About the host
Hosted by Steve Kunkel
We’re a family with deep roots in the Pacific Northwest and a passion for building spaces that bring people together. In April 2019, we purchased an undeveloped lot in Copalis Beach with a dream: to create a beautiful vacation home designed specifically for guests like you.
Steve had already sketched floor plans and began designing the home right away. From the start, this wasn’t just a personal project—it was a labor of love meant to be shared. With the support of our daughters, Samantha and Farrah, and my sisters, Susan and Kim, we made this dream a reality. Construction began in September 2020, and after 11 months and 58 trips from Bellevue (where we live), the Copalis Beach House was complete in August 2021. My wife Alice and I even lived in a trailer on-site for 10 months during the build—it was a true family effort.
We love the ocean, fresh air, and the chance to unwind in peaceful, scenic places—and we hope our beach house offers the same experience to you. Whether you’re here to relax, reconnect, or explore the coast, we’re honored to host you in a home built with heart and purpose.
This isn’t our first time hosting. In 2009, we opened the Olympic Foothills Lodge near Port Angeles, WA—a peaceful retreat nestled in the woods, just minutes from Olympic National Park. Over the years, it’s brought joy to our family and countless travelers seeking comfort, nature, and a true Northwest experience. If you’re ever exploring the Peninsula, we’d love for you to check it out at OlympicFoothillsLodge.com.

Why they chose this property
My connection to this stretch of the Washington coast goes back to the 1950s, when my family would take trips to Copalis Beach and stay in little roadside cabins. That early sense of peace and simplicity stuck with me through the years.
In the '80s, when our daughters were young, we camped regularly at Cape Disappointment near Ilwaco, and I often returned to the coast in the winter months for quiet solo retreats. I stayed several times at Surf Crest, just south of Sea View Estates, where our home now sits. It always felt like a place to breathe deeply and reset.
In 2018, I rented a home here in Sea View Estates and found myself dreaming of a house design that would embrace the landscape without sacrificing comfort—something with ocean views that didn’t require climbing two flights of stairs just to enjoy them! On a walk down Ocean Lane, I spotted a lot for sale and was inspired to begin designing. That particular lot didn’t work out, but by 2019, we found the right one and were lucky enough to call it ours.
What I love most about this neighborhood is the quiet rhythm of life here. The sound of the surf beyond the dunes, the long walks under wide skies, and the sense of retreat from the busyness of everyday life—it all makes this place feel like home.
