About the host
Hosted by Lizz Frost Yocum
After 20+ years of international living and work, Lizz and Tom Yocum, along with Daisy, their dog, moved back to where they first met: Canaan Valley. They opened 77 in Canaan to share this beautiful part of the world with friends, family and kindred spirits.
Tom is a writer-editor and publisher of the Tucker County Observer, the independent community newspaper for the Potomac Highlands. He is also a cross-country ski instructor and a landscaper par excellence. Skiing in the valley since the 1980s, Tom served as a paramedic on both the Canaan Valley and National Ski Patrol and was the first PSIA telemark/alpine instructor in West Virginia. His knowledge of the area is extensive. Ask him about trails, local history, or his latest fascinations: moss and worms.
Lizz is the owner of the Canaan Valley Flower Company, which is dedicated to bringing the beauty of flowers and the benefits of gardens to people of all ages and abilities. After a career in international public health and behavior change communications, she earned a certificate in horticultural therapy and began flower farming. Mountain-grown flowers and cut herbs are available locally, and you may see her gathering wildflowers for bouquets along the roadside during your stay.
Daisy is a Tibetan Terrier mix from Dakar, Senegal. After eight months of COVID lockdown, she traded the beach for the mountains and joined Lizz and Tom on their journey to West Virginia. She has since grown a winter coat and become an awesome trail buddy.
Why they chose this property
Canaan Valley, Tucker County, and the surrounding West Virginia mountains, valleys, rivers, and towns offer so much to see and do.
77 in Canaan is in a great location. Without even leaving the house, guests can enjoy stunning panoramic views of Canaan Valley, Dolly Sods, Timberline Mountain, the Canaan Valley Wildlife Refuge, Canaan Valley Ski Area, and beyond.
State parks, trails, golf, ski areas, and the towns of Davis and Thomas are all within a ten- to fifteen-minute drive. The Canaan Valley Wildlife Refuge is even closer. A half hour of winding mountain roads can take guests to the banks of the Cheat River, the Monongahela National Forest, and countless remote, rugged beauty spots.
Music lovers can easily get to the summertime Mountainside Music Series, Pickin’ in Parsons, and the Purple Fiddle — or stay put to play or listen from the deck or moon garden.
There are maps, brochures, guidebooks, magazines, and other information throughout 77 in Canaan for guests to browse and use during their stay.
What makes this property unique
Drawing on their own extensive global travel experiences, Lizz and Tom aim to make guests feel welcome, relaxed, comfortable and eager to explore the area from the moment they arrive.
Lizz and Tom know what it is like to be somewhere new or to come back to somewhere familiar, ready for a break, a recharge, maybe even an adventure, and still need some creature comforts. With this in mind, they have set up and stocked 77 in Canaan so that guests can settle in, kick back, rest well and get on with their fun. The kitchen is ready for real cooking, the spaces are clearly organized, and the house is stocked with the practical things, from clear instructions to small conveniences, that guests appreciate having on hand.
Year-round, the wifi is 150+ Mbps for digital nomads and those who just need to briefly check-in, while the BBQ area, picnic table, front deck and fire pit are places to relax and enjoy the outdoors.
All over the world, Lizz and Tom have enjoyed working with local artists and celebrating the nature, beauty and culture around them. Inside, 77 in Canaan is no exception. The hand forged railing, photos, prints, and textiles in the house have all been commissioned or selected to celebrate local beauty and talent.
Across the seasons, the property reveals the special pleasures and distinct beauty of Canaan Valley.
In winter, morning coffee comes with a sunrise view of the slopes. After a day on the mountain (or a cozy afternoon binge-watching), guests return to apres-ski watching night skies from the deck, warm up by the fireplace, or gather around the fire pit under the stars.
In summer, the property is in full bloom with nature friendly flowers. Hummingbirds live in trees by the house. Birds and butterflies can be seen feeding on wildflowers, in the flower beds and the moon garden.
Leaf-peepers are spoiled for choice in the autumn.
And, finally, the night sky - the moon, Milky Way, satellites and galaxies – is truly spectacular!
