcoming. And having the little garden was lovely in the sunshine. The kitchen is more basic than expected but has everything you need. Auray is a great town perfectly situated for exploring the Golfe de Morbihan: good restaurants, big market and fewer tourists than nearby Vannes. Definitely recommended.

Lovely Holiday at Le Manoir du Belvedere
Delightful house full of character and charm. Nice and cool in the very hot weather we had. Great to sit out on the patio for meals and to sit in the garden to chill out on all the various chairs provided. Perfect location for walking to the port and into the town, although you need good legs for the steepish slopes and the steps up to the house, but good for our leg muscles! Very enjoyable stay

A Lovely Property
We really enjoyed our stay at Le Manoir. This is a lovely property and much thought has gone into the decoration and furnishing. The location was very central with short walks down to the port and up to the centre, with loads of bars and restaurants. Nigel was an excellent host, responding quickly to any queries we had, even though he was away at the time. Whilst you have to park in the town car parks, this was not a problem and you can park outside Le Manoir to load/offload. We also had our two Westies, who enjoyed all their walks. Nearly all beaches have dog bans but we did find a couple that were OK. If you have accessibility concerns, you should note that there are around 26 steps to get up to the property but everything is on the same level after that including the garden. Also, if you are a large party , be aware that there is only a small oven and freezer compartment. As there were only two of us this was fine. Thanks again Nigel for a great holiday.

Easter in Auray
The apartment in Auray is perfectly situated in the old picturesque quarter of Auray, a short walk from the lovely port of St Goustan and its lively bars and restaurants as well as the centre of Auray with its shops and market. In addition there were lovely walks available long the river. Auray is perfectly located for exploring Brittany and in the time we were there we visited Brest, St Malo (which is highly recommended) and the town of Vannes which is lovely to walk around. We travelled to Auray by car from Caen and found the apartment very easily. Whilst there are a few stairs to climb to reach the apartment once in, it is lovely. It is very light and spacious, with very large bedrooms and sitting area, and the garden was great for our dog. The whole holiday was extremely dog friendly and we were able to take our terrier into all the restaurants and shops we visited - apart from the supermarkets. Nigel was an extremely helpful host, and responded to all our enquiries promptly and informatively. Couldn't ask for a more!

Ideal stay in Auray
Our family had a very pleasant stay here. This was our first time in Auray and we loved the place. The town has tons of character and lots of good individual places to shop, drink and eat. It was a really good place to be based in order to explore this part of France. Very nice property in the heart of Auray. Spacious and comfortable. Ideal stay in Auray!.

Beautiful spacious gite in exceedingly pretty town
A very clever partion of the manor house has left a very comfortable and spacious gite of the middle floor. With ample room, and more besides for a family of 5 and a mini daschund. Beautifully decorated in a style befitting the high corniced ceilings and ornate fireplaces. The clever design extends to the elevated garden to which you can walk out directly from the gite, and gives a wonderful space to enjoy the evening sun and a barbecue. Located in a pedestrianised touristic street, the gite is close many restaurants and bars both in Auray and St Goustan port across the cobbled bridge at the foot of Rue du Chateau. The walks around the town, particularly through the woods and along Quai Martin are excellent, and the square in St Goustan into which the chairs and tables spill is a lively sun trap for an afternoon glass of the local cider and a spot of people watching. Parking is not at the property but is not inconvenient at a short few minutes walk into the town. It might be a little confusing to the initiated at first, but was clarified from the outset by Nigel, the gracious hose who lives nearby. He also provided a raft of materials for the attractions and boat rides around the Bay of Morbihan, all within short car journeys from Auray. All in all a fantastic and beautiful property in a fantastic and beautiful town.

Location, location, location & comfort & charm
Wow! What an experience. Even before we booked, we knew we would enjoy our stay as the responses to our questions were so helpful and charming. Our first impressions were not wrong. The Manoir was just as it seems on the website - historic, full of character with amazing furnishings. It was also, however, comfortable and unpretentious and well equipped for a family holiday, a charming mixture that puts you at ease and helps you to relax. Even our teenage sons were impressed, no mean feat. The location is superb, with the best of Brittany on the doorstep: whether you like to eat out, visit historic sites, explore medieval towns and cities, cycle, walk, shop or sit on a beach, Auray is a great base to do it and the Manoir has an enviable spot in the town. We loved the access to both the town and the port and even leaning out of the window and watching the world go by was a pleasure on this charming pedestrian street filled with galleries. A true slice of French life. The outside space was a real bonus, despite the weather being mixed we managed a meal or two outdoors and a read in the garden and when it rained we were almost glad of the excuse to set the grand table in the dining room and eat, drink, play cards. The only thing we would change would be the length of the stay. We only had 4 nights and there was so much to do in the area, and so many restaurants to try that we had hardly started when it was time to leave. We would love to return. We recommend visiting Vannes, going on a cruise round the Golfe du Morbihan and marvelling at the megaliths near Carnac. Our host was utterly charming and we would not hesitate to return. We recommend the Manoir most highly.

We loved the Manoir du Belvedere
We loved the Manoir du Belvedere and would certainly like to stay again. The apartment is historic but nice, clean and airy with modern facilities. The rooms are large and and nicely furnished and there's a patio and small secluded garden if you want to eat outside. The location is great: one hundred metres up the road and you're in Auray's market place, so fresh food is always available, and a hundred metres down and you're in the delightful port of St Goustan with its quaint streets and riverside restaurants. We also enjoyed a good river-side walk down the Loch to Bono. More generally it's easy to get to other places in south Morbihan such as the historic town of Vannes, beaches (Lochmariaquer's our favourite) and prehistoric sites, such as Carnac. Though you can drive to the door for dropping off /picking up, we found it easiest to leave the car at Place du Loch where parking is free 24hrs – especially since that's the way to the coast. Lot's of useful information in the house and the good hosts – there is you need them and not if you don't. We spent a very pleasant lunchtime being entertained in their garden – so thank you Nigel and Hoa for an enjoyable stay. Alastair Baillie & Family.

Charming house in a lovely place!
We had a great holiday in Auray. The house is very cosy and big enough for a family with children. Very lovely decorations with authentic details. We had great dinners in the dining room and enjoyed the cosy street very full of galleries and very close to all kinds of restaurants. I could recommend this place to anyone who wants to feel at home in Auray. We will definitely return.

Characterful apartment in a fantastic location
Great apartment with an abundance of character in a fantastic location in picturesque Auray.. This is a very large apartment with plenty of space for the 5 of us to get lost in! Nigel and Hoa were very welcoming and responsive without being intrusive. Despite being central and on a pedestrianised street, the parking was straight-forward. Auray is a great base for exploring the Gulf de Mordihan, the islands, the Quiberon Pensinsula and the beaches around Carnac. Great market on Monday. I would highly recommend.

Fantastic location, good but not great
This apartment is in a fantastic location in Auray. It is close to shops, restaurants and the local market. The apartment is a lovely building and has a nice courtyard and small garden. Be aware that the double beds are very small and really only suitable for one person. The kitchen has limited crockery and a small bench top oven so if you are catering for 6-8 it could be difficult. The owner is very friendly and helpful and took on board our comments about the beds, the small and non absorbent towels, stained duvet and poor quality linen. These things may not concern all travellers however it is small touches like this that can make accommodation really, really good. If the bedding and linen is improved I would recommend this place (more crockery would be good also). I have given this 3 stars if the above changes take place.

lovely place for a holiday
The Manoir du Belvedere is a lovely historic house in a charming pedestrian street in the heart of Auray. The apartment is huge and tastefully decorated and well equipped with own patio and garden. The owners were very kind and supportive and assisted with any inquiry. Shops, restaurants, supermarkets and the harbour St Goustan are only a couple of steps away and one can find 24-hour free parking spaces also within a short walking distance from the apartment. We absolutely recommend the Manoir and hope to come back soon.

Just as good as last time we stayed there
Our second stay at Manoir du Belvedere was just as good as the first. In fact we enjoyed it even more as we had great weather. The apartment was as remembered and we enjoyed the harbour and fantastic beaches. I would recommend this apartment to anyone wanting a relaxing holiday with good access to Brittany beaches but close to all amenities. The owner is very helpful and a great host. See you again in a couple of years!

Excellent location, value, space and cleanliness
Initially property was hard to find, however once located we really enjoyed our stay. Property is well positioned, clean and well appointed. As we were holidaying with another another couple, we wanted an apartment where we would each have plenty of space and not crammed. This apartment proved ideal for us. However should be we holidaying on our own in this area again, we would still select this apartment. Owner was very gracious and provided any assistance requested. Parking can be a hassle, but once we understood the local environment, no further issues. (Note: On re-reading my previous review it appears to give the impression that this is a Shared apartment, which is not the case. We were only sharing because we were holidaying together and wanted to share the apartment)

Lovely place
Would recommend the Manoir du Belvedere to all! Rooms are huge and full of nice décor and lovely little touches that make a big difference! Everything is spotlessly clean and well thought-out. All rooms are bright, making even a rain day enjoyable. The patio and garden are great places for private and al fresco dining. We are really pampered by all that is offered to us. The gift pack is fantastic and we really appreciate the care that the owners of the Manoir have shown to the guests. No worry at all about parking: everything is within reach and it is easy to find a parking nearby anyway. Auray and its surrounding has so much to offer to everyone. We love everything that we have seen and experienced. We will definitely come back again soon. J.S

Superb!
The moment we entered Nigel’ apartment we knew we had found something very special. It is both elegant and comfortable and perfectly reflects its owners. We were made to feel like visiting friends by our gracious hosts and in all our years of travel we have never been made to feel more welcome. Everything you require for a special holiday retreat is here. We cannot recommend it highly enough.

About the host

Host profile image
We have done a great amount of renovation while keeping the historical architectural heritage intact. We did much of the renovation work ourselves, except the part that must be done by master craftsmen. During the renovation, we have uncovered many features that had been hidden for centuries.

Why they chose this property

When we visited this property with the real estate agent, it was raining and dark. Yet when we came into the house, it looked great. And we though if it looked like this on a gloomy rainy day, it must be gorgeous during normal days. And it is indeed. It is always cool inside even when it roasts outside. Air conditioning is never needed. The 1m80- thick stone walls in the basement must have something to do with the cool air we always have, no matter how hot outside. And the house is full of history. Its garden is spread over four different levels.

What makes this property unique

The house has charmed every visitor. Everyone who has been here said that we had found an ideal place for fun, history, activities, relaxation, shopping, cultural discovery and more.
