About the host
Hosted by Alina & Bubba Grubb
We (Alina & Bubba) are the former owners and 5-Star Super Hosts of a property in Sapphire Valley. We loved western North Carolina and the Highlands Plateau but we wanted to spread out on land closer to the mountains, which brought us to the super quaint town of Bryson City, N.C. where we now run the Little Gem Cottage properties. We loved the town so much and have settled on four acres at the border of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. We love it! Our four acres have two properties, a cottage farmhouse and a smaller cabin with an adorable front porch.
And we are hands-on hosts. You will always communicate directly with us, and not some management company. We open our home because we love sharing our dream come true with others who want the same experiences.
Why they chose this property
The Little Gem sits on four lush, forested acres and offers two separate homes for rent. The location is quiet, sits at the border of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park -- and there isn't a neighbor in sight. The entrance to several of the park's trails are yards away from our home -- no car is required to get there. Yet, our location is 5 minutes from downtown Bryson City and all the great restaurants and activities the town offers. In other words, you can lose yourself in a cloud of fireflies, take long quiet walks in the national park, and gaze up at starts at night -- or -- you can ride the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad, plan an evening out at a great restaurant, go shopping in adorable stores in town, take a day trip or see a local theatrical play. We offer quiet or activity, you choose your vibe.
Guests can venture out to local Farmer's Markets and restaurants, enjoy an ice cream cone at a decades-old soda fountain, or roast s'mores around our own, private fire ring. You can sit on our front porch and watch deer stroll by, or, if you're up for it, you can feed our special friend Gert the Groundhog, who hangs out at the property regularly (we keep feed just off the front porch for Gert, by the way).
What makes this property unique
Bryson City is known as "The Gateway to the Smokies." We frequented the area becasue of its access to well-known Smoky Mountain attractions, such as Cherokee, whitewater rafting on the Tuckasegee and Nantahala rivers, tubing down Deep Creek, and the bucket-list experience of riding the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad, especially the "Polar Express" at Christmas.
But we love to fly fish, and there are so many more areas available for trophy catches in and around Bryson City. This includes the rivers and streams of the Cherokee Nation, or Qualla Boundary, where the elusive Donaldson and Palomino strains of rainbow trout hide in the Raven Fork fishing area of the reservation. Rainbows, Brooks and Browns can always be found in all of the area's streams and rivers.
The property that we call home is located, literally, 150 yards from the Tom Branch entrance to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Another mile down the road and you've arrived at the Deep Creek Recreation Area; a launching point for day hikers, back-country campers, as well as fly-fishing and tubing adventures.
