Just steps from the Kennebec River, this location allows you to enjoy a tranquil getaway while remaining close to any attractions you may desire: beaches, fishing, boating, shopping, and more.
The house is situated on four acres and surrounded by the woods of the Kennebec Land Trust. As you drive up the stone driveway to the top of the hill you pass by the front of the house and come around to the back entrance. A deck spans the entire back of the house and has a grill as well as a large outdoor table with umbrella and chairs. You can enjoy quiet mornings out on the deck in the summer sun or meals outdoors in the evenings. Entering the back door you pass a half bath and small back bedroom on your right to find a large open kitchen and dining room on your left. The kitchen is stocked with all the necessities if you want to cook at home and a large dining room table that seats 10. As you walk through the dining room you enter the family room. A comfy couch, Direct TV, and WiFi are available if weather or other circumstances keep you indoors for part of your stay. Off the family room is the Master Bedroom. With plenty of windows and a Queen size bed, the Master is bright and welcoming. French doors open out onto the back deck so you can step right outside. Heading downstairs the ground floor has three full bedrooms and a full bath which provide plenty of room for family or friends or both to stay. The full bath is stocked with towels and there’s a laundry room for your use at the bottom of the stairs. Each bedroom has a double bed and ample closet space. All the bedroom windows look out onto the front lawn which stretches down the hill to the road.
The local area offers every kind of activity you could hope for while visiting Maine. The Kennebec River is only 800 feet from the house, with fishing access at the end of Old Ferry Road. Farther down Fiddler’s Reach Road is the public boat access where you can enter the river for a day of boating. You can travel North to Bath or South towards Popham Beach and Boothbay Harbor. If you want to spend a day at the beach you can drive down Route 209 to Popham Beach State Park and walk out on the expansive sand flats at low tide. Visit the Fort Popham Site nearby if you’re interested in a bit of history or grab something to eat a Spinney’s, a long-time local spot right on the beach. If you’re interested in shopping or lunch or dinner out, Boothbay, Georgetown, and Brunswick are all nearby. Even Freeport isn’t too far if you want to visit L. L. Bean, a Maine institution.

We had an amazing family reunion staying here! Darren was incredibly responsive and accommodating as were the cleaners letting us in early to drop food and dogs off. The property is lovely with a retreat feel. Very quiet and serene. So much space with 5 bedrooms and fabulous community space. The outdoor wrap around deck and gas grill were a huge bonus! Thank you Darren for everything!
This is a great house for a large group of people. Great location with plenty to do in the area. The host was communicative and made sure we had everything we needed.
Lots of room in this house to enjoy a vacation with family! The location was great - just a short ride into Bath, to several amazing beaches, not far from Freeport, Portland, Boothbay...

Thanks for staying with us Kim. We are glad you enjoyed your stay !
My family thoroughly enjoyed our stay! Perfect location, amazing property, comfortable beds and a nice-sized kitchen with plenty of dishes, pots & pans. Enjoying my coffee out on the deck each morning with the birds and chipmunks was the best! Hope to visit again!

We had a wonderful stay. The house was close to everything. We especially enjoyed Popham Beach with our dog. We parked at the fort for free and spent the day along the long dog friendly beach.
The house has a lot of great space and is such an easy drive to Popham, Head beach and Bath or Brunswick. The manager is very kind and helpful. We can't wait to return to this house!
House was perfect for our group of Kayakers. Nice eating for morning and evening meals and trip planning. Comfortable beds, good location for us.
Hope to return next year.

It's a nice place to spend time with family or friends, very private and quiet area, love the green views from all around the house.
We had everything we need to cook our meals.
I really recommend this house to stay in.
The house was in a great location with close proximity to nearby beaches, as well as Bath, Freeport, and Portland. There was plenty of space to stretch out throughout the large house, and we loved seeing the resident groundhog each morning! The nearby Winnegance restaurant was great for breakfast and lunch.
The stay was great. House smells kind of musty but was otherwise nice. Master bedroom doesn’t have a door, just a curtain. The location is great. The host was attentive.
A comfy home for a larger group. Facilities were nice, renter note, the only shower/bathtub on lower level. Rental close to Bath Maine and Popham Beach, so short trips were easy throughout the day. Easy grocery shopping about 10 minutes away as well. Property manager called before the stay and communicated about residence in detail, which was greatly appreciated.
This was the perfect place for a last minute gathering with my family. The place is very big and feels homey. Darren was extremely nice and attentive to any questions I had about the property. Only thing to note is the photos of the rooms are a little outdated so there isn't a room that has two beds in it like the photos show. Other than that, everything is as described!

Thank you Vanessa, I will update the photos today. We are glad you had a great time during your stay !
Large home with plenty of room if you have large family
Good stay. Had 1 issue and Darren resolved it quickly. My only suggestion is to get mattress toppers for beds(if you like firm/hard beds you will be ok), make fans available for cooling and review kitchen items. We were missing some very essential things for cooking. Private location, huge property, water access, fire pit and great for entertaining. A good blend of rustic Maine charm with amenities. We would stay again.

Thanks Amy for the awesome review. One thing I could say is that there is a fan in every room and I will take a look at the kitchen inventory.
Thanks again.

Communication and checking in/out with Darren was a breeze. He was so nice and helpful and was willing to give recommendations which were perfect for our stay. We booked to celebrate a graduation and birthdays and the house and property were perfect! Plenty of room and space, and everyone loved the house. It rained most of our weekend but we didnt really notice as we had lots of fun hanging out and spending time around the big dining table and playing games. Loved the fact that we were able to cook meals as well as the kitchen had everything we needed. Best part was we brought our 4 legged family member and when we checked in we found a giant dog bed and toys out for her. It made us feel welcome and at home. Definitely planning on booking again in the future! Thanks again for the wonderful stay!!
The house is located in a quiet place in woods. We like it. You can walk to the river. Only 11 miles to Popham beach and 11 miles to Wal-Mart for shopping. This is convenient.
I did not see and mice or ants in the house how other reviews say. Over all this is a good place to stay, but it may need some renovation here and there. Also this is not the cleanest house I stayed, but is not too bad. The owner may work with his cleaning crews on this issue to make the house great. Speaking about the owner, he seems to be a nice guy. Always answered my messages in time and took care of our needs, such as replacing a grill which was damaged by previous tenants and other things.

VERY SAD!
To sum up our trip for ten days, perfect! The house rental from Darren was a disappointment. The house was dirty. There was dog hair on furniture, the carpet was torn in a bedroom which he claimed was from earlier renters, the downstairs bathroom had mold in it which everyone ended up sick. We had ants and a mouse. We left Darren's home in tip top condition. He replied to my text "It was left awesome." Per our phone conversation in August he said the refund deposit check was in the mail? As of today November 29, 2015, No Check. Per several text and phone calls he claimed the check has been cashed. We have asked for more info and he decided not to respond. We did have a great time in Maine, which was a place our Mother wanted to go! Our Mother passed away a week later. Very Sad times for us. So for the people that are interested in renting this place, go for it! Just be forewarned!

Unfortunately, this review isn’t accurate and I'm disappointed that someone chose to write these things about my house. I hope it won't deter other potential guests from enjoying my place in Maine.
I've been renting out my home in Maine for five years now. I've had weekend renters, long-term renters who stay for months at a time, and everything in between. I've never had a complaint and no one has ever left disappointed.
I clean in preparation for the arrival of all my guests and I did the same this time. There’s no mold in my home and no one has ever been sick after renting from me. I do live out in the woods, so they could have seen a field mouse or a few ants but I’ve never had a problem with mice or ants in the house. No other renters have ever mentioned having this problem either. These ladies had their security deposit returned and I apologized to them for the confusion and the delay. The delay was caused by the unfortunate death of the girls’ mother who was the lessee on the contract. Once I understood what happened and it was resolved who and where I needed to send the check to, it was sent.
I’m sincerely sorry if she didn’t enjoy her time at my house because I want all my guests to enjoy my home and Maine as much as I do.
Thank you for taking the time to read this and I hope I’ll have the chance to show you the place myself!
Darren

Liked: Listing accuracy
Disliked: Cleanliness, communication
Disappointing Stay: Water Issues, Mice, Poor Communication & Lack of Accountability
I rarely leave negative reviews, but I feel it’s important to share our experience. Our weekend was impacted by several serious issues. First, we had no running water for 12 hours due to a well pump failure. The host kept asking us to wait instead of immediately sending help.More concerning was the mouse activity —we saw a mouse in the kitchen, and there were droppings on the counters and in the cabinets near the cookware. We didn’t feel comfortable using the kitchen.Several of my friends who slept in the basement also developed allergy-like symptoms that cleared up after we left, suggesting something in that space may not be clean or well-ventilated. It smells musty/moldy. After the trip, I contacted the host with a polite request for a partial refund. Despite multiple follow-ups — including contact from VRBO support — the host never clearly communicated a decision and was unresponsive. When I spoke with VRBO, I was told I likely would’ve been eligible for a full refund if I had reported the issues during the stay. But in all honesty, I was simply trying to make the best of the weekend with close friends I rarely see, who had gathered for a wedding. I didn’t want to spend the trip chasing a resolution — I just wanted to enjoy our time together. It’s unfortunate that our experience wasn’t met with accountability or even basic communication afterward. I wouldn’t book here again, and I hope this review helps others make an informed decision.
Inviting and charming home. Great place to stay with extended family. Lots of room to gather and everyone had their own space to sleep. Love the area. Beautiful part of Maine!
the house was a perfect place for our out of town family /friends to gather for a wedding in Bath. We had everything we needed and the host was very accommodating in helping when we had any questions. The grounds were large and the parking plenty.
Darren is an excellent host. The location can't be beat and there is a lot of room to spread out

About the host
Hosted by Darren Goodwin
My name is Darren and I’ve been vacationing in the Phippsburg area my whole life. I have a background in construction and I have carefully, gracefully remodeled this home to be a place suitable for large family gatherings. I live in Boston and usually come up to the house only on the weekends. It has been a privilege for me to own this home and has brought me great joy and many memorable experiences, both at the house and out on the water.
Why they chose this property
I didn't purchase this home with the intention of renting it out, but I ended up doing so in order to allow people to experience the same joy I've had here. It just so happens that after I completed the remodel, it became clear to me that there was a need for a property as unique as this on the vacation rental market. By offering up my home for rent in this beautiful area, I feel I'm able to contribute to bringing wonderful experiences into other people's lives. One of our guests called this home, “the greatest place on earth'. That being said, the main reason I rent out this property is to allow you to experience just a short visit to paradise and create great memories.
What makes this property unique
This rental offers the perfect mix of a tranquil setting away from it all with closeness to everything so you’re not spending the day driving around if you want to get out. We enjoy proximity to the river, beaches, shopping and dining, and the highway. That includes great dining, antiquing, a boat launch, golf, state parks and beaches, historic sites, and more. It’s the perfect location for any renter since you have any activity you desire at your fingertips while still being able to get away from it all and just enjoy the peach and quiet at home.
