Location was great for walking the beach to Pentwater and back. Cottage was very rustic, but comfortable. Hosts were very attentive and easy to work with. Nice place!

We are glad you enjoyed your stay and were comfortable at the cottage, Jeff -- thanks for being great renters and for the five stars!
With Lake Michigan in front and acres of forest behind, this is really a nice location. The cottage is situated in a small community and everyone we met was super friendly, and there is enough spacing between cottages that it has a secluded feel. Highly recommended.
Cute cottage nestled in a wooded lot. Short private walk to Lake Michigan. The beach is beautiful!
The cottage deck provides a great view of the lake. Communication with the owner was impeccable.
The cottage had everything we needed for a great vacation. Thank you!
A true gem on one of Michigan's most beautiful beaches
We spent the week with our two daughters and two labradors with an array of family members who spent a night here and there with us following the Memorial Day holiday. Michigan weather is a gamble in late May/early June but we spent 7 days in near 80 degrees, full sunshine and calm waters (a rarity). It was a spectacular week.
We walked into Pentwater on the beach, enjoyed the beach in front of the cottage and even swam. We really enjoyed reading about the history of the association this cottage is in (a book on the table) and the families that built these gems on this beautiful stretch of Lake Michigan's coastline.
Everything you could ever imagine needing for a great week at the beach is there for you from towels to toys. We took advantage of the ample beach chairs, beach umbrella, kids life jackets and beach toys. The cottage was spakling clean and as others have mentioned it is much more spacious than the pictures let on. There is a significant slope to the floor but to be expected for a classic cottage that has been built on a sand dune.
This cottage would pose a significant challenge for anyone with mobility challenges (if not be entirely impossible to access and enjoy) just a note there.
We didn’t find any of the rules overwhelming, check in and out was a breeze and all of the neighbors we encountered were lovely and welcoming. The sunsets are spectacular! This is a special place that you just have to experience for yourself. We would absolutely love to return
It is not usually the case that a property looks better in real life than it does in the photos, but this place far exceeded our expectations. It was absolutely perfect for our group and we very much enjoyed staying here. The photos posted on the listing do not do justice to the cottage. It looks much nicer and more spacious in person than it does in the photos. The cottage is old and the floor does slant quite a bit, but the house is clean, very spacious, equipped with everything we needed, and very comfortable. The layout was perfect for our group (which was 6 adults, 2 children, and 2 dogs), because the bedroom areas are in a separate space from the living area so the kids could get up early and not wake up the rest of the people sleeping in the house. The beach is closeby and beautiful. However, the house is on a big hill and there are lots of stairs and sand dunes to climb to get from the beach to the house and to get from the car to the house. I would not recommend this house for babies, older dogs or people with disabilities/mobility issues. The neighbors and other visitors on the lake are very friendly and there are beach chairs and toys for guests to use. The front porch is big and has a beautiful view of the sunset. We ate almost every meal outside together as a family and even enjoyed using the grill. My only complaint is that there are A LOT of rules for the house. The rules are posted on the Vrbo listing, the owner emails the rules ahead of time (and checks in by email once you arrive), there are rules posted in a few spots around the house, there is a book of rules at the house, and the neighbors even reminded us of the rules as soon as we arrived. It was a little overwhelming to feel bombarded by all the rules as soon as we got there. However, the rules are reasonable and not too difficult to comply with once you get your bearings. Overall, we had a really wonderful experience at this property and will definitely visit again in the future. We also loved reading about the history of the area (there is a great book in the living room) and hearing stories of the families that settled in the area from the neighbors. We will remember this trip for a very long time and hope to be back again soon.

Thank you for your thoughtful review, Eileen! We enjoyed hosting you and your group, and so glad you enjoyed your stay. We have had some negative experiences with renters who "make their own rules" -- who don't respect or care for our beloved family cottage, or the peace and privacy of our neighbors. So we are especially grateful for your attention to detail and efforts to help!
This cabin is nestled between the ravine and the dunes fronting the lake. It is very well maintained, has gorgeous views from the front deck and is located on a gorgeous stretch of coastline. We had a truly wonderful week and look forward to renting it again!

The view and sunsets were impressive and the beach was beautiful. We were blessed with a wonderful hot week of weather. The cottage itself was warm even though the fans were abundant. We were disappointed with the upkeep and mustiness as if it was closed up before our check in. Some of the cleanliness could have been improved on but we left it in great condition for the next party. Overall it was a great get away for our family.

Paul, we appreciate the feedback and apologize that the cottage did not meet your expectations. We will do more in the future to ensure the cottage has been sufficiently aired out after it has been closed up during the winter and spring months.

Great family getaway
We were pleasantly surprised with the Shannon Cottage. The cottage is much bigger then the pictures let on. Its surprisingly spacious and has something for everyone. The weather was pretty good during our stay (mid June), so the kids and the adults spent lots of time in the water. The beach is small but private and more than roomy enough for a family (or two). The water changes depending on the lake, but it was mostly shallow with a few sandbars not far out, so great for our kids. The TV room is great for relaxing and watching netflix on a rainy day. The cottage drive is also fantastic, it really gives you the feeling of getting away from the rat race - which is just what we were looking for! Hopefully we'll be going back next year.

Perfect Relaxing Beachfront Retreat
This was our first visit to this cottage and to Lake Michigan. Our family of four had a wonderful week long vacation here that, at least for my 9 year old daughter, beat out our trip to Disney World last year. She said that the only thing that would have made it better would have been to never go out! We did go check out Pentwater, though. We were a bit off season so some of the shops were closed, but we knew that ahead of time. We also went to Ludington to check out Big Sable Lighthouse.
Other than that we spent lots of time hanging out in this house. We read books, watched a few movies (they have cable and Netflix), enjoyed a couple fires in the fire pit, swam and jumped around in the waves and walked the beach. It was delightful.
The house was clean and comfortable. It had all the items we might need to cook and enjoy the beach. There were even lots of random household items like bandages, shampoo, tons of towels and I found a couple pins in the bathroom drawer that came in handy while we were there. It is decorated with pictures from the owners' families which gives it a lovely personal feel.
I experienced great communication with the owner by email. I had several questions during the planning process that were answered in a timely and pleasant manner.
We all agree we'd be happy to come back to stay here again!

Great Lakefront Beachhouse
My husband and I spent 4 days at this lovely beach-house in Pentwater with our 2 grown children and two grandchildren. Couldn't have asked for a more delightful stay. Patty, the owner, was most helpful and was always available if we had any questions. The house was exactly as listed ... spacious and exceptionally clean and well equipped for anything a person would need, right down to the beach towels, sand chairs and beach toys for the kids. There’s this wonderful room in the back of the house, stocked with cards, games and movies, that we made good use of. And the water view from the deck, was simply gorgeous. You can have your meals there, while enjoying a stunning sunset. You're just a few steps to the water, where you'll find a great beach with the purest white sand you can imagine. The grandkids spent most of the time splashing around in the water and building beautiful sand castles for all to admire and the adults had a great time fishing and kayaking along the shore. When we were able to pry everybody away from the beach, we drove into town to enjoy the lay-back ambiance of Pentwater. We loved it all, but I think our favorite was the ice cream shop right across the street from the community gathering spot. One evening, they had a very entertaining blue grass band playing, where the kids had so much fun dancing and clapping along to the beat of the music. I could go on and on ... suffice it to say, this is a very nice area that can be enjoyed over and over again. We'll definitely be back. Thanks Patty for a wonderful vacation.

Great weekend stay at classic Pentwater cottage - endless beach right outside your door
Two of us spent an enjoyable late summer weekend at this cottage. It's a traditional Pentwater cottage - an older wood house tucked back in the woods right on the dune overlooking Lake Michigan. The cottage is well equipped with cooking supplies, linens, beach towels, etc. so we didn't need to lug much from home. We spent most of our time out on the beach...just a few steps down the dune from the house. We loved having a cookout in the permanent fire ring the owners have set up on the dune. Can't beat that view for sunsets!
There is ample room for a number of guests, though 1.5 baths mean that there may be a bit of waiting for showers for many people. Some of the furnishings are older, but this is what we expected in this type of cottage. There is a very comfortable and cozy tv room in the back of the house - great for hiding away in bad weather or for kids to hang out and play games.
Overall, a great location being right on the beach and a few short minutes' drive into town. The owners are very helpful and responsive to any questions. We'll definitely recommend it to friends and family.

A cozy cottage get-away
This cottage has so much charm. It was clean and comfortable for our little grandchildren (all 8 of them!) and me and my husband. The little ones enjoyed having their own "private" space upstairs, with room to play and lots of beds. The den in the back of the cottage was perfect for games or a movie. I especially liked that it's close to the beach...a few stairs and you're there! The kitchen has everything needed and the provision of all linens and towels, including beach towels was convenient.
It was a wonderfully relaxing week. Thank you, Patty, for renting your special cottage to us.

Fabulous!
We had a WONDERFUL time at The Shannon Cottage! Our 3 year old son and black lab could not get enough of the water! The cottage was clean and had everything we needed for an enjoyable weekend. There was a very detailed "book" of information on the fridge when we got there. Patty - one of the owners was VERY easy to work with. At night you can open the windows and fall asleep to the sounds of the big water. Many times we were the only people on the beach. The water was warm and is shallow for quite a ways out and great for little people to play in. We loved eating breakfast out on the porch! We went to Mac Woods and went on a dune ride ... worth every penny, had great meals at The Brown Bear and The Antler Bar, and ate LOTS of ice cream at House of Flavors. We went in every shop in Pentwater and even made it to a civic band concert downtown. LOVED Cenzo's Market!! We were sad to leave and would go back in a HEARTBEAT!

About the host
Hosted by Patty
Our dad built this cottage in the early 50s, and we have been returning to our Pentwater home every summer since. Over the years, our dad added on to the cottage as the size of our family grew, transforming it from a tiny 2-bedroom square into a place to accommodate our family as it grew. . Ownership of our cottage is lovingly shared by three adult "Shannon kids" who inherited it in 2006, and now enjoy the beach with our own grandbabies -- the fourth generation to love the cottage!
