Our stay (a family of 5), was perfectly relaxing. We had a great time enjoying the cool mountain weather, taking hikes, playing board games and puzzles, and enjoying the babbling creek. 5 out of 5 stars. Would definitely stay again.
This was our second summer in a row to stay at this beautiful property. The house is very comfortable, and we just love the location! It’s secluded but with easy access to the lake, trails, and other activities. The views from the deck are amazing, and we spent lots of time relaxing there. We hope to be back next year!

We've been coming to Vallecito Lake for almost 30 years, and this is my favorite place we've stayed! The location is beautiful with great views and plenty of room to explore on the property. The house is great and is in a secluded neighborhood away from neighbors. The creek on the property is a nice bonus. Our group of 6 was totally comfortable and enjoyed meals and games on the deck and at the large dining room table. We definitely hope to stay here again!

Ron,
So glad you all enjoyed the peace and quiet of our cabin, as well as your visits to Durango, which has so much to offer. Thanks for being our guests.

The cabin and outdoor space was amazing in general. We may return during better weather. We were there during unexpected heavy rain from the hurricane so stuck inside half the time. I didn’t notice there were no TVs or I would had brought one or laptops. It may had been fine if we had more outdoor time. If your family wants a TV then bring one and then a top rated place.
Just what we wanted - a mountain cabin away from the crowds and with a gorgeous view of the San Juans. Our only visitors were the chipmunks, mule deer, and the woodpeckers nesting above the deck. We totally enjoyed our stay and would love to come back! Such a respite from the heat that we experience in North Texas.

So happy that your stay at the cabin was just what you hoped for! We would love for you to come back again!
Thanks, Ruth and Chester
Our family of 6 thoroughly enjoyed our stay! The cabin was clean, spacious, had comfortable beds, and felt like we were the only ones on the mountain! We enjoyed our meals on the deck, and our kids loved walking around the property. The lake marina is just a couple miles away, so we rented a boat for the afternoon one day and had a blast! We also loved the hike at Vallecito Creek. Some intermediate climbs, but amazing views! This area is stunning, the hosts & cabin were perfect, and we would love to come back again!

Over the mountain and through the woods to paradise we go…
If you want to relax, unplug and unwind and or adventure In a mountain paradise that has streams and lakes nearby And incredible mountain and park trails in the San Juan Mountains and national forest, look no further. We rented a jeep and took a long beautiful ride in from Denver over two days and stayed at the property for five days. Aside from just enjoying the spectacular property and the surrounding mountains, lakes and parks; When we got ansi we drove to Durango, adventured at Purgatory, and climbed the Alpine Loop in our Jeep at Silverton. Only regret is Next time will book more time. Lewis Family

About the host
Hosted by Ruth
Ruth and Chester have been coming to Vallecito Lake for as long as they can remember. They spent their honeymoon up by the lake, in one of the first cabins ever built in this area. That little cabin was a treasured family vacation spot for Chester's family, and a place that Ruth & Chester brought their kids every summer. In the 2001 Missionary Ridge fire, that special place was lost. A few sad summers went by without Vallecito Lake for the family, and then serendipitously, they rescued a lost family, who in turn told them about this exact cabin. With grandchildren now in the mix, this Vallecito family tradition is alive and well!
Why they chose this property
This area of the Vallecito Valley is quiet, and close to Vallecito Creek Campground where there are amazing hiking trails back into the wilderness along the river. The lake is just down the road, as are the local stores and restaurants.
What makes this property unique
Although this family cabin has most of the comforts of home, it has the feel of times gone by. Once you arrive, you will not want to leave. It is half a mile up a dirt road from the main road, and across a small wood bridge that spans the creek that runs on the property. There are huge pine trees and plenty of aspens surrounding the large deck that overlooks the treetops of Vallecito Valley. Sitting on the deck with your morning coffee, watching the birds, deer, chipmunks, and other wildlife just puts the world in perspective. The night skies are amazing, and we often see shooting stars, as well as the Milky Way. Campfire time is the best with family or friends, and we have a big stone campfire pit, and plenty of chairs to pull around the fire. Marshmallow forks provided! Sleeping with the windows open at night is the best, you can hear the waterfall and the creek.
