About this property
Off-season on Nantucket? Create magical memories!
Enjoy our great family vacation home - The ''PoorHouse''. For over 50 years the Poor family has enjoyed regular visits and family reunions on Nantucket. Message us for our special insider hints on how best to enjoy Nantucket, just as if you, too, have been coming for decades.
Our historic house is in a very quiet neighborhood in town, but just a short 10 minute walk to the bottom of Main Street and all the activity ''downtown'', and an easy bike ride on dedicated paths to beaches. There are four bedrooms and three baths, for up to eight guests. There is a large fenced-in yard - great for children and well behaved dogs, and conservation land right across the street. You'll find everything you need for a wonderful visit - linens, beach towels, washer/dryer, gas grill, cable, and super high speed wi-fi. The recently renovated kitchen is large and comfortably well-appointed. The house is heated for your comfort in chilly weather, with fireplaces downstairs for a warm welcome on a cold day, and equipped with window air conditioning in the summer season.
The PoorHouse is perfect for a long weekend or week or more to create perfect memories. If you are visiting Nantucket for one of the many festivals that take place during the shoulder season (including the Daffodil Weekend, the Film, Dance, Book, Wine and Fall Festivals, and Christmas Stroll), or are part of a wedding celebration or reunion, our house is a perfect base of operations. You will have easy access to all the activity, and yet be able to retreat to your quiet home for a much needed break.
With advanced notice, we can help you with special arrangements for airport and boat pick-up, golfing, sailing, tennis, a clambake, a fishing trip, catering for a special event...or almost anything you could imagine doing on Nantucket.
Note: Initial 25% deposit is non-refundable. 75% balance is due 30 days before first day of rental period. VRBO will hold $750 security deposit in escrow account. Security deposit is returned to renter within 14 days after lease period ends, provided house is in same condition existing upon renter's arrival.

About the host
Hosted by David Poor
The PoorHouse is a classic historic Nantucket house, built in 1804. Our family is only the fourth owner of the property! We love sharing our inside knowledge so that you can experience Nantucket as if you have been coming to the island for generations.
The house is simply furnished, but updated and very comfortable with a large, well equipped country kitchen (redone for 2021), luxury bedding, towel warmers and robes in every room, window unit A/C for the summer (whisper quiet MIdea and Windmill units - both NYTimes Wirecutter top picks), gas fireplaces for the off-season, a best in class LG - 48" OLED Smart webOS TV for gamers or binge watching, super fast WiFi, ping pong, foosball, and all the yard and board games you could want. We offer a wonderful in town location, only a 10 minute walk to the base of Main Street, but in a very quiet neighborhood with lots of yard space and light, and a deck and patio with teak furniture for lounging and meals. Across the street is a large conservation parcel, so you feel like you are in the country! Be sure to visit the spectacular Garden of the Sea and the plaque commemorating the neighborhood role in the abolitionist movement.
The PoorHouse has 4 bedrooms and three full bathrooms, plenty of room and private space for 3-4 couples, or a gathering of family or friends. You'll have a great base for a weekend, or a longer vacation.
We offer a range of additional services to enhance your stay at the PoorHouse: car pick up from the boat or airport; housekeeping; provisioning/catering; restaurant recommendations and reservations; and anything else to create the perfect vacation.

Why they chose this property
On Nantucket there is often a tradeoff between convenience and solitude and open space. What we love about 17 Mill Street is that it offers an in town location - only a 10 minute stroll to the bottom of Main Street - while at the same time we have a large back yard and are surrounded by open space and light....and a quiet neighborhood. There is a large conservation parcel and the beautiful "Garden of the Sea" featuring native plantings just across the street.
What makes this property unique
Often families face a challenge coordinating schedules while on vacation. Our house offers a great base of operations, and yet everyone can come and go easily at their own pace. Everything is within walking or biking distance. And yet you are in one of the quietest neighborhoods in town.
