About this property

Gilbert Cottage - wooded privacy in Southwest Harbor

A unique 2 BR 1 BA cottage in the woods near Long Pond and Southwest Harbor.

This classic Maine cottage, nestled in the spruce woods above Southwest Harbor, combines charm and comfort in ideal proportions. Indoors it boasts bright, pine-paneled rooms, a fully-equipped kitchen and cathedral ceiling in the great living/dining area. A wood fireplace in the living room will warm you on cool island evenings.

The 1.4ac grounds include a terraced deck, a small lawn for ball games or star-gazing and a plot of beautiful old spruce & cedar woods. A vernal pool in the forest adds a sparkle of water to the landscape in spring & fall, but come in late July or early August if you want to pick your own high-bush blueberries right behind the house!

Acadia National Park and the trails around Long Pond, Beech Mountain & Western Mountain are only a short walk down the road. In the opposite direction, a 5-min drive (or a 20-min walk) will bring you to the shops & restaurants of Southwest Harbor. There you can rent bicycles, kayaks or take the free Island Explorer shuttle buses to all parts of the island.

Cute house and great location. A few minor issues with the range (have to manually light and hard to control heat) and the TV system (remote was intermittent) but nothing major.

September vacation

Overall a great place, liked the rustic decor. We enjoyed the park and hiking. The location was perfect. Our only complaint was the cottage was very dark, more lights would have been nice.

I would describe the Gilbert Cottage as more of a camp or cabin than a cottage. While *cottage* suggests a cozy, thoughtfully appointed place to stay, this property felt entirely functional, with little aesthetic appeal or character. To be fair, I had seen the interior photos before booking and knew accommodations on Mount Desert Island are expensive. However, it was the accumulation of small disappointments that made the overall value feel lacking. The cottage was reasonably clean, and Mary, who prepared it, was wonderful—kind, accommodating, and conscientious. The issues were with the furnishings and maintenance. The bedding was old and uncomfortable, the furniture had inexpensive slipcovers, the curtains looked like the cheapest available, and the drip coffee maker looked like something from a discount store 25 years ago. The toilet seat, which had been held together with electrical tape, fell apart during our stay. The listing also includes photos of Acadia National Park labeled as the property's grounds. I'm familiar with the area, so I knew they weren't, but they should be labeled as nearby attractions instead. The wooded lot is peaceful and close to downtown Southwest Harbor, and we enjoyed coffee on the porch each morning. Overall, it worked as a place to sleep while exploring Acadia, but for the price, we expected more.

Amazing cabin in the woods close to Acadia

This beautiful old cottage was the perfect jumping off place for a week of exploring Acadia. We could be at a majestic pond in less than a mile, running on gravel roads in less than a half mile, and walking through Southwest Harbor within a 3-minute drive. Being on the “Quietside” was ideal, and so was the rustic feel of the lodge. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a quiet place in the woods, close to the heart of the park but far from the congestion of Bar Harbor.
