About this property

Cozy Quiet Log Cabin in the Woods w/ Epic Views, Fireplace - Whimsical Hollow

Whimsical Hollow is a darling full log cabin that is nestled among some of the highest mountain peaks in Colorado. The views are absolutely amazing and the home is surrounded by spruce and pine trees. It is a serene and very romantic location. The home has all new furniture and amenities of the highest quality.

The romantic living room has a wood burning fireplace for cozy nights around the fire (you may want to bring extra wood!). There is a dining room with a table that seats 4 and a fully equipped kitchen. There is additional seating at the kitchen bar also. You will find everything you need to make your family chef happy.

There is a bedroom with a king size bed on the main floor. It has beautiful mountain decor and furnishings. It is next to the full bath which has a walk-in shower. The decorations throughout the home are exquisite. Everything reflects the cozy romantic atmosphere of a luxury mountain cabin. Upstairs there is a second spacious bedroom which also has a king size bed. It too has new furniture, linens and amenities. You will love the views from the bed. You can look right out of the two story windows and see the beautiful white capped mountains. What a way to wake up!

The property is on a dead end road with very few properties. It is not a busy and crowded location. You will most likely not see anyone during your stay except an occasional visitor such as a moose or fox. There are also deer and bears in the area. If you watch closely you may even see some elk. The front porch runs the length of the front of the house and has comfortable seating where you can sit and enjoy your morning coffee and take in the gorgeous mountain views. There is a gas grill provided behind the home.

The area is know for it's unlimited outdoor activities. Almost anything you can think of is within minutes of the home. You can hike and explore the National Forest right behind the home. There is a road just above the location of the home that you can hike to the end of and be right in the National Forest. Many of the famous 14'ers are located in this area where you can hike or climb. Horseback riding is just a few minutes from the home at the Platte River Ranch. They have hay rides, hour long rides, and even evening steak rides. If you like white-water rafting, the Arkansas River is only a few miles away. You can raft at Buena Vista. They have a variety of trips from safe photo floats to wild rapid trips. ATVing is also great in the area. There are multiple locations where you can ATV. One Trail over Mosquito Pass takes you right into Leadville where you can enjoy lunch or dinner at one of the many restaurants in the restored mining town. This is a fabulous place to shop for antiques too!

About the owners:
As native Coloradans, we love the outdoors, the spectacular seasons, and the diversity of nature.
Our adventurous spirits lead us to purchase our cozy log cabin in 2015. This is a place to get away and unplug from the noise of the city, recharge and be rejuvenated by the awesome surroundings. (It is only a 95 minute drive from southwest Denver on 285. We avoid the crazy I-70 traffic and congestion). Through our front window, we have the spectacular view of Mt. Sherman, which is a 14"er". Enjoying a cup of coffee from our welcoming and relaxing porch and watching the sunrise burst above Mt. Sherman is a wonderful way to greet the day.

This beautiful area and our cozy log cabin are just too special not to share. The fellowship of family and friends is what has inspired us to open our home and hearth. The memories that will be made here will last a lifetime. We hope all who stay here feel the welcome embrace of friendship and hospitality.

Why the owners Chose Fairplay:
Mountains; Outdoor Activities Galore; Proximity to Breckenridge; Small Town Friendly Attitude
The small towns of Fairplay and Alma hearken back to the simpler days of living. We enjoy talking to the friendly locals and playing pool at the South Park Saloon.

Fall Getaway

Enjoyed our stay very much. Nice and secluded which was exactly what we were looking for. The cabin was very well equipped and lacked for nothing. The host of this property was very attentive and stayed in touch when power went out for a short time which I appreciated very much. Overall, I would highly recommend this cabin.

Dream Vacation

We had a great time staying in the cabin which was very clean, cozy and had everything needed for the comfortable stay. The surroundings and the property itself appear to be like from a fairy-tail book. Very private, beautiful cabin! We loved it so much that are planning to come back the next year. Vlad & Tatiana

Peace and tranquility!

Loved this property. We saw more chipmunks and squirrels than people while staying here. Our only complaint is the road getting there was terrifying. Miles of washboard dirt roads were sketchy, even in our 4 wheel drive truck. Guess that’s part of mountain living.

For those like me who have altitude or respiratory symptoms lower is better on elevation. I loved every second with the walks, fireplace, movies, games and trees. Thank you so much

Perfect Getaway

We had a great stay at the Whimsical Hollow. The property manager went out of their way to make sure we were taken care of during a Mother’s Day snow storm. They contacted us and asked if we needed anything because they were coming by to drop off firewood and some extra sheets and towels. They had the driveway plowed as soon as it was possible. They also were understanding when we notified them of a minor problem at the property. The wildlife near the cabin was awesome. We will definitely be staying here again

Comfy and Quiet Cabin in the Woods

Very clean and comfortable cabin. Positioned fairly close to two small towns with all the comforts you would need. Close to a few good hiking trails. Beautiful drives in and out. Quiet area with fair privacy. Comfortable home with 2 king beds. Everything was as comfortable as you could hope for. Wifi was better than expected but don’t expect high speed for remote video meetings or the like. Take the hosts for their word when they say the road in can be a bit nerve wracking. A bit rough for a sedan even in the summer but anything bigger will be perfectly fine. Even the sedan was fine if you’re not bothered by a brief bumpy ride. All in all a nice stay and nice home.

Great spot for a winter vacation

We were looking for a place to spend a week relatively close to Breckenridge, Vail and Keystone, as these 3 mountains accept the EPIC passes. While not exactly close to the 3 resorts, the beautiful scenery along the way made the drives seem to go fast. The cabin was great, larger than we expected, warm, very cozy. The decorations were tastefully done, creating a charming environment for our stay. Kitchen was well stocked with dishes and glassware, utensils, pots, spices, etc. The upgraded stove and microwave were great, also the Keurig and regular coffee maker. After skiing and sightseeing we enjoyed quiet evenings by the stone fireplace, with the ample supply of well-seasoned firewood. Beds were very comfortable, plenty of drawer storage so you don't feel you're living out of a suitcase. We rented a 4x4 Tahoe, which turned out to be a great idea as the mountain roads were very icy. The communication from the hosts was great, our questions were answered promptly, and with a lot of details and recommendations. The house book with instructions provided very helpful hints and suggestions, and as it mentioned, do not take the high elevation lightly, it does take some getting used to. To summarize, we had an EPIC week at the cabin, it made a great home base for our excursions and a perfect place to spend long evenings by the fire.

Magical, Cozy and Quant

Everything that the owner has described on this cabin is very accurate. My husband and I enjoyed the cabin tremendously. It's very cozy and had everything we needed. It's just a wonderful spot to sit back and relax. We were there just last week (Feb '20) and the only thing I can recommend for future renters is to definitely get a 4 WD vehicle. Several rental car companies will tell you that they cannot guarantee you one...and they can't...we got stuck with an AWD vehicle. It did fine for the most part but we did have to get a neighbor to pull us out of the driveway one day. The cabin has a few spots outside to take the best photos with all the trees and snow. The only wildlife we saw was a fox. For any flatlanders looking to stay at this elevation...it took us 3-4 days to actually not have too bad of a headache. So pace yourself and hydrate as we did. Don't stop drinking water. This elevation will slow you down until you acclimate to it but it was well worth it. Thankfully we didn't have any serious issues. It's absolutely beautiful. The decorations were wonderful and it made us feel at home. We couldn't have asked for a better experience.

Over Priced Run Down Cabin

I live in Denver and frequently rent mountains properties for vacations. We love to be in the mountains and are very acclimated to elevation. Nowhere does this property disclose it is above 11,000 feet. Stating a property is above 9,000 feet, but not disclosing how much above is irresponsible and can be dangerous. The kitchen is poorly equipped. The grill is not available in the winter/spring. The propane heater in the cabin smells awful and may need serviced, we stopped using it. The bedding and towels are old and harsh to touch and smell of mildew. There is no dishwasher, especially during a pandemic ridiculous! Essentially one is relying on pervious renters to thoroughly clean the dishes. There is no garbage disposal. The carpet is in abysmal shape. Nothing magical here except the price they are charging. Don't waste your money, there are much nicer places for the price in our beautiful mountains.

This little cabin is exactly as described. The kitchen has been updated with an amazing gas stove/ oven. The property is covered in wildlife that are most certainly not afraid to come say hi. The drive to the house isn’t as bad as some reviews state, but it isn’t for the weary either. It’s a bit of a rough dirt road, carved into the mountain with twists and turns. If you’re looking for an adventure, this is definitely the place for you! The owners of the property are, hands down, the nicest people! They handled every question I had with ease and plenty of reassurance. There were no issues or hiccups along the way or while we were there. The scenery… I can’t say enough about it! The Mountain View’s are spectacular, to say the least! While you are here, check out FairPlay and Alma. Both are cute, quaint little towns that are humming with locals and shops all day long. There is literally something for everyone! Oh! And the food… good lord it’s delicious out there! Recommendations: Oxygen! Get yourself some oxygen! We are from Oklahoma and boy did we need it hahaha. I highly recommend seeing the two towns for sure, any and every restaurant you can swing, South Park City (FULL of history), and Montgomery Reservoir- definitely see the waterfalls leading into it!
The cabin in all it’s beauty.
