Captain's Cabin Bed & Breakfast: Bourbon Trail, History & Romance
Enjoy your own log cabin on a wooded hillside overlooking a lake as you start on the bourbon trail, head to the races or visit great museums. It's been the location for four movies, including Lifetime, as well as several commercials! Period furnishings and modern conveniences make this an unforgettable retreat. A massive stone fireplace creates a quiet ambiance. Tasteful antiques appoint the cabin for a step back in time.
Captain's Cabin offers a special one-of-a-kind experience surrounded by history and luxury simultaneously. You will enjoy your own full kitchen, fully equipped and stocked with spices and supplies. The bath has been lovingly renovated while retaining the clawfoot tub. Enjoy a long soak with hand-crafted scrubs and soaps. There is no shower! You are surrounded in comfort from the ultra soft sheets, luxurious robes, and Sleep Number bed to the gourmet hot breakfast delivered to your door every weekend morning. Continental breakfast is provided on weekdays. (We promise you won't go hungry!) Join us for a Cooking With Bourbon Dinner Experience on weekends. Sip wine by the fireplace, read on the back porch swings or enjoy the wildlife visiting the lake from the front porch. Only 17 minutes from downtown Louisville, you are surrounded by 8 acres of woods and wildlife. Take a walk along the lake, hike through the woods and discover the waterfall. Take a canoe ride or go wading in the smooth limestone creek. Warm up by the firepit and roast marshmallows or use the grill to make your favorite dinner. Play golf or disc golf on the adjacent public courses. Captain's Cabin was featured in the April 2015 issue of Country's Best Cabins magazine, 2015 September issue of Style Blueprint magazine and April 2016 Home of the Week in Courier Journal.
Captain's Cabin is a great place to start your Bourbon Trail adventure, experience one of the Top Foodie Cities, visit the Ark and Creation Museum, bet on the ponies at Churchill Downs or visit Louisville's notable museums, including Slugger Baseball Museum, Ali Center and Frasier History Museum. But many people come here just to relax and get away from it all!

The Captain’s Cabin was charming, beautifully decorated, and VERY comfy! Jan and Tammy certainly went above and beyond with communication and treats including Christmas cookies! Our stay was just an overnight so we did not get a chance to appreciate the outdoor activities that the cabin grounds allowed (lake, stream, canoeing)…. Maybe we need a return trip?We would highly recommend the Captain’s Cabin. Beautifully maintained, very clean, well appointed, and it is just like sleeping in a movie set (yes it has been in movies). Take a step back in time and enjoy this wonderful place!
We stayed at Captain’s Cabin Bed & Breakfast: Bourbon Trail, History & Romance in Louisville, KY during a family reunion, and it was absolutely wonderful. The cabin was beautifully appointed, featuring a full kitchen, a cozy upstairs bedroom with a comfortable queen-size bed, and a charming fireplace downstairs.Tammy was an exceptional host—she stocked the refrigerator with plenty of breakfast goodies and snacks, and even delivered a hot breakfast to us on a chilly morning! The location was perfect, and we truly loved every moment of our stay. We’ll definitely be back!
The pictures on VRBO which are beautiful don’t even do this place justice. It is spotless it is authentic it is perfect for a get a way. I strongly recommend the cabin. The owners are incredible and to top it all off it’s a bed and breakfast! If there was a way to give more than 5 stars we would. We will be coming back
Very nice. Loved staying in the old fashioned cabin. Always wanted to do this at Christmas time and wake up to a fire. Maybe another time. We would notice something new in the cabin every time we looked around. Host was great. Worked with us to switch days of cooked breakfast which was great. Variety of breakfast food during the week. Tammy makes a great derby pie. Nice quiet area. Close to restaurants and parks.

Thanks Teri! Glad you enjoyed everything. Come back soon for the cozy fireplace.
Very charming cabin and decorated authentically. We were very comfortable and also treated to an afternoon snack upon arrival as well as tasty breakfast items for each day. We enjoyed a walk down the road by the stream, but unable to canoe in the lake. Our host and hostess were very nice and friendly and very accommodating. Delightful experience. We enjoyed a visit to Bernheim Forest and rode the Bluegrass rail bike in Versailles.
Such a cool and relaxing place to spend a few days! We don't like to overschedule our getaways so having a clean, cozy and interesting place to stay is always a priority so that we can simply relax! This was perfect for us. Close enough to bourbon tours and delightful hosts. Highly recommend!
This was the perfect place for a fall getaway. It was peaceful and felt isolated, even though everything you need or want was a short drive. The cabin is spectacular and the hosts are outstanding. I hope we can return!
We really enjoyed our stay here. It was one of the most unique places we've stayed. The cabin and surrounding property gave a very secluded and outdoor feeling while providing easy access to the amenities of the city. The hosts were very nice and accommodating the entire time.
Beautiful cabin in a great and quiet location but close to everything. Wonderful!

About the host
Hosted by Tammy Donelson
We love hosting people from all over the world in our Captain's Cabin Bed & Breakfast. We opened Captain's Annex in our home for Derby and special events. My husband, Jan, is a licensed architect specializing in log and timberframe homes and distributor for Hearthstone Homes. When we found this property featuring TWO log cabin homes, we had to live here. I, Tammy, am a marketing consultant for healthcare companies and home sharing hosts. I love to cook and spoil my guests with gourmet breakfasts and lots of goodies. We are history buffs, especially the Lewis & Clark period. The cabins are full of artifacts and historic replicas from Jan's 2004-2006 bicentennial trip to the Pacific Ocean in a keelboat to commemorate the Lewis & Clark journey of 1804-1806.
Why they chose this property
This property has a peace and tranquility that is hard to find. Wildlife abounds. The front porch provides a great view of the lake. The creek is just a few steps away where you can go wading of explore the waterfall.
What makes this property unique
Gourmet breakfast is served on weekends! Cherry Oatmeal Scones, Wild Mushroom Frittata, Scotch Eggs, Apple Cranberry Compote, French Toast Strata and Pumpkin Praline Waffles are just a few of our featured recipes. They can also be found in my new cookbook, Captain's Cabin Favorite Recipes.
